Batman doesn't shoot the guy in BEGINS ... the thug is pulling the trigger, and to deflect it from hitting him head on, Batman grabs the thugs trigger hand and points the guy's hand w/ gun at the other guy's foot ... thus hitting him. Batman doesn't pick up the gun and shoot the guy ...

I beleave it was when the introduced Robin to the books!!!!!They felt that more kids were now reading the books so Batman should not kill anymore.

I love the scene in Batman Returns when Keaton straps a bomb to the fat man and backhands him down the well.
