i heard some where that they were gonna skip the black freighter entirely, but i really think it helps the plot along, and if not it would be really awesome if someone was too make it into a short film and put it on the watchmen DVD or something of that sort

I am among those who believes its a waste of money if spent on a film. The story adds to the comic, however it has no purpose being shot.

I am even against it as a DVD feature, simply because IMO its wasted budget.

itd be cool if snyder made it on his own money, but i still think it would be a great deleted scene on like a directors cut

I would much rather see the pages of "Behind The Hood" brought to life over The Back Freighter.

IMO the Behind The Hood tidbits were among the best parts of the novel as a whole.

Although it'd make for a great DVD extra or deleted scene, it isn't really necessary. It's mainly there to foreshadow what happens with Veidt but there would be more efficient ways to do it on screen. Besides, how could it even be implemented? It's pages of a comic book. That works in the Watchmen comic but on screen, it'd be very hard to do

Is this the story Benard is reading next to the other Bernard at the news stand about the stranded pirate guy trying to get back? Sorry, haven't read it in a while. I'll dig it up and start it again.

I think it would essentially be live action with sort of strange coloration, and whenever he stops reading, it turns into a comic book panel. But yeah, even so it'd be hard.

Just a thought.

Since The Black Freighter segments are designed to mirror Veidt's own journey, as he eventually becomes the very horror he originally set out to defeat so resulting in his descent into his own private damnation (he even tells Dr Manhattan he's been dreaming of swimming towards a hideous..., just like The Mariner character at the conclusion of the pirate comic)...

...and if Snyder is, in all likelihood, gonnna kill off Veidt so he won't be around to suffer that personal damnation - then just what becomes the point of including The Black Freighter subtext in the film?

I think it would be awesome if they handed the "Behind the Hood" out when you purchased a ticket as like a pamphlet. i feel like it is too lengthy too be put into the movie and works better as a page of script. it would be equally cool for it to be a special feature as well. btw i loved behind the hood but i think The Black Freighter added more to the plot then "Behind the Hood"

sorry freudian slip i guess, i recently saw behind the mask, rise of leslie vernon, i apologize

I think it should left though I think people (who haven't read the book) seeing the movie wouldn't get it.

It shouldn't be shown it just wouldn't work as a separate story, in the book it breaks up the chapters you cant do that on film. It should be told as a story by one of the charaters to Veidt at the end to make him see sense...as that is what the point of the BF is.
Try too hard to do the right thing and you become blind to everything else around you.

LEONIDAS RIDES THE BLACK FREIGHTER

I just came from a whirlwind one on one with Watchmen director Zack Snyder here at Comic Con, and while he wouldn’t confirm or deny it, it was obvious that he’s going to cast Gerard Butler as the desperate castaway in The Tales of the Black Freighter, the pirate comic within Watchmen.

Maybe.

That maybe doesn’t rest on Butler or Snyder, but rather on Warner Bros, who still have not committed the money needed to shoot the sequences, which would be included on the DVD. Zack did confirm that if he got the money he would do the Black Freighter in full on, stylized 300 fashion.

As far as I’m concerned, Warner Bros has to give him the money. I don’t think a Watchmen movie needs The Tales of the Black Freighter, but as a supplement, it’s going to be a ton of fun, and Butler is perfect for the role. Are you listening Warner Bros?

Look for my full (and short) one on one with Snyder to run soon.

Pretty much what we've been expecting. I'm kindof hoping its filmed and just put in the dvd. I'm Zack can make a visually enthralling short out of it.

A friend at Warner today tells me that “Watchmen” fans are in for a surprise come the DVD : The studio is so pleased with what they’ve seen of the movie that they’ve coughed up some more money for the director to shoot the special ‘Tales of the Black Freighter’ for the disc. This is something fans have been hankering for for eons… and now they’ve got their wish.

Damn, I'm starting to get really excited for this flick... I want some character pics.... fast!

Great news. A supplement to the DVD is the best solution. Awesome.

I'm all for Gerald Butler playing the main dude in THE BLACK FREIGHTER, but my question now is this:

Should THE BLACK FREIGHTER be animated or be live-action, since it is a kid reading a comic book?

Snyder said he'd do it 300-style, so it'll look like a comic book but still have live-action elements.

As far as whether it should be filmed or not, it depends how well it works. I'll be looking forward to seeing it. It could really add a nice texture to the film, though if Adrian ends up dying, there's ultimately no point in it being there.
