IGN Dents Bat-Rumors
We investigate the Two-Face casting buzz.

October 6, 2006 - IGN has been playing detective again. We've been busy looking into the rumors about who might play Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight now that director Christopher Nolan confirmed for IGN that the man who would be Two-Face is definitely in the sequel to Batman Begins. The rumor mill has long suggested that there would be major casting news on The Dark Knight around the time that Nolan's The Prestige debuts Oct. 20.
Two actors in particular have been said to be the frontrunners for the part during the last few weeks: Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Phillippe. Liev Schreiber and Guy Pearce have also been mentioned but Gyllenhaal and Phillippe are the most hotly rumored contenders.
After getting firm and official denials from both CAA and his reps at Management 360, IGN can shoot down the Gyllenhaal rumor. Gyllenhaal's rep even quipped, "No, the other guy from Brokeback Mountain is in it if you haven't heard." That's a reference to Heath Ledger being cast as The Joker.
CAA also shot down the recently resurrected rumor that Guy Pearce was up for the role. Schreiber's reps and publicist, however, had not called back by publishing time.
Is this one of the faces of Harvey Dent?
The most curious responses came from Phillippe's camp. His management, The Schiff Company, had no comment. The actor's lawyer, David Weber, advised IGN that he didn't know the answer. Warner Bros. reps did not return calls for comment.
Phillippe's agency, UTA, initially insisted that, "We cannot comment on that." But during a follow-up call, a UTA agent advised IGN, "We've not been contacted by anyone. There's not a script yet. ... There's no story here."
Phillippe's publicist, Nanci Ryder, told us flatly, "No, he's not in it. No Batman. Official denial."
While there's always the chance that we could be getting our leg pulled by reps Batman-on-Film.com reports that Dent has indeed been cast and that an announcement will be made shortly in the trades there's also the possibility that the actor playing Dent will be someone who, like Ledger, has not even been mentioned for the role prior to an announcement.
Finally, CAA also advised IGN that, as far as Katie Holmes reprising her role as Rachel Dawes is concerned, "nothing's happening right now" because the script's not in, a fact that Nolan confirmed this week. That's not to say Holmes will or will not be in it; there's simply no movement on that front right now.
