Benedict Cumberbatch is Doctor Strange

The more I think about it I do want him to stick with his normal accent. I wasn't impressed by his american accent in August: Osage County.

Haven't heard his accent in that....but yeah making him British won't affect much.
The location of his backstory growing up doesn't really matter. As long it hits the important points with his family members it's fine.

I wasn't keen on it earlier but now I think changing his nationality to British will work well, just explain how he migrated from there due to some reason.

That and Black panther will inject freshness into an all American MCU

Hoping for something like this in regards to his aesthetic on screen:

I.e. mustache only and close cropped hair

Looks a bit old fashioned

That was awful, LOL! I loved Ruffahulk from the get go, and the guy was super ecstatic to be working with RDJ again and on such a huge project, so that was really embarrassing that the fans booed him like that. Pretty classless IMO, especially since he bounded onstage wanting to soak up all the SDCC energy.

Now he's one of the fan favorites and practically won over everyone's heart! :hrt: And he's great PR for Marvel/Avengers during filming.

One of the classiest and most humble actors around. Thats why it was so embarrassing. Oh the dark hearts of the fanboy community.

Fanboys like to act superior to the general audience, but only fanboys abuse a casting decision before they see the movie.

He's gonna kill it, I was sold on his voice alone but once makeup and costuming gets done with him he'll nail the look too.

Yeah, he's gonna crush it as the Sorcerer Supreme and audiences will love Strange. 2016 has so many performances that I can't wait to see. Like Cumby's Strange, Affleck's Batman, Leto's Joker, Boseman's Panther, Robbie's Harley, Smith's Deadshot, etc. Just...amazing.

Smith's deadshot will equal Smith's everything else, ie Will Smith being himself

The others though I agree, also Isaacs Apocalypse

Smith has turned in some great to stellar perforamces in films like The Pursuit of Happyness, Seven Pounds, Ali and I Am Legend that weren't like his "Big Willy" characters( MIB, Wild Wild West, Bad Boys, etc.) Even movies like I, Robot and Hancock had him in character. Ayer is the type of director that gets performances out of his actors, Smith will turn it out as Deadshot.

Those 'stellar' performances though (which aren't particularly great) still have Will smithness to them, seven pounds is probably one where you can't see any of his persona in there. I can't say I've seen a film of his where I was wowed by his talent, or him stretching his ability.

I'm not saying he's going to be bad, but I don't see his performance as something to look forward to when compared to the others you mentioned.

Smith's natural charm and charisma coupled with Deadshot's inherent badassery is why I'm excited to see the performance. I'm not asking for anything Oscar-worthy, but I can guess that Smith's performance will be one that resonates with audiences in a movie that's sure to feature other strong performances.

Edit: But yeah, about Strange. Lol

I wonder if Cumberbatch had any Doctor Strange comics in his pack he got from Marvel a few years ago when he visited the publishing sides offices in New York.

Regarding Smith as Deadshot...when you're making a summer blockbuster where your main protagonist is a bad guy that, IMO, requires someone like Smith. There might be many actors who could pull off Lawton better than Will but when you're asking general audiences to get behind a potential major franchise where they will be rooting for characters who are actually villains at heart(unlike GOTG despite the comparisons drawn) that's when you need major starpower if you can get it.

Anyway Benedict, despite a female fanbase who insist on his gorgeousness, will bring an outsider, unconventional quality to his superhero that Chris Evans, Hemsworth, Pratt and RDJ (nowadays) lack.

I'm only a bit worried that he'll look too..recognizable? I dunno I remember watching Star Trek and being dragged out of the movie a bit

I think he has a very niche recognizably. Before STID, he was known for Sherlock, which isn't an American show (thus limiting the audience to viewers of British television). I don't know the audience, but I suspect it's comparable to Parks and Recreation. Certainly, all are less recognizable than Paul Rudd.

Outside of the internet I didn't know Paul Rudd is so beloved.

I think Paul Rudd is super popular in America because I hear mostly American posters around here talk about how much they love Paul Rudd but I don't think he is particularly well know outside the U.S despite being in a number of popular films and television shows over the last 20 years.

Cumberbatch is more known and loved by the rest of the world than Paul Rudd. I bet more people know his name than Rudd, who is in fact more of a niche than Cumberbatch.

Comparing Parks and Recreation to BBC Sherlock

Sherlock gets more than triple the viewers in the US than Parks does (not counting all those who stream and download as soon as it airs on BBC), then considering Parks is barely known outside the US whereas Sherlock is licensed in 180 territories . A Chinese media group said it expected Sherlock and Downton to hit 160 million viewers in China in the next year or so.

So yeah they are not comparable.

Cumberbatch is known by his nickname Curly Fu in China.

Sherlock and Cumberbatch is big in China which I'm sure is another reason Marvel/Disney were happy to have him play Doctor Strange.

I got the 180 territories wrong it's actually 224,

Anyway yeah Chamber, when Cameron went to China and they did a Q and A he was asked a bunch of Sherlock questions, including could they hurry up season 4.

Japan also has a ton of manga based on BBC sherlock, and Cumberbatch himself. Getting Cumberbatch means I wouldn't be shocked to see this be the biggest overseas superhero movie for the first in a franchise.

Cumberbatch seems to be, at least from my experience, an actor that people know of, but don't know much about. Like if you just said his name, most people go "who" or "he sounds familiar, but I cannot quite place it." And then if you say "well he plays Sherlock, and he played Khan in the new Star Trek movie," then people will know who he is. He's kind of like Tom Hardy in that regard.

Yeah, he's basically in a bunch of comedies that generally appeal to American sensibilities. His biggest recognition probably has to do with him appearing with Will Farrell.

Obviously, I'm talking about American name recognition as opposed to global name recognition. I know I'm being myopic about that, but these movies are still produced by an American studio, so whether someone is "too recognizable" would be something determined by Americans.

Ghostcrow13, damn, I had no idea Parks and Rec was that bad ratings-wise (although I guess I contribute to that). That's fair enough.
