David,
I am doing I am using Wet clay which I think you are also using for suit. I have a rough form of the cowl and have started to smooth out the surface but for the life of me I cannot get it smooth, I keep seeing small bumps and lumps. Is it possible that when the clay has dried I could use wet sandpaper to make the surface smooth.
Thanks
Damo
Damo,
DO NOT LET WET CLAY DRY!
That is not how it works. If it drys it will crumble and fall apart. Wet clay must stay moist. ALWAYS!
1) Always work with a spray bottle with water inside and lightly mist the sculpture with water occasionally. Dont overdo it with the water.
2) At the end of the day cover your sculpture in a black garbage bag so the moisture stays in the sculpture.
To get the sculpt smooth there are several steps you must go through. Smoothening out clay sculpts without sculpting tools is usually very tricky and doesnt give the same crisp results.
You need to get yourself some scraper tools. Scraper tools or rake tools come in many different shapes and designs. The easiest ones to use are usually 'kidney' tools as they are shaped like kidneys or half moons. Get yourself a few kidney tools with 'teeth' cut into them. The teeth area is the rake area of the tool. When you drag that area over your clay is digs into the clay and evenly distributes the clay around. Use a wider one first and go over your entire sculpt with it several times and in all directions crossing over the same areas multiple times.
Then repeat the same process with a finer rake tool meaning that it's teeth are not as wide...continue to repeat over and over again and you'll see that it'll start to evenly distribute your clay. Once you've used the finest rake tool you have you should then easily be able to smooth the remaining clay down by hand. Then, get a make-up sponge, dip it in water and use that to smooth down the surface of the sculpt once and for all.
Hope that helps a bit.
Batcrazy,
Hey buddy thanks for the very kind words. As for the differing opinions on the film and what not....trust me, I have mine also. I'm sure we all do and I honestly just dig talking to people with differing opinions. It's thought provoking and makes for good posts in threads....not to mention I love it when someone points out something that I didnt consider on my own and it makes me go..."Hmmmmmmmmmmmm...maybe he's right?" I dont know...call me silly.

Either way I think we're all genuanly pumped at this stage for the movie....and that's a very good sign for Nolan and Co. I'm as happy for them as I am for us fans.
As for me working in the film world....thanks for saying so but I'm just not at that level yet. I consider myself a high end costume maker moreso than anything else. We strive for look and comfort in everything we do...sometimes we're successfull and sometimes not.....
The movie world has all sorts of different demands when dealing with costumes and in truth...I just dont know that that's where I want to be. I am very happy doing what I do and enjoy a comfortable amount of success doing so. More would probably be too much to take on but in life I guess you just never know.
Still, that was all very nice of you to say.
Come to toronto for the opening...Now I wanna buy you a beer...
