Batman R.I.P.

Which titles are actually required reading to understand wtf is going on? I've not been following along and I need to get caught up in all besides "Batman".

For Morrisons run you should read Batman and Son, Black Glove, and Resurrection of Ra's.

Is Black Glove any good? Because I already know the other two suck major but haven't read that one yet.

The Black Glove hardcover has the International League of Batmen story...

Awesome artwork. HORRIBLE story.

the trade also has the 3 Ghosts of Batman thing in it, but still. the International League of Batmen....:ikyn

I thought as much, Morrison rarely fails to deliver on a truly random an ridiculous (not in a good way) Batman story. I don't want to sound like a petty Morrison hater, but I just don't think he understands Batman. A lot of his other work is brilliant, but he just has awful characterisation in the Batverse. The Al Ghuls are beyond repair and totally screwed as characters now, as is Son of the demon which was a great Talia/Bruce love story.

And like you say: International League of Batmen

I vote that Final Crisis Retcons everything Morrison's done on Batman out of continuity.

i think the three ghost of batman are the only good thing to come out of Morrison's run (and Jezebel's breakdown of Bruce's psyche in the beginning of RIP). i wish that story/plot point was being fleshed out more or being the focus rather than....well whatever the hell Morrison is trying to accomplish here.

This thread has officially reached broken record status.

;i've loved all of morrisons batman work so far. the only thing lacking has been the resurrection of Ra;s....but it got the job done.

I admit Morrison has me intrigued but i hate his whole "I will not show you ANYTHING until the final issue" approach to writing. Its so gimmicky and its shows that he's just buying time. After 5 issues Morrison could've given us something to work with to tide us over, but instead we got 5 issues of "huh?". Dini's "Hush" story was an example of a perfect way to design an arc, moving things along in every issue and revealing stuff too along the way, not waiting till the very last issue to explain and reveal absolutely everything.

Morrion's style might work depending who Dr.Hurt actually is, and this story continues in Final Crisis and whatnot. :p But i agree Dini's Hush story was an excelent way to portraye Hush's past.

dude, i'm Over it already-
i've forgotten what it was like to care about Anything here other than it just being Over and onto whoever's writing next- in the 'meta' sense (since no discussion of GM is complete without reference to his 'meta-ness'), this uncle fester wannabe has No concept of how to pace a story so as to keep the audience involved and/or interested.
like some have said, parceling out the interesting bits along the way helps out with that, so if there Is a delay, there's something to chew over during the wait, but this saving it all for a last ish that just Keeeeeeps getting pushed back...well, i've never seen so many people so completely over an ongoing story as i'm reading here and it cheers me to see so many of you waking up disoriented and disappointed from the hype-fog we've been lost in since GM took over.
i mean, you guys and grrls out there...if you delayed at Your job Anywhere NEAR this often or this much, wouldn't you be fired?
i'm even done complaining about GM here. obviously this mental midget's been coddled too long by a codependent editor in quife absolutely lackin da nutsak.
dan d'idiot can kiss on my Asscheeks.
bring back denny oneill and dick giordano. these guys didn't display their love of the dark knight with tardy plagierisms and used car salesman hype. damn these posers.

had a story akin to RIP came around at the end of 52, or even in the place of infinite crisis or just after, i may well have been more receiving, even though i wouldn't feel it that the story was exhausted, as it could be argued that a natural ending, of sorts, had been reached.
I agree. I mentioned earlier in this thread that IC was pretty much the ideal point to tell this sort of story.

I thought as much, Morrison rarely fails to deliver on a truly random an ridiculous (not in a good way) Batman story.
I don't see how any of his Batman stories have been "random" at all. They are the exact opposite of random: they were each precipitated by previous stories in the Batman universe.

I just don't think he understands Batman.
Then you haven't read his JLA, I guess. In any case, what, precisely, is incorrect about Batman's characterization in Morrison's run on the title?

And like you say: International League of Batmen
Morrison did not create the International League of Batman. That, like the Batman of ZEA, Dr. Hurt, and the isolation chamber experiment, were all mined from pre-Crisis stories.

;i've loved all of morrisons batman work so far. the only thing lacking has been the resurrection of Ra;s....but it got the job done.
I don't believe Morrison was responsible for that (though I couldn't say for sure). It struck me as an editorial-driven thing.

I admit Morrison has me intrigued but i hate his whole "I will not show you ANYTHING until the final issue" approach to writing.
To be fair, this isn't exactly what he's been doing. He's revealed plenty throughout his run--the nature of the isolation chamber and Batman's past with Dr. Hurt, the origin of the three Batmen, the nature of the ZEA Batman, and the function of the Black Glove organization. We are still waiting, of course, for him to piece it all together in a way that makes sense, though.

Batman dead doesn't mean Bruce Wayne is dead. :P

Indeed. We already know Bruce doesn't die, because Morrison has said so repeatedly. Moreover, the USAToday article says Batman retires after being "shaken" by a "secret from his past."

The "Thomas and Martha were wackjobs" element of the story is just waiting to be brought back up, since its only really been mentioned like twice and never to Bruce. I'm not saying its true, but its gotta play a larger part than it has so far.
