Marilyn Monroe. She was the first woman on Playboy and didn't have a problem of possible scrutiny for being an A-Class star and appearing nude at the time. She was proud of her body and embraced her sexuality by sharing it with others. More by sharing her nudity with others because she saw nothing to be ashamed of. Now I will accredit Betty with the whole bondage thing since that was mostly a Burlesque thing and she introduced it into the mainstream into the U.S.

Monroe was very mainstream, though. Page was considered subversive and for a long while possessing her films and photos was a crime. All that she did actually brought about changes to the legal standpoint on the types of films and photos that could be possessed, despite their pornographic content. Those legal changes set the stage for the modern pornography industry as we know it today. Don't get me wrong, Monroe did her fair share of shaping public opinion on sexuality, but I think she had more of an impact on what was considered the standard of beauty rather than what was the standard of sexuality.

Why were some of her photos and films illegal? What was in them that was illegal?

Primarily because of their content. Not just because of the nudity (actually, there wasn't that much in much of Irving Klaw's work) and suggestive clothing, but because of the bondage, spanking and girl-on-girl activities that Klaw was fond of presenting. It got to a point where the government started going after Klaw and anyone else who distributed his materials through the U.S. Postal Service, persecuting them for breaking indecency and pornography laws (which were MUCH more stringent than they are today). Page and the Klaws really challenged all of that and Page got so famous, and her pictures and movies so sought after, that there was no way for the government to really go after everyone who had pics or movies of her.

I am sorry Bision but if not for Bettie Page you more then likely would not have a Playboy or a Marilyn Monroe. As I said before Bettie really opened up the doors for many things. Hell it was said during WWII more guys had her as a pin-Up then they did Monroe. Also a side note Bettie also did Playboy.

This is something I've always wondered, why do a lot of goth chicks love Bettie Page so much?

For those of you who know the history of her this is a shocker seeing how she would never take a picture since she dropped out of the public eye.
