'Batgirl' movie?

If anything, GOTHAM CITY SIRENS and BATGIRL might be companion projects.

I could see them introducing Barbara in GCS in a cameo type role, and following up with BATGIRL.

See the notion that you cannot fit both this and GCS both in makes no sense to me. Marvel does this all the time, they're ultimately very different projects.

And no, I don't assume that Batgirl takes precedent over Harley (not to mention Ivy, and Catwoman, etc) these days.

Oh, you can fit them both... but will they? Only so much money, only so much time, only so many resources... I'd be happy with both, but i can also see that this Batgirl announcement could affect the way GCS proceeds.

There is potential to have both GCS and BG released in the same calendar year, so you could indeed have some overlap.

In my dreams, the entire DCEU is controlled by Reeves, Whedon & Vaughn...

Wow. Good on WB here. Now this is what I'm talking about. Reeves, Whedon, and possibly Vaughn. That's a course correction. Let's hope WW and JL doesn't kill the momentum, but so far, thank God Silverman is in charge. I'm just concerned they're only carving a Batman cinematic universe now and slowly going into that just in case JL and WW and the others do poorly.

This is very exciting. I've just started to really appreciate Batgirl (I never liked how she's just an echo of a male hero, it's also like if you called Robin Batboy) so with Whedon, this is just the perfect fit. Whedon can only enhance and make better what's already there for what makes Batgirl unique and separate from Batman.

I wouldn't be surprised if WB offered him a development deal where if he makes this, he can make his original stuff, like that supernatural WWII script he wrote.

If these movies all work, there could be a chance they can actually compete with Marvel.

The quicker they move on from Snyder the better. Forget he ever happened.

Watch them set her up in Justice League.

Right before the big fight, a quick cut to dinner at the Gordon household so we can meet Barbara and hear about her deep urges to do something about all the crime in Gotham!

EW on what we can expect

The New 52 books feature her several years after the Joker attack, having recovered full mobility after experimental surgery, although she is still haunted by the near-death experience.

It’s unclear how much of that series, written by Gail Simone, will be incorporated into Whedon’s film, but sources tell EW the movie will follow Simone’s harder-edged storyline rather than the more comical, playful “Batgirl of Burnside” series that was rebooted in 2014, featuring the hero as a social-media obsessed student living in a hipster neighborhood of Gotham.

Whedon would not agree to direct a batgirl movie where every week he would need to ask WB and Snyder if what he wrotte would fit into the DCEU and continuity. Its obvious that WB will give him enough creative freedom for a standalone story. a 2:15 min tight script with a beginning and end. no sequel set ups. thumbs up. Do it Whedon.

Wow. This is almost best case scenario. It almost guarantees you we'd get some moments from her "glory days".

maybe it can be a Charlie's Angels type deal with Babs as Batgirl, Steph as Spoiler, and Cass as Black Bat/Orphan.

I was thinking the exact same thing.

It's seems to me that maybe the news has gone around Hollywood that the keys to the DCEU have been taken away from Snyder... and that's why we're seeing more major talent starting to step up for the second version of the DC movies universe project.

Whedon is the poster child for those who argue that hardcore fans are never happy and don't know what they want.

He goes from being god of the nerds, to making ONE movie (with a lot of studio interference apparently to boot) that the general consensus is "it's good, but not great." And suddenly it's all "he's horrible," and "any movie he's involved in will be a trainwreck" and blah blah blah.

It's laughably absurd really. The Russo's better hope that IF turns out great, otherwise people will probably turn on them really quickly as well.

Yeah, it's what happens when you hold someone up to such a high standard. We've seen it happen before.

It's Joss ****ing Whedon. I don't get it. He's made nothing but consistent great stuff since Buffy and when AOU isn't as great then goodbye. AOU is a good movie. Pretty flawed, but it's still one of the most interesting and weird of the MCU films. The baffling Black Widow controversy was stupid too. Whedon of all people deserves the benefit of the doubt by now. The internet just doesn't know what the hell it wants.

Can't post here due to profanity,

But Gail Simmone's twitter reaction to EW report is pretty funny

Not out of the realms of possibility. Hopefully Patty Jenkins was able to wrangle herself free of any influence with WW.

The best thing that has happened to the DCEU so far. Hope WB doesn't restrict the guy's talent.

I'm very happy to hear this even though it's not exactly surprising. A Batgirl of Burnside-inspired movie would be incredibly out of place in the current DCEU.

And to be completely honest, who would even want one? :o That run was fun, but weird and kind of shallow.

Marvel, Marvel, Marvel

Why do Marvel fans have to keep bringing up what Marvel does.

Let DC fans enjoy this announcement

Landing Whedon is a great move for WB, and a Batgirl movie has potential. Hopefully they'll let him do what he wants with it, rather than swooping in at the last minute to butcher everything.

No one is saying that DCEU isn't also working on non-Batman films. They are. However, it's not a sign of anything for DC to use Batman characters like this, since they are characters with prior solo success in comics and solid fanbases who fit neatly into the universe they've already created.

100% this.

Barbara Gordon puts them off because 'Bat'girl means another Batman to them and no diverse characters in DCEU. Fact is these legacy characters are established and very different from Bruce Wayne.

People are also seriously underestimating the Batman family's lore in DC comic books.
