Batman Forever hidden gem?

The Robin costume was terrible, though. I don't mean the look of it, just the way it was designed.

Yep. It honours the comics yet still gets it wrong somehow. That mask is part of the problem, plus the sheen on the colours.

With the exception of the crazy nipples and oversculted abs, I quite like the 'Nightwing' style B&R Robin costume.

I was 10 years old when I saw Forever and I loved it. Looking back now? It's a Batman film for kids. That's not it's intention obviously but when my little brother wants to watch a Batman movie it's always the one I turn to.

It was it's intention to me more for kids because Returns got backlashed for being too dark and scary for the kids.

That is correct. If I recall correctly, when Returns came out, there was a considerable amount of backlash regarding the dark tone of the movie, so WB pressed for a more kid friendly release in it's next release, which was of course Forever.

Hence we had the brighter color pallettes, the costume sheens, the overall tone which was of course more comic bookish.

yeah, the backlash about the dark tone was even bigger than I thought originally - see the last paragraphs at http://www.gothamalleys.blogspot.com/2010/09/nightmare-that-tastes-like-candy-was.html

When asked about the tone of TDK, Nolan himself brought up BR as being too dark and having some disturbing images

I consider the opening fight scene in this movie where Batman destroys Two Face's goons as best fight scene in all Batman movies.
It kinda illustrates how Batman would fight in close combat situations.

With lots of gadgets?

No...it's a solid sequence. He uses the element of surprise, his environment, his martial skills and what he has to work with to get the job done.

Must agree the opening action sequences are well done, in a grand heroic scale. The sound mix is also nice, i like the gun shot sounds

Always liked the score too, especially Gotham in Peril track

I think I put it on the same level as the Daredevil movie--if it had the elements that were actively annoying and obnoxious removed and was pared down in some kind of Director's Cut, it would probably be more serviceable. As it is Tommy Lee Jones' take on Two-Face kind of ruins it, along with the basic plot of sucking people's brain power being ridiculous on its face.

I preferred Riddler's brain drain device over penguin commandos.
