SIAT's funkalicious week of comics! 7-6-06, Because of Independence Day. GRRR! I wasn't off work for Independence Day and neither should anybody else! GRR!! Anyhoo....
FRIDAY THE 13TH FEARBOOK # 1 -- Basic Jason Voorhees stuff. Though it continued the plot of the past couple miniseries which was nice for once. Jason gets his vengeance, kills everyone, and lots of brutal death scenes to boot. If you like this stuff, buy it, cherish it, and most of all...don't get kill by a guy who's inhuman and wearing a hockey mask. 6/10
UNCANNY X-MEN # 475 -- I wasn't going to get this because I made a pact with myself to only read Astonishing X-Men. But Brubaker has kicked so much ass on Captain America, got me into the character. And he's ruling ass on Daredevil. So, I took a chance simply because it was a small week of comics. I liked it, wasn't earth shatteringly great. Though I think, out of anything, I'm more confused than anything. I read Deadly Genesis so I have the basic idea of what's going on...but isn't Warpath dead? I'll stick with it and see how it goes....the cover was bad ass though. 7/10
BEYOND # 1 -- It was all right. How Kraven The Hunter is magically alive again bothers me, unless it's a different Kraven...and I thought even Kraven's son was dead during the Clone Saga. The idea is a little boring to me and the characters that were chosen are a little odd. I'd probably keep getting this if I weren't getting so many comics already, but I'm definitely passing on this miniseries, and NOT BECAUSE OF THE ENDING. Just...something that doesn't interest me what so ever. I need to make room for other things. 7/10
LAST PLANET STANDING # 5 OF 5 -- Nothing earth shattering here either. Just Tom Defalco and Pat Olliffe telling a straight forward Marvel event story, with Galactus trying to destory the world. Nothing new, nothing fancy. Just a fun story with the MC2 universe. It was good to see Spider-Girl sort of save the day though. But next week is what I'm looking forward to as Spider-Girl comes to a close, for now...at least. 6.5/10
THE THING # 8 -- Final issue of this series. And the question is "Why?". It had everything you wanted out of a comic. Drama, love interest, comedy, friendship. Adults and kids could both read this and highly enjoy it. But it was a great farewell issue. Nice touch with the Great Lakes...err...Champions. The Imp side story was really funny. And Ben finally getting some play, yeah, he deserves it. This issue was full on perfect and should prove to these ass clown editors at Marvel who they're top writer really is. 10/10
MARVEL TEAM UP # 22 -- If it wasn't for Kirkman telling a good story I'd have dropped this book a couple issues ago. Man, is this artwork just HARD TO TAKE. This book is close to the chopping block, how about put an artist on there who ISN'T going to ruin the story. Would be nice. Titannus looks to be coming back, and that spells trouble. And I hope that Freedom Ring pulls through, maybe see more of him later on in the series... 7.5/10
DETECTIVE COMICS # 821 -- Wow. Great debut for the new creative team. Excellent plotline and a, surprising, one-shot story. Wait, it's not a six issue arc that can be collected into a trade paper back?! MY WORD! Art was good though the white flashes that showed the contact of the kicks and punches was rather annoying and took away from the art. But nicely tuned story, with an interesting new villain. I highly recommend this to anyone, even if you're not into Batman...it may get you into the character. Next issue, the new Riddler. Bring it. 9.5/10
THE PUNISHER # 35 -- Now on the other hand. We've got the lovely padded six issue arcs. While Ennis does a good job at it, I really think this Barracuda storyline could have been wrapped up a little sooner than this. Basically it was just Barracuda getting on Dermot's side, and wedging between him and the *****. Little Punisher in this issue, but he is on his way to deal out the punishment that a lot of the characters in this book deserve. Next issue is what I've been waiting for, too bad it TOOK SO LONG. 7/10
52 WEEK 9 -- Nicely balanced with the plot lines here. Though Delivance really reminds me of Galactus, and it's hard for me to take it seriously. But Adam Strange is bad ass, and that's all that counts. The Question returned to 52 this week, thank God, and approached Montoya in the lesbian bar, haha. Though I like how Montoya is just as confused as the reader is about The Question, hopefully we learn more about him. And Steel, I hope, gets Luthor because he's really getting on my nerves. And hopefully Natasha wises up and sees Luthor is using her, how she didn't realize he was a bad guy to begin with anyway is beyond me...but it wouldn't be a story if she didn't blindly go into getting superpowers. Hopefully, Animal Man, Adam Strange and Starfire get off that planet soon. Delivance is just way too much of a Galactus rip off for my tastes.
I highly recommend people get into 52 as soon as possible. It's probably one of the best books being put out on the stands, and it doesn't even have the top 3 DC characters in the book, all a bunch of lesser known characters carrying this well written and thought out series. Marvel eat your heart out, never thought I'd see DC beat Marvel at it's own game. 9/10
