I apologize if this has been discussed here before, but I don't venture into this topic very often so I wouldn't know. Anyway, after having a lot of time to digest Arkham City, does anyone else think that Akrkham Asylum is the better game?

Kinda. It's less playable but sucks you in more.

I find AA to be more atmospheric and consuming. AC is great with its ridiculous freedom, but being caged up in that damn Asylum was just creepy. Maybe it was my increased comfort with the combat system in the sequel, but I was more 'on edge' in AA, like all kinds of hell was right around the corner. With AC, it was more a question of 'Whose ass am I kicking next?".

Overall, I easily give the nod to City. It's just deeper and more fun.

if only they took AA & AC and made it into one long game

AA definitely has a tighter story but that's the risk you take going full on free roam. AC has waay better gameplay and challenge rooms which I still play pretty frequently so I'm going with AC as the better

That's exactly how I feel and the major reason why I don't want the third game to be an open world Gotham. It would be such a stupid idea, imo.

I think my problem with Arkham City stems from how Rocksteady chose to go wider instead of deeper, and in doing so I think they spread everything a little too thin.

I'll use the villains as an example. While I generally like the bad guys more in Arkham City, I feel like the Arkham Asylum villains were much better utilized and a lot more fleshed out. Arkham City in comparison feels like a never-ending string of cameos, with characters more often than not leaving the story as suddenly as they entered it.

I feel the same way about many aspects of the game, but that's just one example to help make my point.

Also, I agree about the open world. I never felt like it added anything meaningful, and truth be told, it was kind of poorly implemented. I really hope they go back to Arkham Asylum's hub structure for Arkham 3, but I doubt they will.

AA has got a better story and I prefer the more linear approach to it. The Asylum makes for a great creepy claustrophobic kind of setting. The walls of Arkham practically ooze madness.

Arkham City's open city atmosphere is more fun to explore. The gliding, grapnel boost, and fighting techniques are much better. However the story wasn't as good, several characters were short changed badly, and the side missions can get distracting. I also think they went overboard with the Riddler stuff.

I love them both, but I give the edge to AA.

Yeah, I guess I should make myself clear, I'm not hating on Arkham City. I adore both games, but I was just thinking about them recently and came to the realization that I liked the first one better.

Oh, I'm not hating either. Arkham City was my favorite game of 2011. Overall, I like AC slightly more, but I prefer the already mentioned creepy claustrophobic feel of the Asylum.

I just went back and played Asylum and City is the better game in just about every way. The only edge that AA may have is in the story, i liked the idea of Joker bringing Bats to the Asyulum, trapping him with all of these villains and the Asylum itself looked great. City has much better gameplay and much better replay value though as well as much better enemies. From the more diverse common thugs to the better implemented boss battles. Easily two of the best games this generation though.

I know they are the same franchise... but its hard to compare the two in the 'which is better' fashion... just a very different approach... AA was just creepy and compact and it worked... and then they pull off the free roam approach too. I had more fun playing AC, but AA (along with Bioshock) are on a list with a handful of games that generally just gave me the creeps.

Im excited for the 3rd... and dammit i want to drive the bat mobile or something!

played arkham city for the first time in months
it showed cause i was rusty as **** and out of practice on those challenge maps, all the more reason to pick it back up :D gotta get my arkham city groove back

Arkham city made you feel like you were batman, Arkham asylum made you feel like you were in a great batman story.

Would be sweet if they incorporated both of the best parts of AA & AC in to A3, an option to even take the Batmobile to Arkham Island and then back into certain parts of AC & then finally Gotham. The next game leaves so much to the imagination for what they can do, and what they will give us. I wonder if they are working on it now? I hope so, I want a new Batman game to be announced soon!!!!!

That batman skin is friggin awesome. I need to replay this. I beat it once and that was it.

yea what the hell is wrong with you man. Iv gone through the game like 5 times. its just brilliant. plus all those extra skins are just awesome. love that Batman Inc skin.

Altho am i the only one who wishes the alt costumes would take damage like the original? Love seeing batman all beat up towards the end of the game.

Same here. Well actually I've only played thru it 3 times...but I've also spent quite some time just free roaming and beating down thugs too. But yeah, this game makes my top ten and is just pure awesome.

Yea this is easily one of my favorite games this generation. I think i completed AA like 7 times and I'm currently on my 6th play through of AC. Next I'm gonna finish up getting all the riddler trophies for Catwoman, i haven't done any of her stuff outside of the mandatory story missions.
