Do probationary bans only last a day? I ask because I had thought Kevin Smith got one yesterday (I could be wrong though), but he's back now.

I believe they last anywhere from a day to several weeks, possibly months depending on the severity.

Frankly, I find it annoying. He gets a probationary ban for about four hours, then returns to continue exactly the same offending behaviour, while blaming everyone else for turning his vile rant into a "political discussion".
