Because Dragonball Evolution turned out so well...

So you are using the failure of DB:E as the prediction for all future manga-to-film adaptation
Come now.

Well so far, there hasn't been one American-made manga/anime-to-live-action that's been good.

I swear, why can't they at least keep this s*** animated?

Hahaha I bet they only jumped on this due to the recent plagiarism claims, it will of course fail they will **** up Ichigo, Aizen and co.

Ha! Good title (though most people won't know what the thread is about)

We as fanboys are required by law to have final say on the casting choices of both Orihime Inoue and Rangiku Matsumoto. End of story.

Hollywood knows what it's doing. You thing they make billions of dollars just churning out over-budget, underwritten scripts with stunt casting and CGI? I don't think so.

My question is, do they expect people to buy Americans with clearly asian names? An American actress playing someone named Rangiku Matsumoto? Only a few characters transcend well to being a different nationality than they were portrayed as in the manga/anime.

And you just know Kon is going to look cheesy as **** in live action. That is if they even do him. Save Piccolo they took out all the ''eccentric" looking characters in the DB adaption.

I know people who said Dragonball Evolution looked awful, but they saw it anyway because it was Dragonball-related and they loved the show as kids. And I'm sure they're not alone. I know fans of the show generally hated the movie, but dollars speak louder than reviews for people putting out movies like this. With Dragonball making a profit, similar things were pretty much inevitable.

I'm not in love with Bleach, but I'll still refuse to watch this if I have to pay for it in any capacity. I've made it clear in some past threads that I'm strongly opposed to live action anime adaptations, but Bleach is an exceptionally bad idea. I just don't see anything about it translating well, especially not when an American studio is adapting such a decidedly Japanese manga.

The excuse a lot of people use when it comes to these things is, "they don't LOOK asian". You maybe get the occasional character in an anime that is drawn to look asian, but the names, man...the names.

I think Asian American actors are going to be cast and mixed in there with Asian born actors.

the problem is where to find an Asian American actor (other than Maggie Q) who can do action roles.

DB:E WAS awful...regardless of if you're a fan of the show/manga or not. if someone liked DB:E then i'm sorry to say but that person simply has bad taste in movies. that being said...you're partially right when you say "dollars speak louder than reviews". unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), DB:E didn't make much money at all...and even though it made more than it's budget, it didn't make enough to churn out a profit. it cost $30million to make and it only made $57.5million. typically, a movie needs to earn 3 times it's budget in order to make a solid profit and DB:E didn't even make twice it's budget.

DB:E is a horrible example of how to go about adapting a beloved anime into a live action movie, and a PRIME example of how Hollywood tends to screw up anime turned live action movies in process of exploiting them.

ever since I started watching the Bleach anime a few years ago, I thought it would be cool if it were made into a live action film.

Ideally, if they could pull it off, it would be great!

However, the question is.......can they pull it off??

That.....I'm not too sure.

There's a TON of important characters in the Bleach universe ( just look at how many captains, vice-captains, 3rd seats, etc. there are in Soul Society! ). And they all have distinct personalities, motivations, backstories, relations, etc.

Naturally, some are going to get "short-changed" and that's bound to p*** off fans.

Plus, one of the appeals of Bleach is seeing all the cool zanpakatous, and their shikai and bankai powers/forms, and the costumes/transformations that accompany them. Some of those can get quite elaborate. Can you pull those off in live action without it coming across as cheesy and goofy?

Not to mention, the actual story is still ongoing ( the ultimate fight with Aizen ). What story arc are they going to adapt? Will they create a new story arc?

And, inevitably, Hollywood will have to "americanize" the story and characters to appeal to the "mainstream" audience in the West. And Bleach has heavy Asain influences. I mean, Soul Society itself is based on feudal Japan, with the shinigamis based on samurais, and they all have asian names ( so do their zanpakatous! ). Are they going to change all the names to English?

So, while I'm excited that they are planning to do a Bleach movie, logistically, I'm not sure how they're going to pull it off without ******* it up.

Personally, if they were to make a live action film based on an anime series, I'd love to see one based off of the Blood+ series. I know they just made a Blood movie, but I prefer the Blood+ story and characters more.

I watched that show a few years ago, and absolutely fell in love with the story and characters. For me, it was very touching and emotional, and I cried at the end. In fact, I'm rewatching the whole thing again.....lol.

I think Blood+ would lend itself better to a live action film than Bleach. The backstory and mythos, while complex, is not as complicated as Bleach's. There's not as many characters to focus on. Plus, it's an interesting twist to the cliched/traditional vampire/vampire hunter story.

And, the cast is more racially diverse, with most of the characters actually being non-Asian with non-Asian names. Some characters that are more "racially ambiguous" ( like Saya's adopted brother Kai......who always struck me as being more western than Asian ) could easily be made American/Western ( Kai could become Kyle, for example ).

but....that's just my 2 cents.....lol.

I want to be excited about this I really do because Bleach could be pretty badass in live action but Billy has made a great point about them casting American in the roles. There is no way in hell they can cast any White americans in this movie. Also the fact that Peter Seagal is involed also worries me I don't want him anywhere near this project. If WB can get smart and get a Japanese director on board with this then I can feel safe either that or Synder or The Wachowski's.Especially The Wachowski's since they respect anime.

It's going to be another Racebender type deal. People will say they're limiting themselves by trying to go for an all asian cast, but hey.

Oh well,..let's cue up some of the logic from TLAB boards:

"they don't look Asian so race doesn't matter"

"it's fantasy, so they could be any race"

"it has Asian influences, but it's fantasy so race doesn't matter"

Wash, rinse, repeat...

sigh...

This is gonna suck, if the American Death Note script is anything to go by.

The only Anime or manga adaptation I want to see any time soon, is Battle Angel Alita by James Cameron. I just can't see them not ****ing up Bleach when they try to americanize the **** out of it.

I can already see them moving the characters out of Japan and giving them slightly different names because otherwise it wouldn't fit with them all being american actors. Of course the over-the-topness will be radically toned down and we'll have american and japanse myth and folklore mixed together to make sense out of the whole mess.

Just. Don't. Do. It.

Nathan your avatar is fantaaaastic. final fantasy?
