see, I don't really care about the lyrics most of the time. Many of Robert Plant's lyrics are likeable but laughable.
I primarily am obsessed with the genius of Jimmy Page and John Bonham, and admire the genius of John Paul Jones.
Robert Plant (insanely) plundered many blues classics LYRICALLY, but the music is a million light years from being a "cover".

I actually have a collection of all of the original songs that they "ripped off" (it's fascinating to hear), and it's weird to hear the exact same lyrics that I always associated with Led Zeppelin from my ignorant youth.
But uh, heh, none of those old greats are playing anything remotely near the guitar that Jimmy wrote.

Go listen to Memphis Minnie doing "When The Levee Breaks" and it will become apparent that, despite the words Robert's singing, it isn't a "cover".
Entirely different music.

Yeah, over at imdb I tore apart some dumbass who said 70 % of Zeppelin's songs were blues rip off's with riffs applied.

That's a thing people like to say, kind of like when they say, "America is a Democracy" or "Intelligent people don't stoop to name-calling."
Rolls off the tongue nicely, but is still utter bulls***.

Out of those: The Doors

Of all time: CSNY or Creedence Clearwater Revival

Nah, I wasn't saying that they were ripping off the tunes, just that they didn't write the lyrics to several of their songs. The same is true for many of the late 60s and early 70s bands. Cream, The Stones, Aerosmith... all did blues songs. Which version of Crossroads do I prefer; Cream's or Robert Johnson's? Cream's definitely. Which version of Call Me The Breeze; Skynyrd's or J.J. Cale's? Skynyrd's.

Album by album...

First Zeppelin album...

Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You- written by Anne Bredon
You Shook Me- written by Willie Dixon and J.B. Lenoir
Dazed and Confused- came from the song "I'm Confused" by Jake Holmes of The Yardbirds
I Can't Quit You Baby- written by Willie Dixon

Second Zeppelin album...

Whole Lotta Love- rewrite of the song "You Need Love" by Willie Dixon
Bring It On Home- similar to the song "Bring It On Back", and which Zeppelin lost a royalty lawsuit

Third Zeppelin album...
Gallows Pole- traditional folk song

Fourth Zeppelin album...
When the Levee Breaks- originally by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie

Physical Graffiti...
Boogie with Stu- heavily influenced by the song "Ooh, My Head" by Ritchie Valens

Coda...
We're Gonna Groove- written by Ben E. King and James Bethea
I Can't Quit You Baby- written by Willie Dixon

On the copy of Coda in the box-set of studio albums...
Travelling Riverside Blues- written by Robert Johnson

...so all together an astounding 12, out of how many songs?

Not even close to being half

But under any definition twelve still falls under several I love Zeppelin, they are definitely in my top ten, and I'm not trying to trash them. I'm just saying that Ronnie and the boys deserve just as much praise as gets blindly thrown at Zep, much of it by people who don't know any of the history of the band or their songs.

Since everyone's listing their top 30 songs from their favorite bands, what the hell, I'll throw in my two cents:

A Day in the Life
Strawberry Fields Forver
Rain
I am the Walrus
I'm Only Sleeping
She Said She Said
Revolution (the David Frost show version)
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
The Abbey Road Medley (You Never Give Me Your Money, Sun King, Mean Mr. Mustard, Polythene Pam, She Came in Through the Bathroom Window, Golden Slumbers, Carry that Weight, The End)
Happiness is a Warm Gun
Julia
Dear Prudence
Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band/ With a Little Help From My Friends
Something
Here Comes the Sun
I've Got a Feeling
Two of Us
Don't Let Me Down
Get Back
Dig a Pony
Let it Be
Help!
I Me Mine
Here, There, and Everywhere
Blackbird
In My Life
You've Got to Hide You're Love Away
Cry Baby Cry
I'm Looking Through You
Tommorow Never Knows

LOL, th^t I can relate to, 'cause, for me, what seems to happen a lot,...I love Aerosmith, they are the real deal.
But To me, they're just really cool guys who know how to Rock ('cause they learned from the Best).
So I'm talking about how much better Zeppelin is, how they're actually Rock GODS instead of Rock STARS,...but suddenly it sounds like I'm bad-mouthing Aerosmith, lol, which would never be my intention.Hahahaha

I like their songs that Rock.
"Urgent" is an under-rated classic, if you think of it as a DEVO song, it's genius.
And I'll never flip the channel on the might of Juke Box Hero.

But the "I wanna know what Love Is" s*** has got to go.:(
