Beware the Batman

Didn't seem like he changed his voice for Bruce Wayne compared to Batman though.

Maybe not. But there could be far worse problems with the show.

I'm gonna reserve judgment while I get used to the animation style, not to mention the choice of villain(s) didn't appeal to me at all, I also prefer a more traditional Alfred.

I think the goal is to show off things that have never been done before. New alfred, new sidekick, new villains.

Well said.

We have already had one magnificent animated series show the traditional rogues' gallery, Alfred, Batman, storylines, and sidekicks. The point of the program is to not carbon copy TAS, but to try something different. I like what I have seen---if only it would hit digital retailers.

I will give the show a chance but I'm not too fond of the concept and 3D animation at first glance. My opinion could change after I see it though.

I know this is only a dream at the moment but what I've been pitching for years is a PG-13 Batman animated series that airs on a network like Adult Swim or NBC. As dark and mature as Batman TAS was, it still had a few restrictions working against it. A PG-13 series would have no restrictions whatsoever other than the amount of swearing and nudity (which are not needed in the comics to begin with). It would be cool to see them use characters like Mr. Zsasz and such.

I dont mind the CGI. Never really have. I love the Nickelodeon TMNT. And the animation in that is pretty much identical to BtB.

I'm excited for episode 2.

Good to have some hope in a world where they say action cartoons are dying and every great cartoon ends up canceled (Spectacular Spider-Man, Clone Wars, Tron: Uprising, Green Lantern, etc.)

I'd say Spidey and Clone Wars were in weird situations though due to company changes and all that. They both have/will have new shows now.

Stuff like Uprising, GL, Thundercats, etc. have problems of being action shows coupled with having little to no initial fanbase as far as kids go.

This show has a good chance of living due to being Batman-related.

Yeah, with so many Batman products out there, they've gone for something different. So good on them in that regard. This version of Alfred isn't my ideal interpretation but I'll get used to it. I think he'll become closer to the one we all know as things go on.

wow well the first episode was a mixed bag but overall nice start, I like that Batman is starting out and we see him making mistakes but over the course of the series he'll improve. The new bad guys Pym & Toad are interesting new characters and so far their ok. I hope to see the original Batman rouge gallery of villains in the episodes to come. The art and animation is cool, Batman's new voice actor is very different but a cool new addition I hope that he creates a different voice as Bruce Wayne in public to make a clear distinction. Love the design of Wayne Manor, the batcave, the batmoblie and the suit. Gordon cameo nice...

Now I gotta say the revamp on Alfred is a lot to take in, first off he doesn't look old and he bald with a massive body of muscle I was completely caught of guard by that and it's going to take some time to get use too. But otherwise I'd say good first start.

Liked it well enough, cant stand these villians though.

Maybe the fact that they've never been used before is cause they're ****ing stupid lol

Well Pyg was far and away from his comic book counterpart. But decently ported to something children can handle without having nightmares.

I agree. Even after episode one he's already got a limp. He won't be in the field any longer that's for sure.

Like Green Lantern TAS, I don't think the CG looks good here. Designs and art style just look jarring and weird to me. I just can't get a handle on the way Batman looks.

its nitpicking i know but batman's lips are still weird to me
maybe because in animation he's always had a line for a mouth but yea haha

I liked this first episode. New take on Alfred is ok, a more modern idea than the simple gentleman butler. The villains were good. Liked the CGI animation. Suit could be more traditional. Nice universe-building (Gordon, Gotham Gazette). Overall a good effort.

But meh... Katana, hate her. But perhaps this version will be better. Couldn't get used to Batman's voice yet. Looking forward to the next episode!

*** 1/2 / *****

I missed one moment... how exactly did Batman find the hideout?

I'm not liking the CG. Batman's design is the worst of the series so far, with everyone else being more palatable. The story didn't really grab me and the mystery didn't really seem to be all that big a mystery in terms of how hard it was to find the clues. Not liking the voices, either.

I'll give it another couple episodes, but overall the show rates a meh for me.

I've been very intrigued with this show since it's announcement and certainly an avid supporter as news and images began to trickle out. I have to say, I was not dissapointed.

Batman: The Animated Series is the definitive versions of these characters and it'll always be that way for me... so with Batman cartoons, I'm always looking for something different and not simply a watered down version of B:TAS. THIS is a stark departure and it will take some getting used to, but it's brave and the creators deserve kudos.

The first thing I noticed was the pace and tone. It was very slow, deliberate and methodical, which is something of a surprise in modern kid's animation. It was a simple story with unknown villians and an unrefined Batman, The mystery was mundane, but sometimes mundane can be a good thing and it's was great for easing us into the pilot. Dialogue was crisp and in character as well as being quite witty at times.

The animation really didn't bother me. The background themselves look lovely but yes, they also look starkly empty. There is no life whatsoever about this Gotham City and it's something they need to correct as the show progresses. I loved the designs (Alfred will take some time to adjust to), especially Batman and everything popped the way it was supposed to , with fluid and dynamic movement.

The voice actors all really impressed me. Ruivivar could become quite a powerhouse Batman - He's no Kevin Conroy but it'll be interesting to see where he lands on my list of Batman Voice actors. Jeff Bennett (Simon Stagg) sounded a little too much like his Joker from The Brave and the Bold which was kind of distracting.

The music was also effectively mooddy and creepy (Darn shame they trimmed the opening).

It's both exciting and challenging to get used to such drastic changes in the Batman mythology... but keep up this level of quality and it'll be a breeze.

3.5/5 - An excellent start.

It was definitely good! I thought it would've been terrible after the loss of Young Justice, and campy kid friendly villains however I was proven wrong.

I don't mean to think too far ahead or set up any expectations but with the presence of a one Michael Holt and the name "Allen" pop up in connection to an area in Keystone City=larger DC Universe where this Batman isn't the only hero?

Do you think they'll probably do something like what they did in the last season of "The Batman" animated series where he teamed up with a bunch of different heroes leading to the Justice League formation? I wouldn't want an overkill of those type of episodes, I mean we had those episodes and an entire series of that, just a major story arc over a few episodes would be nice though. Given the animation style it looks like it could very well be in the same universe as the deceased GL series yes?

Wanted to throw this quote from executive producer Glen Murakami in here:
Every show I’ve ever worked on, whenever we start the show, it’s always the same thing. Where everyone complains and says that they’re going to hate the show and then, after the shows been on or when the show ends they always ask the same question “Well why did they cancel it? Why did they get rid of it? We thought it was so great."

So that’s the only thing that I can kind of remind everybody is like, well, when Teen Titans started everyone said they hated it. When we did Batman Beyond everyone said that they hated it, you know? When we did the revamp on Batman, everyone said that they hated it. So, every single time it sounds like, whenever we start something, everyone complains about it and tells us that it’s going to be terrible and it’s not going to be very good.

Same crap seems to happen for every iteration of any Batman or TMNT cartoon. People are so afraid that they won't live up to these 20-30 year old shows and they can't even fathom that a new and entertaining version can come out. It's annoying.
