Batman Begins BEGINS Costume Sculpt...My work in progress

I'm back to working on this and although it still needs work I'm pleased with how it's progressing. I cant find the original thread so I'll just keep updating the cowl sculpt here.

-mouth opening still off
-top of head too arched inward but I think the over all shape is pretty close though.

Sorry for the bad pics..time to get a new camera.

Enjoy.

Damn you David..... why ?
Why ?
Why can't I have the talent to make my own Begins costume and make it look that real....why ?

It looks great David

How long 'til you're jumping around Toronto beating up criminals in the suit? (ie. how long until it's totally finished? :) )

How long??
No idea....I keep giving myself deadlines and probably being overly optimistic in my abilities to finish this off because I keep taking longer and longer.

It's a difficult sculpt...and I have my regular costuming gig during the daytime so I'm doing this in my spare time...I really hope to have the finished chest and cowl come months end...legs in the works...belt being made by my buddy and it soooo rocks....it's all coming together but I dont want to rush it for the sake of finishing it and possibly compromising the over all impact or accuracy of it.

To me..so far so good...it wont be 100% accurate but I really hope to do the best I possibly can then you guys be the judge if I pulled it off or not. :)

By all means, take your time. I'm sure it'll turn out amazingly.

David, can you also turn wine into water...you turned a clump of clay into a batsuit...just thought i would ask...Keep up the great work!.

I think the ears are a bit too far back on the head, may not be, but I think they are. They also look like they should be a bit wider but I'd need a side view to be able to tell.

As for the mouth I think the top part needs to be less straight across;

But AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought that pic might help.

Oh and from one artist to another, I think your bat suit (the torso part) is still missing something, um, oh I got it, the Bat ;) :p :D

I am really just kidding about that part. I know your getting the rest down around it.
That actually raises a question, will the emblem be part of that sculp or done separately?

But it truely looks phenomonal, as

Again AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just a suggestion;

So...what have you done in about 20 hours?? lol just thought i'd ask,..am as anxious as anyone. :gg:

David, i know this is alittle late in the game to perscribe "Fix This" quotes...but, since you always welcome them, i think i'll state a few that i see.
Fix This:

*the neckline you are doin looks V-ish..though the Begins is more of a mix between a U and a V.
*the i guess cod piece that wraps around the Begins suit is more softened and curvy..yours looks kinda jagged-y
*I don't know if your suit is made to your measurements but it looks as if the sides are alittle too broad and not smoothed about and cutting in rather than just straight down.
*also, take a look at the hips, one seems to go sharper upwards than the other one.

Thats all i can see from the pics,..still LOVE the suit, just a few tips...I know you stated its the Begins suit brother but then again you said as close as possible without stealing it
Good Luck, i know how much teddise and complicated this can become...keep up the hard (and great) work.

I dont think the sholders are too broad...i just think its the difference in how the angle of the camera was wen the picture was taken. Look at the pic of DAVES SUIT....its more of a low shot....and the BEGINS PIC...is an eye level shot...:)

Sorry about last post, re-reading it, it confuses me.
whenever i said : *I don't know if your suit is made to your measurements but it looks as if the sides are alittle too broad and not smoothed about and cutting in rather than just straight down.

I really meant that the spot between the endpoints of the armpit to the tip of the hips,...slanted inward, looks like David's is just straight down with a tiny bit of slanting.

:poops sorry, BFB!... i thought you meant his sholders were too broad:)

just a simple misunderstanding

I the sculpt looks wider, it's because the suit in the movie is made of floppy rubber, and that picture from the flick isn't an accurate illustration of what it looks like while someone is wearing it.

Looking good David, it's a damn shame we couldn't purchase one from you....

There is truth to this because the suit is glued down to a neoprine undersuit. The undersuit is meant to fit Bale tightly and stretch onto him so as a result when the suit is not on him it looks much tighter or even smaller. That pic of the suit in the closet does not show an accurate depiction of the suit when worn.

As a result my side areas are a bit wider in the sculpt but at the same time will wrap around the person wearing it and take his body shape while adding bulk to the upper torsoe. My sculpt was about a CM of clay thick on the lifecast and that's more or less what the thickness of the finished suit casting will be.

The neck V opening has already been corrected but again...there are several images of it and some do not correspond with the pic of the chest hanging in the closet.

The cod piece...yes, mine needed some more work and is where I'm now at. Good Eye..:)

The shoulders to me seem fine...and pretty spot on so I wont be doing any work there.

The bottom line is I am not sculpting it on Bales lifecast and the life cast used is not in the exact same position as Bales was either...so there will be differences on that alone. Not to mention that I am just a guy making a costume...hoping to do it justice and be lucky enough to get it right. Some aspects will be real close and others will be even closer but I'd be fooling myself if I believed I could replicate it 100% accurately from just pics alone for reference. So....there will be 'some' differences. As long as those differences still allow for us to look at it and see it as being an accurate replica then I'll know I've done my job correctly here.
If obvious elements stick out as odd or off, then of course it'll not be as good as I wanted it to be....and I'm hoping to not end up there so I really appreciate all the critiques and feedback to date.
:)

A few more updates on the cowl..

Keep in mind I added the horns in just for the pics...they're way off and not even roughed in properly.

Focus on the left sculpted side, right side on screen...the opposite side is only roughed in.

It's getting there...still needs work on getting that fierce bad a$$ look to it but I'm getting there.

alright this is great but here's my question: is this the mask itself or the mold that will be used to put the the latex on? if this has been adressed I apologyze. Thanks for clearing that up.

What you are seeing is the sculpture of the mask made from clay.
A mold will then be taken of this sculpture which will be what will allow me to reproduce this in rubber.
Once the mold is made of this sculpture, it is removed from the sculpture...and subsequently the sculpture is usually destroyed. Rubber is injected into the mold and when it's cured you can remove it and you'll have a copy of your sculpture but cast in rubber. Which in this case is my cowl.
