Batman Begins BEGINS Costume Sculpt...My work in progress

dyr1bat.jpg

   WOW!

That looks just awesome man! It looks better than the film's suit! I wish the film's suit was like that. The head is a perfect size to the body, not oversized or anything. So it makes the shoulders look broader. I think that might be what was wrong with the film's suit proportion on my eyes. I always thought the cowl was a bit bulky/big in the film's suit, but seeing this now, I'm sure that's what is making the film suit look weird from some angles.

Great work David and great work for who did the manip.

Thanks buddy.
Actually the Begins cowl is not nearly as bulky as some think. It has a 'beast' like look to it and I agree can look bulky in some shots but in the end it's a pretty sleek cowl that really plays well on the lighting it's being filmed under. It does have by far the widest neck we've seen yet but they still made it work in the context of the suit...at least I think so.

The clock is ticking...and I'm so happy to be in the final stages of this outfit!

Holy cow!
Your Batman costume is amazing!
Are you sure you didn't steal it from the Batman Begins costume department? ;)

I just think the movie cowl makes Bales head looks huge. That manip seems to have a much broader shoulder than Bale when he's in the suit, even though Bale is big for the movie. When you see him shirtless training, you see he has broad shoulders. But in the suit, because of the head seems so big, he doesn't look so broad shouldered. That was always a grip I had with all the film suits. The Kilmer Panther seems to be the one which had the head less pronounced. I was holping they would correct that now, since technology is much better.
Anyways, David, that's a great job you've done. Also, it's nice to talk to some open minded people who doesn't flame you when you have any criticism about the movie.
I hope you will get to work in the film industry one day and kick out some great costumes out of your studio. Your work is just plain fantastic and it's a damn shame you ain't doing that for big bucks. Shame on them I mean. Aren't they watching these boards?

You are EXTREMELY talented man, i cant even tell u how much i am hyped for the premiere now knowing i can see that suit in person. Seriously, great work.

you are my hero dude.got any pictures of the gauntlets yet? how are you tackling the gloves? again , you kick all kinds of ***!

David,

I am doing I am using Wet clay which I think you are also using for suit. I have a rough form of the cowl and have started to smooth out the surface but for the life of me I cannot get it smooth, I keep seeing small bumps and lumps. Is it possible that when the clay has dried I could use wet sandpaper to make the surface smooth.

Thanks
Damo

Damo,
DO NOT LET WET CLAY DRY!
That is not how it works. If it drys it will crumble and fall apart. Wet clay must stay moist. ALWAYS!

1) Always work with a spray bottle with water inside and lightly mist the sculpture with water occasionally. Dont overdo it with the water.
2) At the end of the day cover your sculpture in a black garbage bag so the moisture stays in the sculpture.

To get the sculpt smooth there are several steps you must go through. Smoothening out clay sculpts without sculpting tools is usually very tricky and doesnt give the same crisp results.
You need to get yourself some scraper tools. Scraper tools or rake tools come in many different shapes and designs. The easiest ones to use are usually 'kidney' tools as they are shaped like kidneys or half moons. Get yourself a few kidney tools with 'teeth' cut into them. The teeth area is the rake area of the tool. When you drag that area over your clay is digs into the clay and evenly distributes the clay around. Use a wider one first and go over your entire sculpt with it several times and in all directions crossing over the same areas multiple times.
Then repeat the same process with a finer rake tool meaning that it's teeth are not as wide...continue to repeat over and over again and you'll see that it'll start to evenly distribute your clay. Once you've used the finest rake tool you have you should then easily be able to smooth the remaining clay down by hand. Then, get a make-up sponge, dip it in water and use that to smooth down the surface of the sculpt once and for all.

Hope that helps a bit.

:)

Batcrazy,
Hey buddy thanks for the very kind words. As for the differing opinions on the film and what not....trust me, I have mine also. I'm sure we all do and I honestly just dig talking to people with differing opinions. It's thought provoking and makes for good posts in threads....not to mention I love it when someone points out something that I didnt consider on my own and it makes me go..."Hmmmmmmmmmmmm...maybe he's right?" I dont know...call me silly.:)
Either way I think we're all genuanly pumped at this stage for the movie....and that's a very good sign for Nolan and Co. I'm as happy for them as I am for us fans.

As for me working in the film world....thanks for saying so but I'm just not at that level yet. I consider myself a high end costume maker moreso than anything else. We strive for look and comfort in everything we do...sometimes we're successfull and sometimes not.....
The movie world has all sorts of different demands when dealing with costumes and in truth...I just dont know that that's where I want to be. I am very happy doing what I do and enjoy a comfortable amount of success doing so. More would probably be too much to take on but in life I guess you just never know.
Still, that was all very nice of you to say.
Come to toronto for the opening...Now I wanna buy you a beer...:)

David

Just wanted to get this topped again. I'm loving this sculpt. By the way David, did the new trailer give you any pointers as to how well your suit is shaping up?

Why don't we have more people like you in this boards David? We so need it so badly :(

I dig what you're saying about working with movies and all. I guess in the end, self satisfaction is what matters and I see you get lots of it from your work. I see you trully love it. I think you sure have the skills and talent on the level though. You're too humble man. But I guess that's a noble thing ;)

About that beer, hey, thanks for the offer :) The intention alone is the most important. Who knows. If I get to go to Toronto one day, maybe we really could grab a cold one and talk some Bats and comics in general for a good time. Keep on the top of it as you are now man. Your art is inspiring!

Benney,

Thanks man! The trailer didnt really show anything in the costume I hadnt already seen but it certainly was nice to see the suit in action for longer sequences now. It got me all pumped to finish this up and that by far is the best thing it could have done for me!!!!

Batcrazy,
Thanks again buddy. You're a valued member here in my book. As long as we're all here for the love of the bat then regardless of our own personal opinions or preferences it certainly makes for fun board. Fun is what it's all about and here fun seems to be the main focus for most everyone who posts!!!

Robocop,
Thanks for the kind words. :)
Unfortunately no. That suit is only for my own collection. It's been years since I've made something exclusively for me and that's probably why it's taken as long as it has to complete.
The new pics will (hopefully) really freak you guys out.
It's very hard for me not to post any new updates because I really do feed off of your kind remarks but the time really has come to start with finished pics....and that's what I want the next ones to be.

Thanks again to all for the very kind words and super cool support on this long and at times very frustrating project.

Yup...
A bunch of stuff...maybe too much actually.
Keep an eye on my website. All will be available through that. I have a new webdesigner to complete this darn thing and I think that after nearly 3 years it looks like it's Finally going to be completed.

All sorts of generic armor will be available.
Hopefully you'll like what you see there. :)

David

I dont think it a good idea to plug my site so I'll PM it to you.

Here's some of the chest again.
Here I was repairing the warped area at the base of the cod and tweaking the neck area. Also a small part of the left bicept. My collar area had too much of an indentation that I've since these pics fixed.
Other than that....chest is done.
