People have been doing tattoos, piercings, and many other more extreme forms of modification for years. Many of them were considered very beautiful. In many societies, those without them were considered unattractive. It's very subjective, and not a modern change.

umm...there's way more bizarre stuff going on in this world than this...and while it, to me and most, is quite disgusting...a very small minority of self-mutilating weirdos doesn't show an accurate depiction of the entire world.

that's the most random thing i've ever seen.

i once saw a guy with a bunch of ball bearings (or whatever) under his head-skin, like a fleshy mohawk, and then he tried to "punk" me for staring at him... there was a small group of people around us, and i just said, as politely as i could "so, um... you didn't do that to get attention, then?"

As someone with piercings and tattoos, I'll never judge what anyone else might want to do with their bodies. It's their body. If they want to do something with it that suits their personal aesthetic tastes then I fully support their right to do that, as long as that's why they are doing it and not because they're trying to be trendy or be something they think others might think they should be. That said, I think many people don't really think completely through some of the things that they do to their bodies in terms of long term implications. Some of these modifications are full on permanent or present some extreme difficulty in reverting back from them, most likely leaving some sort of scarring or other unattractive tell-tale signs of their previous modification. Will she like having that thing under her skin when she's 65 years old? Hard to say, but I'm willing to bet probably not. But, it's her decision and if it's beautiful to her then that's all that really matters as far as I'm concerned.

exactly... i've had plenty of peircings that i've taken out that've healed, and i've gotten more than a few (coverable) tattoos. but i have one tattoo on my wrist that is only coverable with a long sleeve that i already regret getting. so, how are these people with holes in their face and neck and tattoos on their eyeballs and whatever else going to feel in 5 years?

And that's exactly the kind of ramifications people need to take into consideration when they're contemplating body modifications. It could impact their ability to gain lucrative employment. My ink is easily covered and the majority of people have no idea it's there, as are most of my piercings with the exception of my earrings, which are only 14g and relatively innoccuous and fairly common even with older guys these days. But I work in a corporate environment and wouldn't want to damage my standings in the office by going with some of the more extreme mods that people are doing. And besides, those more extreme mods don't really suit me as a person, anyway and don't appeal to me for my own body.

As is the case with most augmentation, people jump to conclusions, knowing what the hell they are talking about. Yes, it is in the form of brass knuckles. Is it real brass knuckles? Hell no. I forget where I read it, its just a silicone mold in the form of guess what? Brass knuckles.. I really don't have a problem with any of this stuff. I would suggest few of these folks are working in the corporate or 'mainstream' world, but there are places for them (although that girl with the implant would just have to wear a buttoned-up shirt and she'd be fine).

I find it incredibly interesting, but maybe that's my anthropological background/training. Then again, maybe it was my natural curiosity about human behavior/culture that led me to anthropology. Kind of a chicken/egg thing, I guess. Anyway, I wouldn't go for much of it personally, but I would love to talk to any of them about their decisions and ideas of beauty/image/etc.

Plus, my officemate is totally grossed out by this stuff (he's got a needle phobia besides) so that makes it even more fun for me.
