Some quick final reviews before new comics come out tomorrow.
Justice Society Of America #42
I'm so glad I dropped both Society and League from my pull list. I only picked this book off the shelf to finish this final storyline that is so losely tied into Brightest Day. Used to be (waayyy back in the 70's and 80's) that a crossover between the Society and League was the highlight of the year. They would be my favorite issues of Justice League; but, now with the Society constantly appearing in their magazine, it's no big deal.
The tie-in all centers around Jade, who's resurrection has turned into a total snooze-fest. Her past romance with Kyle has been so quickly glossed over, and now we have this strung out battle between the two groups vs. the Starheart that's taken over her brother and father. Kyle does show up; but, the drama is sucked out of their reunion by petty squabbling.
It's sad. DC keeps trying the "Under New Management" approach with so many of their titles; but, they seriously need some great writers. I might complain about Bendis and Brubaker are doing with Avengers; but, it's a hell of a lot better than DC's team books. I can't think of a single one that I'd miss if I dropped them all, including Simone's.
Batman: Streets Of Gotham #15
This issue, no backup story. Instead, we get the same price; but, fewer pages. (27, if I counted correctly.) Brandon does a decent job telling a Two-Face story; but, it just doesn't feel right to me. Two-Face is easily killed off (or, we're suppose to believe that), and this issue just makes me think of Two-Face stories I've enjoyed more in the past. As I cut back on my comic buying, this one might not last long. All the stories I've read so far aren't that essential to anything else going on in Bat's world. I guess I'll wait and see what happens when Bruce Wayne finally returns to reserve that judgement, though.
Brightest Day #8
Where the last issue finally sparked some interest, this goes back to making me not care. Everything slows down again, as we get little bits of story concerning the various heroes involved. Hawkman and Hawkgirl, which takes up half the issue, are the most boring couple in DC history...and, they continue to drag the story down. Martian Manhunter is featured a bit more...but, we have another storyline where the Manhunter discovers there might be another green Martian on Earth. (Even though I've been reading a fair portion of DC comics for the past 5 years or so...it's a pretty short amount of time. And, I must say, most of the stories featuring MM have featured some aspect of this theme. Come on, DC writers. Think of something new, already!) Deadman, the most interesting person, is only featured for a few pages. So disappointing.
Lady Deadpool One-Shot
This came out a few weeks back, I think. But, I finally read it, and just letting everyone to stay away. It's utter crap. When..or if...I do a year end review of all of Marvel's comics again, it will be up for Worst Of The Year.
Dark Tower: The Gunslinger-The Journey Begins #4
Interesting 2-part story featuring the Not-Men. I think I remember reading about them in the old Gunslinger novels...but, this story doesn't seem familiar to me. I really like who the writers are mixing old and new together to keep faithful Stephen King readers interested; but, I'm also kind of wanting to see The Drawing Of The Three get started. The end of the book has some history of Billy-Bumblers, for those unfamiliar with that creature.
Uncanny X-Men #527
I love the parts of this story that deal with Hope; but, the rest have been utter crap. Just when readers get interested in the X-Men again with a big crossover event, things seem to go downhill quickly with the main title. I'm tired of the Emma Frost/Cyclops relationship. We're constantly teased about whether it will last or not. I'm at the point I wish it was over. Namor's character is being wasted here. Thank God the Vampire storyline has been so good.
