Yea I mean, The Whole Nine Yards? Meet the Parents? And to top it off, Battlefield Earth?!?!!?!
Charlie's Angels, What Lies Beneath, What Women Want, The Patriot, Nurse Betty, Me Myself and Irene, Gone in 60 Seconds, Titan A.E., U-571, The Legend of Bagger Vance, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Mission Impossible II, SHAFT!?

Also, NO High Fidelity? It's better than 90% of the movies on this list.

Been meaning to ask you Sarge, Will you update your "Goes to the movies" thread anytime soon?

I voted for X-Men.

Here are my top 5 picks:

1. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
2. The Departed
3. Batman Begins
3. X2: X-Men United
4. The Dark Knight
5. X-Men

I think it could'v been nicer if everybody could have listed their 5 favorites from each year and then do the counting. I don't know what to vote, really. So many good ones.

That's probably a better idea.

1. George Washington
2. Almost Famous
3. Requiem for a Dream
4. Memento
5. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Crouching Tiger is probably my no.2.

I just think O Brother... is such a unique film. A truly great piece of cinema IMO. And all George Clooney doubters must watch this.

Meh... I may post 30-40 movies for each year but there are really only 5-10 serious competitors for each year.

What could anyone seriously see winning for 2000 other than:

Gladiator
The Patriot
Cast Away
American Beauty
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Remember the Titans
Requiem for a Dream
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
American Psycho
Memento(even though I forgot to list it)

The rest are just for filler and cheap thrills and maybe to play the role of spoiler.

It's too bad 2009 voting won't be till December. Just look at what some of the 2009 choices will be:

Avatar
2012
Watchmen
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Sherlock Holmes
The Wolfman
Inglorious Basterds
G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra
Terminator: Salvation
Star Trek
Angels & Demons
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Princehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Potter_and_the_Half-Blood_Prince_(film)

Those are going to be the blockbusters, but not the best movies of 2009.

Ummm... what about Shutter Island, The Brothers Bloom, Whatever Works, The Lovely Bones...

Geez, this blockbuster-fixation around here is getting out of hand. Especially considering that in almost any given year, the summer films are nowhere near the best.

When you are considering 2012 & GI Joe to be potential choices, its probably time to broaden your horizons.

Seriously. If anything they usually count among the worst.

2008 had truly great films like "Wendy and Lucy", "Rachel Getting Married", "Snow Angels", "Shotgun Stories", "Waltz With Bashir", "Happy-Go-Lucky", etc.

Yet in the best films of 2008 thread most peoples list consisted of TDK, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Hellboy, etc. Most people couldn't come up with a top ten because they most likely didn't see anything that wasn't a comic book film or an action blockbuster.

I've been wanting to say this on this board for a long time: go out and see more movies people! There are other movies out there besides comic book movies and summer blockbusters! And come Oscar season be wary of phony Oscar bait like "Benjamin Button", "Revolutionary Road", and "the Reader" and go see smaller, more quiet and meditative films instead. You will get a far richer movie going experience. "But those kinds of movies don't interest me!" you say. Well isn't it time you found films outside your comfort zone? And isn't it time that you discovered that there are other great directors out there besides Scorsese and Spielberg? Or that there are a wealth of great - gasp! - foreign films?

Explore new territory, don't just let your brain atrophy with blockbusters and conventional film making. Explore new horizons; try more inventive, subversive, or obscure films. Don't be content with the marketing machines being shuffled in and out of soulless multiplexes! Go support smaller theaters and smaller movies! Develop some taste for God's sake!

Or don't. Rant over.

That's a toughy. I haven't seen American Psycho and Requiem for a Dream but I heard they are awesome. I voted Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon because it's just a beautiful film with a deeply emotional story and great cinematography. Gladiator was just about the same really great movie. X-Men is one of my favorite films ever and was pretty deep and serious for a comic book movie. Almost Famous is a fun film as well.

Exactly. And the first step is to watch some films that don't necessarily appeal to you. When I was 16 I had the same "Independence Day is the greatest of all time! ROXXORS!" attitude, but then I started going to the library and renting movies I'd heard of, but that had always looked "boring". Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Raging Bull, War Of the Worlds, Forbidden Planet, The Birds, The Searchers, Midnight Cowboy, Apocalypse Now and so on and so forth. Eventually I moved into even more obscure and esotheric works but more importantly I was able to achieve a greater understanding, and love, of film. Flash only gets you so far before it wears off. The gifts of richer cinematic endeavours can last forever.

I still am constantly stunned when I read that people in their mid-20's consider junk like Transformers, Wolverine and Friday the 13th among the best they've seen that year (or, God forbid, ever!).

To be fair, maybe this guy is just interested in knowing more about films, and seeing what our opinions are? Making a poll or whatever is a good way to do that you know?

Don't rag on him too hard for his taste in movies or whatever. It's all a matter of opinion, and I get the feeling this guy wants to find out our opinions so he can learn more about movies. Nothing wrong with that.

I agree. I wasn't really intentionally ragging on him, so much as the stunted-filmgoing maturity that pervades throughout this joint.

If his goal is to learn and grow I support his intentions 100%.

This will be an awesome thread. I really think I should make sure I've seen ALL the movies in each category before voting. I think I've got a good chunk of this first year, either way this list will definitely give me a good list to use on the next film I'd like to see.
