Batman/Bruce Wayne Casting Thread - Part 1

It's a well known criticism of Dicaprio. Even a legend like Pacino has had some performances where he's just yelling and overdoing it (although he's still always entertaining). Subtlety goes a long way. Even the greats can chew up the scenery a little too much.

For example McAvoy in Future Past. His line delivery like "YOU ABANDONNNNNNNED ME!" on the plane, was hilariously over the top. I didn't feel his pain that the character was supposed to be feeling because he over acted that line. Of course it's also Singer's fault for probably not choosing a different take. Then Fassbender nails his response (when the plane is shaking) with absolute intensity and fire, and it doesn't sound comedic like Charles in the same scene.

Point: Fassbender could play this character because he has learned to control himself as an actor and use his eyes to tell a story without even saying a word. McAvoy is simply not good enough yet to match that quiet intensity. Just like Gyllenhaal and Gosling and Bale and Hardy.

Yes I know. That's why I was laughing and can't take you seriously any more.

You claim that he overacts from time to time. hahahhahha!

Seriously, The dude is the crowned king of overacting. He rarely performs with subtlety.
I don't think you were joking when you said this and so I can't take you seriously anymore.

Leo doesn't ALWAYS over act. That would be an exaggeration. Just like the crowned king comment. He's a damn fine actor, and sometimes the yelling suits the characters he plays (like Denzel or Pacino). Sometimes it's overcooked. One can say the same about Nicholson with his facial expressions.

I see what you're saying, but in no way was this a forced delivery on McAvoy's part. It's quite the opposite, in fact, as he was likely channeling genuine anguish from a painful memory or what have you so as to evoke a visceral kind of empathy from the audience. (For what it's worth, it resonated with me just fine).

Funny you should say that. McAvoy's especially good with his eyes and mannerisms in general. He even knows how to use (see: react to) other actors' word and body language cues so as to add additional nuance to his own performance, which is harder than it sounds.

Whatever the case, it's not like your opinion's going to change overnight, but I really think you're selling the guy short.

Well, you know, the thing about Tom Cruise is that, yeah, he can get physical and loves to do his own stunts, but his age is a drawback and he just always seems a little smug, doesn't he? Plus, we don't need all that Scientology press...

Oh, so we aren't just throwing out random actors who'll never play this role?

I absolutely loved the delivery of that "you abandoned me!" line from DOFP. He nailed it, and that's actually one of the more memorable moments from that movie imo.

James McAvoy is 5'7, way too short for Batman. He doesn't suit the character at all either. Fassbender is a far better choice.

Both of them are fantastic actors. Hard to say who's better, I think they both work well as leads. McAvoy tends to be more likable and relatable, while Fassbender excels at playing cold characters.

Honestly the only actor that could top Bale is Gyllenhaal. I really think he's going to get it.

I agree w/ this for the most part. Hell, I'm even warming to Gyllenhaal, so..

hahahahaha! yes, Yes he does. Its not even an exaggeration in the slightest. It's common knowledge but whatever. It's not an argument to be had. Only blind fans don't see it. This is the last thing I'll say to you about this. Your last few comments are just crazy to me. But you feel how you feel.

McAvoy could play a Batman you could cheer for and relate to. I'm not saying Fassbender couldn't but I don't picture him being a likable Batman at all.

Everytime that part came up with people around me "YOU ABANDONED ME!" a lot of people laughed out loud at his delivery. Happened both times I saw it in the cinema and also with friends at home. Dude can't do emotion with any subtlety. But like I said, he was fantastic in Split.

Anyways, Charles and Erik will never be Batman.

McAvoy is a solid actor, but I'd agree Fassbender is more talented. Though he seems to pick some really garbage films. McAvoy is too short to pull of BW though.

It really seems Gyllenhaal is the ideal choice. Talented performer. A-list status. Is only 37 but can easily look younger. 5'11 which is a good enough height.

would have been great to see Gyllenhaal as a villain in a Batman franchise as well. Dude seriously has talent. It's a total crime that he only has 1 Oscar nomination.

Could have easily gotten nods for Nightcrawler, Prisoners, End of Watch.... and he might miss out on Stronger.

I was actually fancasting him as Hal Jordan :funny:, never did I realize that most of his roles were dark and disturbed characters, much more like our beloved Batman.

Btw, this can be our young Bruce Wayne at his parents' graveyard. This was in late 2014 or something. Dude looked really young.

gotta see Jake in the Keaton or Bale mask.
The design of this mask is absurd no matter whose in it.

A lot of people laughed at Bale's "where is the trigger" line as well; there are even memes devoted to it. For others, I'm sure his delivery was just fine. People perceive things differently, man.

Dude can't do emotion with any subtlety.

Not true.

Probably not, but you never know. I mean.. who would've thought that Ben Affleck would be Batman? :oldrazz:

Yeah, physicality is definitely important if you want to convey that Batman is more than just an average billionaire in a costume.
