6.12 Labyrinth - Discussion Thread (Spoilers)

I'm really not getting the impression that it was Shelby barking every so often, I think it was the rumble of the phantom. How would Clark not realize that it was the dog if he had clear recollection that he was just in the barn with the dog.

Someone needs to get a Q&A with the writing duo so when can get some of those subtleties straight.

I didn't even notice that constant hum the first time I watched it, but I sure did the second time. That might get annoying on even more viewings.

I'd go 5/5 on this one, no points I wanted to fast forward through on this one.

It was both shelby and the phantom.

When you watch again, you'll notice that the phantom noise would play whenever Lana or the doctor (or anyone else who was trying to convince Clark to take the treatment or be good) was around. Clark would hear the bark whenever he had reason to question the reality of where he was....

It was very interesting, I hope this episode gets commentary. I would love to hear them explain the extra subtlties I may have missed, but I've seen it like six times now. The review is just not getting written because I'm enjoying watching the episode too much to really watch it with a more discerning eye....

Besides, Craig is out of town until Thursday so I think I've got a few days to work on it.. ;)

I really loved this episode. I have to agree with Pat, this was probably Tom Welling's all time best performance in the show (ranks way up there with Transference, Splinter, Red or Vengeance and others). It was like Clark's version of "Shattered".
I rank this only below "Zod". Phil Morris was great as MMH and we will see more of him and he will tell Clark that he has been watching him from the beginning. Love the scene with fire as well and the eyes. I do agree they could have probably done more but I was satisfied with what they did do. And the last scene was really sweet with Lana, and wasn't filled with angst at all even though he must've been suffering to see her with Lex.
For those who haven't seen the episode yet here it is:

Next week's Crimson should be great and fun as well !

I agree. This is the kind of ep that's ideal for commentary.

About the noise, I think it was just Shelby actually. I noticed the noise would occur periodically throughout the ep, and would start as this low hum and quickly turn into a muffled barking sound. I mean, on second viewing, it really did sound right that the sound was like a morphed, muffled, bass-y barking noise. And that it ocurred systematically and periodically, was the very fact of Shelby (bless him) constantly barking, trying to help get Clark out of that state and wake up. Except, that Clark wasn't paying any attention to it, until finally at the end, when the circumstances and situation forced him to take notice, and the sound literally broke the barrier, in a way, and got Clark out of the AU stupor.

Or that's what I made of it anyways! Lol.

I feel like I should love this epsiode but there's just something off about it. Wellings great in it, as is Rosenbaum although he has like only two scenes, the wholse scene where they explained where Clark got his fantasies from I liked as well.

But I just felt like they had Clark act too crazy. He asks questions like "Is Lex behind it? Your in on it too aren't you?" and then he becomes kinda of violent. Its obvious this is down to desperation on his part but I just don't see Clark acting that way, I thought he would have kept it together more. I think a good way to have made it more realistic would have been for Clark to have flashes of events happening in different ways, like on the bridge with Lex have him see Lex crashing inter cut with what actually happened.

Really liked Lana here, she had her charm of the first few seasons back

BTW loved the generic escape, are all mental institutions that easy to get out of?.

Can anyone hook me up with the song that is played at the end of the episode?

No. "Yesterday" by Hefshill

Get it...Puff the Magic Dragon....puffing the magic dragon....as in Clark is on drugs...while dreaming crazy stuff......I thought it was funny.:csad: :O

I just read your review over at Ksite Triplet. That was wonderful. I love the detail you went into when you explained what was happening in Clark's alternate reality. You made me want to go and rewatch it right now. :yay:

Good job!

Such a good episode. It didn't wear a bit on each viewing...

Such a beautiful review Triplet. Probably my favourites from the ones you written so far. This was a great episode indeed.

Aw...

*blush*

Thanks.

I have to agree - that's one of your very best reviews. The honesty about how much you truly loved this episode, backed up with really strong reasons is very endearing.

I give your review a 5/5. :D

LOL!

:D

Thanks!

*sigh* Do I have to keep all the egos in check here?

Triplet, that was the worst review in the history of reviews. I give it a 1/5 and a wet fish for you. :cmad: :p

I loved your review, Triplet. To me, it's the best one you've written so far. And I'm glad because this great episode deserved a great review. :yay:

Triplet, very enjoyable review on Ksite, and great analysis of Clark's dilemma. I hadn't consciously thought of all the ways he was being torn between responsibilities and possibilities (possibly because I, too, tend to get distracted watching this episode :cwink: ), but you did a wonderful job of putting them into words. You didn't mention the sound/score. The humming (was that cellos?) and often unusual choice of scoring I found to be very effective in creating an eerie, unreal yet threatening atmosphere, and the barking (once I knew to listen for it) was ingeniously yet believably woven into the background. Does that boost your grade to a 5++?

Actually, I forgot the mention the score... dammit.

Oh, well.

Yeah, I thought it was brilliant.... I sorta referred to it, I guess, because originally I thought the sounds of the phantom and the barking seemed to be part of the score, so the constant thrum of the cello (or whatever) made that blend into the background. It was there and yet it wasn't...

How awesome was that? I loved it...

What a beautiful episode from everyone, Tom, the writers, director on down...

Tom was outstandingly gorgeous in Labyrinth. It's not like he's ever been ugly or anything, but he was especially beautiful in this episode. Maybe it was the longer hair or the paler make-up or the non-Clark-like colors he wore or the fact that he looked taller than normal

He's getting soft aka losing muscle, so it should make him look lankier.

I think he stopped lifting.

Prob just plays sports for fun now or something to stay active.

Tom seems to go through phases. I wonder if they pack bulk on him for a certain portion of the season, and then get him cut for the final few episodes of each season. If you look at last season, look at him in Aqua vs Mercy last year, it's night and day
