ever since I started watching the Bleach anime a few years ago, I thought it would be cool if it were made into a live action film.
Ideally, if they could pull it off, it would be great!
However, the question is.......can they pull it off??
That.....I'm not too sure.
There's a TON of important characters in the Bleach universe ( just look at how many captains, vice-captains, 3rd seats, etc. there are in Soul Society! ). And they all have distinct personalities, motivations, backstories, relations, etc.
Naturally, some are going to get "short-changed" and that's bound to p*** off fans.
Plus, one of the appeals of Bleach is seeing all the cool zanpakatous, and their shikai and bankai powers/forms, and the costumes/transformations that accompany them. Some of those can get quite elaborate. Can you pull those off in live action without it coming across as cheesy and goofy?
Not to mention, the actual story is still ongoing ( the ultimate fight with Aizen ). What story arc are they going to adapt? Will they create a new story arc?
And, inevitably, Hollywood will have to "americanize" the story and characters to appeal to the "mainstream" audience in the West. And Bleach has heavy Asain influences. I mean, Soul Society itself is based on feudal Japan, with the shinigamis based on samurais, and they all have asian names ( so do their zanpakatous! ). Are they going to change all the names to English?
So, while I'm excited that they are planning to do a Bleach movie, logistically, I'm not sure how they're going to pull it off without ******* it up.
Personally, if they were to make a live action film based on an anime series, I'd love to see one based off of the Blood+ series. I know they just made a Blood movie, but I prefer the Blood+ story and characters more.
I watched that show a few years ago, and absolutely fell in love with the story and characters. For me, it was very touching and emotional, and I cried at the end. In fact, I'm rewatching the whole thing again.....lol.
I think Blood+ would lend itself better to a live action film than Bleach. The backstory and mythos, while complex, is not as complicated as Bleach's. There's not as many characters to focus on. Plus, it's an interesting twist to the cliched/traditional vampire/vampire hunter story.
And, the cast is more racially diverse, with most of the characters actually being non-Asian with non-Asian names. Some characters that are more "racially ambiguous" ( like Saya's adopted brother Kai......who always struck me as being more western than Asian ) could easily be made American/Western ( Kai could become Kyle, for example ).
but....that's just my 2 cents.....lol.
