Umm just askin again but to David I was wondering how you got interested in this proffession bcuz I love art and I'm very interested in how exactally make these great sculpts. Like what material and machinery, and how much it would cost. Do you draw up a skecth b4 hand? that kind of thing.
How did I start?
Good Question...
Since being a kid I've always loved costumes...and always made my own for every Halloween.
In 1984 I made my first latex mask and chest appliance...Freddy Kruegar. No one believed I had made it.
That spawned interest in the Halloween world of costumers here locally....no internet back then.....and year after year I'd come up with something new and pretty radical....for back then..
Push came to shove....people asking me to make them halloween costumes or window displays with my work come halloween time....then the decision to start taking custom orders.
4 years ago I started my business and it's since expanded to include leather garments too....and soon fabrics as well.....Very exciting times for me ahead..
Drawings I always make for all my leather goods.
When working on a custom costume I usually make drawings based on what the client needs so he can approve the direction I'm looking to take with their idea.
More and more custom characters and concepts are being worked on which is a nice change from what I was doing even up to a year or so ago.
Now...fortunately, I can find the time to make costumes for myself also such as the begins suit I'm doing.
I started doing this because it evolved into something pretty big for me. I never just woke up and said "hey that would be cool to do". It was a fun hobby that started to take life on it's own and now has become my source of income.
Scared is not the way I'd define how I felt when I started this (but close enough) however I am happy to say that my wife has supported this from day one and together we've never looked back since.
I maintain that I have the best job in the world...to me at least...and that every day is full of exciting challenges.....incredible highs and terrifying lows...at the end of the day it certainly is a JOB...but one I utterly enjoy.
If you or anyone is looking to start something like this my advice is take it slow. Learn how to use materials and understand their costs. Be prepaired to make mistakes and be prepaired to have 50+ emails every single day...
To me...I'm living a dream come true.
David
