Why does a female director have to get a female character?
Easy marketing move.

It doesn't have to. But it's awesome none the less. More opportunity for a female director. A woman doesn't grow up with the same experiences as a man. So she will bring her own perspective. Which then washes over her direction. Bringing a fresh creative eye into the proceedings.
See: Jenkins.
Yeah, his reason smells like BS, and I was actually looking forward to his take on Batgirl as I thought he was a good fit, but whatever. Given the current state of things (both on the DCEU side AND his side), it's probably for the best.
I hope they bring on a female director but the cynical part of me says this project is dead now and Whedon's interest was the only reason it was happening in the first place. Hope I'm wrong.
But on the surface that's what it looks like, only female characters for female directors, and that's what people are calling for. It's bull **** creatively because you're ultimately limiting the type of people who can create films with these character, or worse telling a specific group of directors that these are the only characters you're allowed to play with. Not that it matters, this film more than likely won't see the light of day, if it ever really was going to in the first place.
Yes. Which is why I said that. I don't think this project happens without him, unfortunately.Didnt he come out and say that he wasnt approached for a specific character and chose to do Batgirl?
Just look at it as an opportunity to bring more attention to female directors in general. They arent getting a lot of high profile gigs - period. And if the path to equality means a little bit of pandering, so be it.
I don't like the idea of pandering, and I'm not sure how many women actually like the idea of it either.

I'd be surprised if we see this movie anytime soon now. Also, him not having a story doesn't look good on WB. Shouldn't there have at least been a pitch with an idea of a story?![]()
I said a little bit of pandering. To me, that means being a little on the nose when it comes to seeking out talent for projects like this. There are a plethora of male directors who could make an excellent Batgirl movie - but if equality is important (and it is), why not go after a woman?
Is it pandering? Sure. In an ideal world, would the studio simply choose the best person for the job, regardless of gender? Sure. But we dont live in that world, and if were ever gonna get there, we need to be willing to take the steps - even if the first few are a little awkward.
And I think it the long run pandering sends the wrong message.

What wrong message?
I dont necessarily disagree, but we have to do what we can with what we have and hopefully grow from there. And frankly, women could use more of a voice in the genre.
She has comics so it really isn't a good excuse. CBM have source material you can takes bits and piece from or straight up adapt. Not like the character has ever been in a movie or many animated shows.I'd be surprised if we see this movie anytime soon now. Also, him not having a story doesn't look good on WB.
