Lex shows Clark this symbol.

http://www.kryptonsite.com/ about halfway down the main page 'trailer screen caps'

You do understand that the Superman symbol has been around long before SR don't you ? That's actually a more classic S symbol...

maybe this will help make things a little clearer (well it did in my mind anyway)..

SR \S/ skewed to same level as the \S/ in Lex's hand and layed over the top:

Yes, it's definitely the Returns version of the \S/ shield.

agreed, its the returns symbol. Note the top of the S -- from what I've seen and noticed, that's very unique to the Returns \S/

That's cool... i might start watching. Probably not though.

Now we know that the photo that makes it look like the Returns symbol is a manip. The symbol in Smallville was NOT the SR symbol.

Lex doesn't show it to Clark.
Clark get's it in the Phantom Zone and uses it against Lex/Zod when he takes his hand after kneeling. The images your seeing are after Clark "hands" it to Lex/Zod and he opens his hand to see what Clark placed there.

Sure about that? Here's a screencap from the episode:

Here's pwhitrow's reconfiguring of the symbol:

Looks a lot like the SR shield to me.

That is the Superman Returns \S/. Well, I guess we will be seeing that symbol for a while.

Yeah, I'm sure. They showed the symbol pretty clear. It looks pretty obvious that it's a manipulation in both photo 2 and 3.

You can manipulate any photo to try and prove it, but in the show, the logo was clearly flat.

Doesnt look exactly like the SR symbol but yea it's some what like it since their both the symbol for \s/uperman!
This one looks more like the Donner/Reeve symbol then the SR one.... To me anyway.

That is exactly what I thought. With the Terrance Stamp voiceover and all the other Donnerverse references (kneel before Zod) it just makes more sense that it is a Donner/Reeve symbol and not a SR symbol. Plus, the only way to make it look like a SR symbol is for someone to manipulate it that way.

Oh yeah!! That symbol in Smallville looks JUST LIKE the Reeve symbol and nothing like the SR symbol.. I mean it has no straight lines, curves or angles that match up exactly with the SR symbol or anything, and it's not like the only thing missing to complete it is the 3D curve in the middle. How can you not see this?

It's not the exact same shield folks.

The SR shield is more flatter overall (width greater than height), and it has rounded sides, most notably at the top...

The SV shield is taller and has flat sides...

Both are raised emblems and have the same tail on the S, but the SR shield has an additional raised line that runs laterally down the body of the letter.

They're NOT the same.

I think we all realize they aren't exact. But there are other similarities. The tail is the same, and so is the check mark shaped top. They're also both thinner than the standard comic \S/.

If the Superman Returns \S/ were totally 2d, without that ridge that runs along the middle, they'd be almost exactly the same.

Ok now I see it, Thanks PAT .

Smallville loosely follows the same continuity as Superman The movie and Superman Returns. And that is NOT the SR symbol. It is the plain ol' comic book \S/.

Don't know if this is the right thread for it, but since the topic of the \S/ is being debated. What also are anyones theroies as to why it is an English S when Smallville has already established a figure 8 symbol in previous episodes?

And just my two cents, I think it closely resembles the SR sheild but it's slightly different (like it's there take on it)

The Superman emblem in "Smallville" is [The House Of EL] Symbol like it was in Mark Waid "Superman : Birthright " mini-series comics . :super:

The \8/ is the mark of Kal-EL's ancestors .

I don't follow kal-el 8 what you are trying to tell me. I have watched Smallville since season one and read the comics since I was a kid.

I know in Birthright it was a symbol of his family which became a symbol for all of Krypton. But the Kryptonian language that Smallville is using shows our S being an \8/. And an \8/ was burned into Clark's chest while he was Kal. So I was trying to figure out why it would be an \8/ in the Kryptonian alphabet but an \S/ on the necklace and gateway in the PZ

I can't remember but I think at one point they explained that the \8/ was a symbol for air or something, and that tatoo that Lana had on her back stood for water. I don't know now, have to go back and rewatch some of my DVDs. It looked like they were trying to tie some things together and then just dropped that story line.

BTW--not trying to be a jerk. Just wanted to clarify what you were telling me.

Are you guys talking about these?

These are the various "Kryptonese" :) symbols or characters.

Later.

It's the same emblem as the SR shield without the raised look. I think it's pretty cool.

A Superman Returns symbol without the raised look is basically the Donner symbol.

It's a bit more touched up than Donner's. I said it's a combo of George Reeves' and Donner's.
