Oh, he has a pathological need to save people. That's what makes Batman, Batman. Once he decides to stop saving even someone like the Joker, it would probably start to be easier for him, not trying to save other villains. And it would get to the point where he'd probably watch them die.
But the loss of someone like Joker shouldn't affect him like it did in Arkham City. I can buy him feeling like that because he lost Talia, or maybe when he lost Jason Todd. Or the amount of civilians he couldn't save, during one of his villain's killing sprees. But the death of the Joker? Especially when it wasn't his fault? It should leave him unaffected.
