Best / Worst of 2009

(Sigh)

Do we really have to be so techinical about all of this? Can't we just agree that Michael Bay sucks, regardless of whether or not he's actually making an effort or not?

Suit yourself. I was kind of 50/50 on him, but I don't know that I'll ever sit through one of his movies again after watching Transformers 2. I might give the inevitable third installment a shot IF reviews say that the script is much better than the last one. But that's a big if, since you can't always trust critics.

He does listen. People wanted more bots...he gave them. They wanted more humor...he gave it. But thats not what people wanted....?

I love on the commentary how he talked about shooting in Egypt and he had to yell at everyone to get to work because they kept taking pictures of the sunset

Yea people wanted more humour...

But I'm pretty sure not humour that makes Rodney Dangerfield look tasteful...

Bay has an ego the size of Manhattan. Even though he delivered all on the "more [insert noun]" for TF-2, the way he did it was horrendously bad and overblown. Pearl Harbor had more subtlety than TF-2 did.

And I don't like the way he shoots things. Lots of closeups, fast-cut editing that barely tells the viewer what's happening... et al. And don't get me started on his trademark 360 camera spin on main characters.

Yeah, I think that's the thing. People wanted more bots and he delivered... unfortunately, none of the new ones (in my opinion) were cool or likeable as characters. The only bot I cared about in the movie was Optimus again, and he was absent throughout most of it.

And the humor... I only want more humor if it's actually funny. I seriously don't think I laughed once in that whole movie. The stoner scene with the mother? Horrible. The rooomate? Unbearable. The Twins? Stab me in the face with a pitchfork.

Don't forget the giant Decepticon with the wrecking ball testicles! That was so hilarious!

I remember sitting in that theater when I saw that and thinking to myself how wrong it was for young kids to watch that movie. Granted, that brand of humor isn't "adult" either, but the point is, parents took their children to see that movie and exposed them to some serious trash.

I'm not an advocate for censorship in the least. But I do think that when you make a movie that you KNOW FOR A FACT is going to draw a young audience, you have a resposibility to avoid showing them a thinly veiled image of a nutsack.

who doesn't like dick jokes??

anyway, on to other conversation....so Brad Pitt had another good film out with Inglorious Basterds, where does he rank in the cinematic pantheon right now?

I laughed. I love sophmoric humor. Why? Because. There shouldnt be a humor age cut off. Funny is funny. Balls are funny. Farts are funny. So Bay is the winnah,

I still think people underrate Pitt. Same with guys like Clooney. They look good, are bonafide A List. People focus on that "celebrity" ******** more than their actual abilities.

See I think Pitt is a character actor trapped in a leading mans body. The guys a chameleon.

I see it this way...you could have a room full of the stuffiest, crustiest crumudgedons....put 2 people in front of them and have one kick the other in the nuts....people are laughing

Trust me I love stupid humour too. Two of my favourite comedy films are Van Wilder and Animal House. You can't get more trashy humour than that. But the humour in TF2 just didn't make me laugh, it made me roll my eyes.

my feelings exactly...the man has been a part of so many fantastic films, could he be considered this eras Robert Redford, or does that go to George Clooney?

Not sure, but I love Pitt and he's played some of my all time favorite characters onscreen. Aldo Raine was another awesome performance.

I always find it funny how many fanboys there are out there who hate the guy even though he's created some of the most popular characters in film-nerd culture. Tyler Durden, Mickey (from Snatch) and now Aldo Raine will live on forever in film geek history.

Oh yeah. I find people getting kicked in the nuts hilarious. Even more funny, they get hit in the balls, which causes them to fart, which then causes them to poop themselves.

Ok. But I laughed. I'm not debating on weather TF2 is a good movie or not....heh.
