Christopher Nolan's Inception comes out this Friday, and I know lots of people are excited about it because it looks great (check out Todd's review here). There are, however, groups of fans who are excited about it for an entirely different reason as well -- with Inception out of the way, Nolan can finally devote his full attention to the film Bat-maniacs have been clamoring for since the end of The Dark Knight: a third Batman film.

Over the past few years we've heard countless rumors about the project. They've all turned out to be false, but we do know Nolan is working on prepping the third film. Now, website io9 is reporting that Warner Bros. has registered a slew of new Batman domain names. What does this mean? Is the studio laying the groundwork for a viral marketing campaign for the next movie? It's possible. Read more after the jump ...

However, judging from the list of domain names, which include ArkhamCity.com and BatmanArkhamCity.com, I get the feeling these are probably for the Batman: Arkham Asylum 2 videogame. Maybe not all of them, though -- there are some intriguing ones buried in the list that might be for a new film: BatmanSiegeofGotham.com, WarinGothamCity.com,WheresBruceWayne.com, and BatmanGrandDelusion.com are just a few of the examples.

Whether any of these are for Nolan's third Batman movie or not, one thing remains clear -- we're sure to be hearing a lot of news and rumors about the film in the months ahead now that the filmmaker is free to concentrate on it. If you love comic movies in general and Batman in particular, that alone is good news.

Yeah, it just seems a little too soon for them to be really coming up with something. It was well after they had finished casting the movie before they actually started the game.

All of them are for the sequel to Arkham Asylum.

As soon as I read that regarding the domains, I knew people would assume it'd be for Nolan's third Batman film, lol.

Crap. No news on either the AA sequel or viral marketing for BB3. I will be all over the viral stuff again. I'm determined to snag me a cake with free cellphone, and also need me a new avatar.

Yeah, I'm with the majority. It's way too early for them to have even begin thinking about the viral campaign. Hell, the bulk of the pre-production won't even be finished.

They should not begin the viral campaign more than a year before release.

:awesome:

And plus, the viral marketing, if anything, will deal with the main villain, not Batman.

The viral marketing for TDK dealt with Batman a little, with the Sons of Batman (Batman copycats) site and the Gotham Times. It also dealt with Harvey Dent and the city at large.

TDK's viral marketing started in May 2007. :awesome:

My point is always by that time everybody was already cast and they had at least started shooting.

The more theatrical events were definitely for Joker, but the storyline expanded to include Dent, the fake Batmen, and the GPD.
