'Batgirl' movie?

Why does a female director have to get a female character?

It doesn't have to. But it's awesome none the less. More opportunity for a female director. A woman doesn't grow up with the same experiences as a man. So she will bring her own perspective. Which then washes over her direction. Bringing a fresh creative eye into the proceedings.

See: Jenkins.

Keep Whedon away from anything batman related from now on please :o

He didn't have a story? That is some bs if I've ever smelt it! I can't for 1 second believe that Joss didn't have a story when he came to DC wanting to do Batgirl. Sounds more like they probably couldn't agree.

The Buffy fan in me is sad but the other part of me isn't. Hopefully the project still goes through and becomes a success. Though just another case of WB speaking before thinking.

I think it’s for the best anyway as Batgirl can have a female director now!

Yeah, his reason smells like BS, and I was actually looking forward to his take on Batgirl as I thought he was a good fit, but whatever. Given the current state of things (both on the DCEU side AND his side), it's probably for the best.

I hope they bring on a female director but the cynical part of me says this project is dead now and Whedon's interest was the only reason it was happening in the first place. Hope I'm wrong.

But on the surface that's what it looks like, only female characters for female directors, and that's what people are calling for. It's bull **** creatively because you're ultimately limiting the type of people who can create films with these character, or worse telling a specific group of directors that these are the only characters you're allowed to play with. Not that it matters, this film more than likely won't see the light of day, if it ever really was going to in the first place.

Didn’t he come out and say that he wasn’t approached for a specific character and chose to do Batgirl?

Just look at it as an opportunity to bring more attention to female directors in general. They aren’t getting a lot of high profile gigs - period. And if the path to equality means a little bit of pandering, so be it.

Yes. Which is why I said that. I don't think this project happens without him, unfortunately.

I don't like the idea of pandering, and I'm not sure how many women actually like the idea of it either.

I said a little bit of pandering. To me, that means being a little on the nose when it comes to seeking out talent for projects like this. There are a plethora of male directors who could make an excellent Batgirl movie - but if equality is important (and it is), why not go after a woman?

Is it pandering? Sure. In an ideal world, would the studio simply choose the best person for the job, regardless of gender? Sure. But we don’t live in that world, and if we’re ever gonna get there, we need to be willing to take the steps - even if the first few are a little awkward.

I'd be surprised if we see this movie anytime soon now. Also, him not having a story doesn't look good on WB. Shouldn't there have at least been a pitch with an idea of a story?

Yeah, it makes it look like WB is simply running their DC Universe on story ideas with no actual script or writers with a concrete outline.

Is this how all movies are made now? I was under the impression that scripts get sent and therefore reject on a daily basis in Hollywood. Is that no longer the case?

And I think it the long run pandering sends the wrong message.

I don’t necessarily disagree, but we have to do what we can with what we have and hopefully grow from there. And frankly, women could use more of a voice in the genre.

She doesn't, but we're a long way away from a female director being given a male character. So let's begin with female characters.

What wrong message?

That the heroes in these films have to be helmed by people of the same gender as said hero. That women can't helm a male character and vice versa. That is the wrong message to be sending to people. These character need the best directors regardless of who they are or where they are from.

I don’t necessarily disagree, but we have to do what we can with what we have and hopefully grow from there. And frankly, women could use more of a voice in the genre.

And that can be done without pigeonholing them or male directors into character gender camps.

Hopefully Gotham Sirens is side tracked, they really need to focus outside of Gotham.

She has comics so it really isn't a good excuse. CBM have source material you can takes bits and piece from or straight up adapt. Not like the character has ever been in a movie or many animated shows.

Basically if we had more chicks directing major blockbuster franchise **** it wouldn't even be an issue.

I think with Hamada on board (and that new VP that was hired last week), he is slowly but surely taking the reigns of the DCU and cleaning house. Snyder is gone, now Whedon, and hopefully every executive who had a hand in messing up the movies from BvS SS and JL. Hopefully Hamada takes his knowledge and experience from working with Wan in the Conjuring universe and applies it to the DCU.
JUST FOCUS IN STAND-ALONE MOVIE UNIVERSES (with very little hints of a wider universe in them) and rebuild the DCU slowly this time! And also it would not hurt my feelings if they go ahead and recast Ezra for the Flash, I just want a more comic accurate Flash (I’m fine with Grant on TV) but Flash is not a Peter Parker clone. He is a fully competent MAN, just a little irresponsible I.e. always late. Think Gosling or there abouts. I like Fisher for Cyborg but if he gets a movie it should be with the Titans.
Anyway starting with Aquaman, make it like WW it’s own movie with very light connective tissue. And then Shazam-same thing with his own movie universe. Then WW2 and after that Reeves Batman. And a MOS2 under new a director who has a great take on Supes and HIS movie universe. Hopefully by this time every movie will have a post scene leading to Injustice League. Let that movie end with a GL tease and then we are on our way with the new DCU.
Then after Reeves Bats we build to Nightwing and/or Batgirl spinoffs. It’s a shame WB wasted the last 5 Year’s before someone somewhere said “Hey this ain’t working quite the way we thought. We got greedy and jumped the gun with BvS to get that Marvel $$$.” Let’s hire the producer from our money making shares universe right under our noses and let him be the go to guy that runs the DC movies.
And if Wan knocks Aquaman out of the park and then Jenkins does the same with WW2 and then Sanberg’s Shazam is a winner; WB should get that Annihilation director Swamp Thing and then really get Del Toro back for Justice League: Dark Universe ????
