Looking forward to the eventual GL/PotA crossover. :o

If you look at the filmmakers we've had associated with the DCEU thus far it's pretty clear where the bad eggs are:

1. Zack Snyder
2. David Ayer
3. Patty Jenkins
4. James Wan
5. Matt Reeves

Hint: Two of these names are not like the others...

If you look at both Zack Snyder and David Ayer's track records, it's really not a shocker that they turned in divisive/panned movies critically. It still baffles me to this day that they let Zack Snyder carry on after Man of Steel. Mainly because they wanted to rush BvS into production for a 2015 release date and it got pushed back to 2016 anyway! Imagine where we would be if they cut ties with him after Man of Steel and course corrected then?

Hindsight is 20/20, but I just feel like the problems were so obvious and easily fixable.

Hopefully the worst days of the DCEU are behind us and Wonder Woman will be great, JL will be good, and they finally can hand the JL keys to someone other than Snyder.

Ben and Matt are gonna do something special with this one. I can feel it :)

I'm really not familiar with the guy, beside "Cloverfield" I don't think I've seen any other film of his, but I see he garners many positive reactions, so could someone fill me in? What would be his best work?

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Shows his finesse with big budgets, but also story and character. Great indicator of how he'll do with Batman.

But if you're really interested in his talents, just start chronologically. He's been progressively getting better with every film. It's nice to see the growth of a director's style, especially in the way he sets his shots up. He's been getting bolder and bolder with his staging.

Most recently he has directed "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" which was widely received well and was a box office success. He came on to the franchise and replaced "Rise of the Planet of the Apes'" Director Rupert Wyatt, so he's not new to jumping in on a franchise that's already in motion and putting his own stamp on it. He's also directing the sequel to "Dawn" titled "War for the Planet of the Apes" which also looks great.

Basically he has big budget experience and has pretty consistently made solid blockbusters with both critical and general audience praise, something the DCEU needs right now pretty desperately.

Its an unfortunate trend, but each film is its own project, and should be given a fair shake. I didn't outright condemn BvS after MoS. I didn't outright condemn SS after BvS. I won't outright condemn WW and JL after SS. And if those films suck, I won't outright condemn Aquaman either.

The fact that the first three films in the DCEU were polarizing doesn't automatically mean anything for The Batman, or any other DCEU film in general. It's all a matter of the right pieces coming together, even if by accident. Having a talented, visionary director at the top is a good start.

My hope is that the script isn't bogged down by unnecessary nods ands winks to other DCEU films, and that The Batman can function as its own stand-alone film. In that sense, all they need to do is focus on telling a strong Batman story, and not stress about shared universe connections (which are simply not needed). Do that, and the film should be fine.

Having said all that, I certainly understand your skepticism. I have some myself, but if I can't find some excitement towards these films I wouldn't bother spending my time here.

I honestly think once WW and JL are out of the way WB should just focus on the solo films. Keep it all in the same universe but bring some stability to the whole thing for a while and focus on the characters, not the team ups. Reeves' Batman could be the driving force behind that and could usher in a much needed new direction for the DCEU. Keep the focus on Batman, make little or no mention of the JL or the rest of the universe, and do the same with the other characters. Essentially keep it all under one roof but don't focus on it. It's too late IMO for the DCEU to have some type of arc like what Marvel are doing. Let Batman battle his rogues, Superman battle his, Wonder Woman battle hers, etc, and keep them out of each others way.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

If you haven't seen it, do so immediately.

Thanks for the info, guys. I'm really not into the "Planet of the Apes" franchise, but I'll check out his other stuff.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Let Me In are what made me a fan of him.

That's been my thought process for a while. Just let the stand-alones be stand-alones. A line here and there won't hurt, but let the Justice League films provide the connective tissue. We know it's a shared universe because we see the characters come together in those films. But when I go to see The Flash, I want to see the ****ing Flash. If there's a silver lining to that script getting a complete rewrite, it's that hopefully they're abandoning the Flash/Cyborg team-up angle. I have zero interest in that, and in my opinion that sort of mentality is precisely what's causing them so many problems. It was trying to cram so much crap into BvS that killed it.

Let these movies be their own things, instead of using them as springboards for something else.

Damn, I even might after all, as it should showcase his big budget skills the best, despite never liking the franchise.

I agree. I do think they should still have the occasional team up movie but if they want to do it but they could have a rotating roster of heroes similar to the JLU animated series. That way they could use the JL IP to give some lesser known heroes some exposure while simultaneously not interfering with the bigger franchises.

I like where this is going. If a character shows up in another's movie they have to be part of the story.

Like Xavier in Logan.

Otherwise, save the team ups for the team ups.

I would actually put off a second JL film for at least 5 years, no Gotham Sirens or Black Adam movie, just the core JL members. Let them develop first and foremost, then do another JL film. Stability is the key right now. That is of course if Affleck is still around. I'm still not 100% convinced he will be at this stage.

This is great. I'm reality happy with this pick.

I'm very cool with this. I think he's similar to Affleck in a certain way, but obviously with a better grasp of visual effects.

Have you ever seen "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" (2011)? Is your only exposure to the franchise the Charlton Heston film from the 60s/70s? If you answered no to the first question and yes to the second one I highly recommend you give the "rebooted" film series a try, it's played much more straight.

I was never really into the Planet of the Apes franchise either, but these new films have made a fan out of me. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a strong film, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is (for my money) one of the best sci-if films in recent memory. I'd definitely suggest checking both out.

Matt Reeves has been a fan-favorite to direct a superhero film for a while. Watch Dawn and you'll see why.

If War is as good as it looks this Apes reboot would probably go down as one of the most unexpectedly best trilogies of all time.
