The event films are what drives the genre at the moment. On the other hand audiences are starting to get a stronger taste for the smaller scale, more intimate portraits of these characters. Birds of Prey would have worked much better as Harley striking out on her own. As a film and from a marketing perspective. Still, even with it missing the mark at the box office, it's still a great strategy Warner has for using these films to serve a segment of the fandom (and GA) that feels disconnected from the event films, or misses those story beats they get from the comics. As long as they keep the budgets controlled DC will be more then OK. Not every comic property needs to set the world on fire and be mega hits (Nor should they I'd argue.)
And with WW and Batman on the horizon, they've still got plenty of event films in the mix.
It's just sad that comic book fans instead of watching the movie just decide to join hate-bandwagon. People refused to watch this movie, one of the reasons why it under-performed, not because it was a bad movie. The whole Sonic fans Vs BoP fans was a stupid thing, as both movies were targeting different demographics.
I'm putting all those who liked the above post on ignore, dunno how Mods here permit such hate posts, going to report this.
Well, yeah. The post looked more dramatic than intended, so I edited it, still that Sonic Vs BoP was in poor taste, I've already reported it.

Edit.
