The Dark Knight Rises Bane

People seem to be automatically jumping to the conclusion that Bane's mask will be redesigned for the film, but I would like to ask the question 'why should/would it be?' There's really nothing in his original mask that doesn't fit Nolan's realistic universe, since his mask in the comics is, essentially, just a simple lucha libre mask, and there's really nothing that outrageous or unreleastic about it.

It's a matter of class, I think.

I was thinking about the possibility of Bane before and I remember saying that if he was in the movie, I'd want him to sound the absolute opposite of what you would expect.

I think Bane should sound like the Dean Martin of the Batman world. A suave, intelligent, charming individual. He's the best and he knows it. I think his whole manner should reflect style. So even if he does break Batman's back, you can't help but admire him. His sheer audacity and force of will puts him more in the 'morally dubious' category rather than being a plain cut villain.

The guy who voiced him in TAS did an outstanding job. You couldn't help but like the character even though he was an utter ****.

heres a quick manip of the above pic:

That helmet looks awesome!

no reason to mess around with banes mask much. the style, design, and colors all look fantastic.

Lucha Libre masks look silly?

So, on some level, does a guy with white face makeup, a purple suit, and green hair, or a guy with a burlap sack on his head, or a guy wearing body armor and a helmet that has bat-ears sticking out of the top; Nolan has found ways to make those things look less silly by making them functionally realistic, and there's absolutely no reason why he couldn't do the same with a lucha libre mask, especially since, in the case of the latter, it's already grounded in the real world (lucha libre masks, especially simplistic ones like Bane wears - already exist and have a cultural reason regarding their usage).

And silly.

At least to someone who has not come across a lot of Bane literature, like me, the mask looks plain silly.
Don't get me wrong, I like Bane a lot, Love It!

But wrestling has always been silly to me and a mask like that looks kinda ridiculous.
Mostly because here in Europe, the only thing I've seen masks like that in aren't meant to be serious.
But I am convinced that if Nolan does a comic faithful mask it will look good so I'll just shut up.

I like that a lot. Picture a big muscular masked guy in a suit (Nolan has a thing for them after all).

This.

I mean, the only reason Bane even won the first time is because he set up an elaborate plan to make batman exhausted. And used venom. In the comics, Bruce has shown that without venom and without elaborate traps, Bane just cant beat him.

So he's like almost every other villain, then?

Villains don't beat Batman. They come close. Some have "emotional" victories, like Joker. But I don't think that's a very fair measuring stick. Bane accomplished what was the closest to a definitive defeat (physical, mental and emotional) in Batman's history, no matter what his tactics were.

Bane's mask only looks like a luchadore mask because it's often depicted as having similar physical properties. You could rework the materials used in live action and make it closer to a helmet, and all luchadore comparisons will disapear.

Even as is, the mask is merely slightly evocative of a luchadore mask. The connection is made closer because of his Hispanic heritage. But the only time (in my knowledge) that it was literally a luchadore mask was in the animated series - and yes, that looked really stupid.

I think if Nolan does anything it will be more badass than a mere colorful mask. I hope he does something like that helmet that was posted above! ^

I just realized why I've been hating those masks.
It's the stupid open mouth part!

so its an entirely silly idea.....unless nolan does it that way, at which point its acceptable?

A luchador mask isn't silly. Bane is a jack-of-all-trades. He travelled the world and studied all sorts of crazy stuff. The fact that he has a pro wrestling mask adds a little bit to his mystique and makes him seem like more of a 'wanderer'. A guy from nowhere who just barges into Batman's life.

His comic mask looks a million times better than a lot of alternatives that have been posted here, and I don't mean that to be an insult. It's just that I strongly connect Bane to the Luchador mask, it's his thing. I think his whole costume should have little trinkets from various jobs or parts of the world. Kind of like how Boba Fett's costume was a mish-mash.

Bane should definently have a few trophies, his mask could just be one of those trophies. I guess it doesn't hurt that I'm a massive fan of pro wrestling ;)

I agree. I think they should barely touch his suit as opposed to turning him into a SWAT guy with an elaborate helmet that everyone's been suggesting. We already have a SWAT guy in the movie, having a second would make the already hard to see fight scenes even harder.

I'm still baffled by this. Begins only had a couple of those, with plenty that you could see just fine in, and in TDK you could see almost everything all the time, almost to the point that it made Batman's mystique seem broken. So what are you on about?

Further, wearing SWAT-esque clothes does not automatically make anything in the fights harder to see. That's a result of camera work and lighting, not costumes.

^^^

i was thinking the same thing. i don't know much about bane as i have not read the comics, but from what i have seen he is supposed to be much more taller and bigger/muscular than batman (when on venom). seeing as Hardy is only 5'9'', it makes me curious as to how they will accomplish this in the film.

time for nolan to put on his Prestige hat and make some movie magic! Baha!

I can't wait to see how Nolan interprets Bane!

I agree. Nolan has given us some really interesting takes on Batman and his surrounding world in the last two films. Seeing what he could do with Bane could be really good. Though I like Bane's look in the comics and it is fairly simple, I'm not sure it would be such a straightforward translation to Nolan's style. So I expect possibly a bit of a departure from the comics, but still being recongisable as Bane. Much like how Joker was handled.

TDK definitely showcased the fight scenes better in terms of seeing Batman fight. Which was in part due to the more flexible bat suit. Though my opinion on why it might have broken his mystique a bit is because of the silly ready stance of the particular martial art they chose. It is quite jarring visually to see him kicking ass one second and then looking like a bit daft the next.

I had a dream last night and i think it was Jesus trying to give me a message on what role Bane will play in TDKR. In the dream, Bane was the head of Gotham's underground. He's super smart, strategic, and strong. He deals a drug called Venom throughout the city which is causing an epidemic in Gotham. Venom was secretly developed by Dr. Hugo Strange and is working with Bane. I guess we'll find out in 1 year, 7 months exactly! :yay:

And what part of that made you think it was Jesus' doing, exactly?

This doesn't really seem important, since none of Batman's rogues can beat him.

Yeah, his voice in BTAS was great. I was always disappointed that they didn't do more with him. It's unfortunate, because he was done so well for most of the episode--until the end, when he went down like a chump.

Also, this is an idea I had for the mask, though a more faithful approach would work fine as well:
