Smallville, no contest. The Smallville fight actually has some shape and story to it. The Zod fight, for all its destruction does feel a bit aimless, and the Doomsday fight is a bit too messy. Batman v Superman is too short and too one-sided (even the ultimate version) Superman comes off as a total dumbass, and Batman comes off as a homicidal ******* (and of course the "martha" thing is just ridiculous, it might have worked if it was really well staged but the way the actors did it made it totally bizarre and unbelievable, less believable than a bulletproof man who flies, I totally blame Snyder for that !).
Anyway, the Smallville fight has a lot of elements that make it work brilliantly:
- it happens during the day, so there are no issues with the frame being too dark or shadows, the action is crystal clear.
- as well as Superman, the Kryptonians attack the human soliders (which helps highlight just how powerful they are ) but creates some nice beats in the overall battle (like the " A good death is its own reward" moment).
- the fight has a narrative, Superman starts off getting his ass absolutely handed to him, but as the fight goes on he starts using his powers effectively and holds his own.
- the bad guys have personality (okay Nam EK is a B-grade Hulk) but Faora is super-badass.
She's definitely my favorite female evil henchwoman of all time.
- Superman takes a moment to save someone (the chopper gunner)....and gets nailed for it.
-Superman throws big bomb punches, the fight is a real brawl, which highlights that Supes isn't a finesse fighter (pretty much like the comics)
And it has this..... which the ultimate straight-up Superman move (grab bad guy, fly up, deliver a tremendous punch sending bad-guy earthward !).
All in all, it felt like a real comic book Superman battle brought to life. Incredibly satisfying on every level.
