Watching Bloomberg they're saying the motivation for targeting the U.S. as opposed to Russia is because some of the guys they supported were in Iraq and Afghanistan fighting with them against our forces or something. Speculation.

According to CNN, they're saying the FBI took 3 people in for questioning. I believe they're from the college the suspect went to.
