Birds of Prey Birds of Prey General Discussion and Speculation

My belated thoughts on seeing Birds of Prey (twice now).

This is an excellent superhero movie and if we don't see another solo adventure with Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn it'd be a damn shame. She is the first performer since Arlene Sorkin who I think has made the character compelling. She's not quite TAS Harley (obviously) but she has the same spirit and infectious glee. And after this movie she owns the role like Hugh Jackman owns Wolverine or Ryan Reynolds owns Deadpool.

The movie itself is very enjoyable. The first time I thought it was too manic, but like a lot of the '90s movies it emulates, it plays better the more you've seen it (though it's closer to the style over substance of Guy Ritchie than the Tarantino it aspires to be). It's not great, but it feels like a real movie with a real skewed perspective. More please with Poison Ivy, even if it's on HBO Max.

(I'm aware that it opened very low, but it had a low drop this weekend, and disappointing or not, it's the best superhero movie I've seen since Black Panther).

It only had a low drop this weekend because it was a holiday weekend, though.

Let's say it didn't tank like Charlie's Angels, 8.3M OW with a 61% 2nd weekend drop for a 17.8M finish DOM (WW 70M)

Okay, rewatched Suicide Squad. Good lord, no wonder why there was no hype for this movie. Calling Harley the best part of that movie is hardly a complement. So, so, so much better in this movie...

After rewatching this and then seeing them set pics from SS2, it is fun to see how HQ/Margot just keeps going from one set to another. Hopefully, we see her with Ivy and maybe, Batgirl and of course the rest of the Bop , one day.

Body double for Mr. J in BoP ?

Margot on the set of "The Suicide Squad", those who were hoping that this movie is the reboot of earlier movie by same name (David Ayer's SS) are wrong, as Harley is still having the tattoos, so this follows the earlier movie but is going to tell it's own different story.

Also, some people are asking why Harley's hair looks long in this as she had shorter heir in Birds of Prey, the answer could be that BoP was set few months after the events of the first Suicide Squad movie and this movie is set a few years after the events in BoP. (As Margot said in one of the interviews she gave while promoting BoP, all three movies take place at different points of time in Harley's life.)

Or she just ate a lot of seaweed in prison to fast track her hair

Am I the only one who found the torture of the crime family scene to be too much? Especially given what happened to the girl?

That took me out of the movie. (I know that I can be a huge wimp, but it’s hard for me not to empathize)

That was the most "Black Mask" moment of the entire movie, imo. His sadism is what made him memorable for me in Brubaker's Catwoman. So in that sense, I'm glad that moment was in the movie. But yeah, I found it hard to watch. Black Mask should be a hard villain to watch, and honestly, they didn't actually show much. The worst of it was left to our imaginations.

Yeah. I guess that at least he didn’t feed anyone their husbands eyeballs

Okay came here after a long time to post my opinion about recent DC Films including Birds of prey

First of All taking the DC lore into consideration this Birds of prey film felt like a good DC film while missing in a couple of departments.
I mean I'm a lifelong DC fan and but Black Canary, Poison ivy, Zatanna, Catwoman, Cassandra cain are Icons and if you ever do a movie with them you make sure they get introduced to the audience ( be them comic fans or audience not familiar with the characters ) in a great way or rather not do that film. Apart from margot and ewan every other lead felt charisma-void or maybe I'm not familiar with their acting range and they focused more on harley.
I heard somewhere that they were courting lady gaga for black canary but that didn't happen due to budget issues. If you want to make a good movie at least cast good actors ( imo acting comes first cape**** comes second ). Also film did not felt anti-men which I think is being blown out of proportion, you can have film that caters more to females and less to males as long as you don't trash the gender and vice versa but DC as brand should always capture the middle ground and that's where the money is.
Overall I enjoyed the movie but warners need to realise that DC which is their most powerful brand must be handled with extreme care

Doesn't throwing in the Joker kind of tip the scales though? That's like saying the first 5 MCU movies averaged $459M WW, but if you add Avengers it jumps to $635M.

Now people will complain Academy is promoting DC movies again. :o
