Leaving aside the fact that you are using Wikipedia:huh:

the same site offers this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language#Geographical_distribution

Conclusion: It's not an open and shut case that Mandarin Chinese has more speakers than English.
Most widely spoken =/= highest amount of speakers.

It just means that there's a larger demographic distribution among "English speakers" (depending on your definition of literacy and fluency) than Mandarin speakers. But roughly half a billion people speak Mandarin fluently and with a high level of literacy, since China has a gigantic population. And they speak Mandarin in most of Taiwan.

And besides, that particular wikipedia article used census' for their information and cited it. So I see nothing wrong with using wikipedia in that regard.

Just to be constructive, for the 2002 poll, here would be my first draft of 39 films plus OTHER, for consideration.

1. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
2. Spider-Man
3. City of God
4. Minority Report
5. Catch Me If You Can
6. The Pianist
7. Y Tu Mama Tambien
8. The Bourne Identity
9. Talk to Her
10. Hero
11. Gangs of New York
12. 28 Days Later
13. Chicago
14. Bowling for Columbine
15. Road to Perdition
16. Adaptation
17. About Schmidt
18. Punch Drunk Love
19. 25th Hour
20. Frida
21. Whale Rider
22. In America
23. Infernal Affairs
24. Irreversible
25. Insomnia
26. Blade II
27. Red Dragon
28. 8 Mile
29. About a Boy
30. Bend it Like Beckham
31. The Count of Monte Cristo
32. Signs
33. Ice Age
34. The Hours
35. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind
36. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
37. The Ring
38. Secretary
39. Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones

Needs another cut or two at it, but I feel fairly good about the top 20 to 25. And I don't mind filling the bottom of the list with some higher profile films. I don't see the point of filling the list with things that are neither incredibly popular nor critically acclaimed. FWIW, I've seen 33 of the films on the list.

Edit: Notable films that I'm still mulling include Equilbrium, Panic Room, Lilo & Stitch, One Hour Photo, Solaris, Far From Heaven (which I really need to strongly reconsider), Narc, Bubba Ho-Tep, Phone Booth, We Were Soldiers, Dirty Pretty Things, and Spellbound.
That list looks good.

I would love to see an excellent film like Far From Heaven on the list. If we could vote for multiple films I would certainly vote for Far From Heaven.

JRPJCDJC should not be allowed to discuss movies. Ever. :o

But stardom is not necessarily an indicator of talent. Any discerning wrestling fan will tell you that while Hulk Hogan is probably the most famous wrestler of all time, he was actually awful at in-ring work.

Movies are the same way. The ability to draw money is not the same as artistic merit, which is largely what defines good filmmaking.

Dude - Hulk Hogan is the best wrestler of all time. All we saw was Hogan AFTER he paid his dues. Check out how much ass he kicked in Japan Wrestling under Antonio Inoki some time.

Pretty similar lists. What I definitely WON'T be including:
Secretary
Ice Age
Bend it Like Beckham
About a Boy
Whale Rider
Frida
Talk to Her
Y Tu Mama Tambien

You could only have 40 though. Of the one's you didn't include yet I'd definitely HAVE:
Equilbrium
Panic Room
One Hour Photo
Solaris
Bubba Ho-Tep
Phone Booth
We Were Soldiers

Pretty similar lists. I hate that people had to whine and complain about some movie, that had no real chance anyways, not being in the poll when their is clearly an OTHER option.

When you have an 'other' option, you would want it to have as little amount of votes as possible. A person still has the right to critizise a list even if his fav movie is an option of the poll. Its not some movie. If it was just one, people wouldnt have complain. Maybe a little. But half your choices are mediocre or bad, and you missed several of the best.

Hannibal...with FOTR close behind and Jeepers Creepers (one of the most underrted films ever) in third.

Zoolander

Hard to decide between that and Fellowship, which I also enjoyed quite a bit, but I just found Zoolander to be more entertaining.

Sue me if I want to be entertained when watching movies!

:facepalm

There is not a face palm big enough for this.
Allow me.

Hulkamania rules!!! The Hulkster had some good flicks.

Didn't you know? Joe Dirt helped define a generation!

Cut two of the list.

3. Minority Report

35. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind
36. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
37. The Ring
38. Bubba Ho-Tep
39. Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones

Here's what I dropped:

City of God and Whale Rider I decided belong on the 2003 list.

About a Boy, Bend it Like Beckham, Ice Age, and Secretary. About a Boy I'm still mulling over, nominated for a major screenplay award after all. Bend it Like Beckham is solid, but I don't think there would be much support here. Ice Age was obviously popular, but I don't think many considered it great. Secretary is most notable for Maggie Gyllenhal's performance and edgy subject matter, than as a whole.

Star Wars still stands out to me as something significant that probably doesn't belong on the poll.

I replaced them with Far From Heaven and the top 5 that JRPJCDJC named.

Pretty similar lists. What I definitely WON'T be including:
Secretary
Ice Age
Bend it Like Beckham
About a Boy
Whale Rider
Frida
Talk to Her
Y Tu Mama Tambien

You could only have 40 though. Of the one's you didn't include yet I'd definitely HAVE:

Pretty similar lists. I hate that people had to whine and complain about some movie, that had no real chance anyways, not being in the poll when their is clearly an OTHER option.

I hate it when people don't take well meant feedback and then whine about it when they get the same complaints. You're using OTHER as a crutch to cover up some bad choices for what's included.

I took into account some of the suggestions and made changes. Here's what I wouldn't budge on.

1. Y Tu Mama Tambien
There's no real argument that this doesn't belong on the poll. It won a ton of awards. It was on many Top 10 lists. It's by a fan favorite director. It has a high rating on IMDB. And, several people in this thread have flat out stated that they would strongly consider voting for it.

2. Frida
Again, won a ton of awards. Nominated for 6 Oscars, it won two. Not many 2002 films can claim that kind of award recognition. And, again, on many top 10 lists and it's rated highly. Heck, it made more than Joe Dirt at the box office. Considering it's about an artist, it might have some interest to Superhero Hype users as well.

3. Talk to Her
Again, won a ton of awards. Won the Best Original Screenplay Oscar and Almodovar was nominated for Best Director. Almodovar is one of the most significant directors in the world and that adds instant credibility and interest to his movies. On many top 10 lists and highly rated.

Cut two of the list.

1. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
2. Spider-Man
3. Minority Report
4. Catch Me If You Can
5. The Pianist
6. Y Tu Mama Tambien
7. The Bourne Identity
8. Talk to Her
9. Hero
10. Gangs of New York
11. 28 Days Later
12. Chicago
13. Bowling for Columbine
14. Road to Perdition
15. Adaptation
16. About Schmidt
17. Punch Drunk Love
18. 25th Hour
19. Frida
20. Far From Heaven
21. In America
22. Infernal Affairs
23. Irreversible
24. Insomnia
25. Blade II
26. Red Dragon
27. 8 Mile
28. Equilibrium
29. Panic Room
30. One Hour Photo
31. The Count of Monte Cristo
32. Signs
33. Solaris
34. The Hours
35. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind
36. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
37. The Ring
38. Bubba Ho-Tep
39. Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones

To further defiine my reasoning, and in the interests of transparency, some justification.

1 to 23 are basically the most acclaimed and discussed movies of 2002. I'd think it would be a mistake to leave any of them out. The last 16 are what I consider "bubble" movies.

24. Insomnia - Liked the film, but don't consider it special. But, it was directed by Christopher Nolan who has fans on this board.
25. Blade II - On Superherohype.com? Of course.
26. Red Dragon - Bubble choice. Good cast. Popular.
27. 8 Mile - Popular film. Good reviews. Good use of Eminem. Different subject matter than the rest of the list. In its own way it's a musical, so genre diversity.
28. Equilibrium - Christian Bale. Gun fu.
29. Panic Room - David Fincher. Relatively popular. Visually stylish.
30. One Hour Photo - Creepy thriller. Robin Williams in an atypical performance.
31. The Count of Monte Cristo - Old fashioned adventure. The type that you don't see too often these days.
32. Signs - Popular sci fi/thriller. M. Night Shamalayan while he still was well regarded.
33. Solaris - Steven Soderbergh. Brainy science fiction.
34. The Hours - Highly acclaimed. Nominated for best picture.
35. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind - Unconventional bio-pic. Well regarded. Sam Rockwell.
36. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - Highly popular. Well reviewed.
37. The Ring - Japanese horror influence hits America. Highly popular.
38. Bubba Ho-Tep - Little independent horror film that could. Bruce Campbell and Ossie Davis. A very unique tone.
39. Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones - Too popular to be ignored, whatever my thoughts on the actual quality.

Other notable movies from 2002 that weren't mentioned and I didn't really consider due to quality/interest are:
Austin Powers in Goldmember
xXx
The Transporter
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Reign of Fire
A Walk to Remember
The Sum of All Fears
Unfaithful
Death to Smoochy
Igby Goes Down
The Rules of Attraction
Changing Lanes
Nirgendwo in Afrika
The Crime of Father Amaro
The Man Without a Past

Edit: Looking around, it appears that In America should more properly be considered a 2003 film. So that would open up one more spot on the list. Any concensus out there for what needs to be added?

Well, I don't really give a **** about what you think. This is my thread so get the **** out and if you don't like then piss off - ban me.

Those movies you and dingleberry sucker have annointed as 'great cinematic achievements' are garbage that little coward losers watch while huddled in a corner. Those movies are pathetic! There's no substance to them. I'd be more amused sleeping. Those movies are so damn weak it's not even funny. You probably think Chocalat is a great movie too. Your either a female posing as a guy or a very feminine male. Either way, I don't like you and want you off my thread.

Do you have any idea how goddamn slow you have to be to follow those movies? I would have to quit every damn thing I'm doing and unlearn
everything I know to be that ****in' slow. That's why those movies suck. The masses aren't that damn slow.

Far From Heaven has more substance than 75% of the movies you consider BRIGHT or BEASTS.

What?

It's the opposite dude. With a movie like Far From Heaven or Talk To Her you have to be able to think and appreciate movies that actually have something to say. Again I'm going to ask: how old are you? You can't be older than 12.

Also, how does liking great movies make someone a coward? Do you even know what that word means?

Grow up.

Seriously. The world doesn't revolve around you. You're getting feedback that people consider your polls flawed, non-representative and in need of improvement, pointing out films they believe have been overlooked, and you attack the messengers. Roger Ebert has much less of an ego than you do about films and is much more responsive to his critics.

Yeah, the 2002 poll could consist of 1. LotR: The Two Towers, 2. Spider-Man, and 3. OTHER and it wouldn't likely change the final results. The idea is to try to be representative, and better, not to half ass it with "OTHER" as cover.

What?

It's the opposite dude. With a movie like Far From Heaven or Talk To Her you have to be able to think and appreciate movies that actually have something to say. Again I'm going to ask: how old are you? You can't be older than 12.

Why the hell am I going to think about a goddman movie!?!?! If it didn't entertain me the first time the phuck am I going to take even more time to think about it and allow it to take a piece of my mind. Piss on that, you stupid phucking pieces of dog **** want me to take time to appreciate this then pay up! Otherwise, piss off - my word IS RIGHT AND IS BEST and I know it and I can prove it.

Thinking about something just means your hiding behind it you chicken **** *****.

You only speak for your own vote, not the whole board's. Just because you dont like a movie doesnt mean the rest of us feels the same. You're quite an ego.

Yeah, you're 12.

Or an insane, emotionally stunted 40 year old.

Im pretty sure he's trolling. I wasnt sure at first, but now its quite obvious.

Yeah, you're 12.

No.

I just know that anyone who likes movies like that isn't worth a bottle of my piss and it's irritating to listen to them spout off like they are.

There you go again, hiding behind a something someone else told you to hide behind. It's a losing strategy.
