Marvel Zombies vs Army of Darkness #5

This is the end to a wonderful mini-series. As an Evil Dead and Marvel comics fan it was good to see a writer doing this project who had a good handle about what both respective universes were all about. From little winks and nods to the general tone, this book never missed a beat.

I knew Dazzler and the Scarlet Witch were going to bite it before the end but it was still a little sad to see her going out begging Ash to find a way to stop the infection, especially since we knew that was impossible. Still the reappearance of the Punisher threw me for a loop and had me laughing. Doom saving the people of Latveria/Ash was cool, especially since he was only doing it to "spite" Richards. Great characterization.

And how about that end! Ash on the run with Marvel Werewolves in pursuit! Great dark humor like that made this a critical success in my eyes.

Thor #1

Well, we're off to a promising start. I enjoyed the first issue of Thor for the most part, especially that little scuffle that he had with the creatures in the void. I loved the art there when he sees his hammer and reaches out for it, really hit the fanboy in me.

However, I'm cautiously optimistic. JMS' Spider-Man started off nicely too, only to descend into a real ugly mess. Maybe this will be more up his alley since he's obviously been dying to handle material that's more "mystical" in content.

I'm not looking forward to the Iron Man/Thor face off in issue #3. I would be if it was done by a more balanced author, but JMS likes to write Iron Man as a wannabe Gestapo. We'll see.

Anyway, I'll take off a point just because some of the narration was a little rough at times and the Blake stuff was slightly confusing.

Countdown #43

A bit better. The Flash death at least gave some context for the issue to center itself around so it was definitely more focused than previous issues have been. Is Jimmy going to become a superhero? I don't know about this. Less Monitors and a reduced role for that Forerunner chick meant I was able to actually READ more of the issue so I guess that has to count for something.

I think I'm the only one who's looking forward to seeing Thor and Iron Man deal with their issues in #3. I'm looking forward to Thor catching up on everything, in fact. I want to see either Beta Ray Bill visit him or him visit Beta Ray Bill, I want to see him react to the big cosmic stuff of Annihilation and the Surfer's return to being Galactus' herald, I want to see him react to Cap's death, I want to see him meet Wiccan and track down Tarene in the Initiative, I want to see Jane Foster realize that Blake is back, I want to see what he does about the WWH situation, I want to see him meet up with Hercules and react to the fact that Ares is an Avenger now... Thor, more than any other character, has some involvement in pretty much every microcosm of the Marvel universe, and I'm looking forward to how he reintegrates into all of those microcosms.

I guess its because as an Iron Man fan I don't like it when he gets written like a gestapo officer and that's what JMS wrote him like during the Spider-Man issues of Civil War.

The only person who's really written him as an outright monster was Paul Jenkins, in my opinion. Staging the attack with the Crimson Dynamo wasn't that bad, since he probably worked out an arrangement for the Dynamo not to hurt anyone. The dirt that Jenkins had the reporters in Frontline dig up on him, however, made him seem like a would-be fascist. JMS and Millar made him more *****ebag than fascist, I thought.

Anyway, I doubt Thor'll kick Iron Man's ass. They'll probably just talk, like Nova and Iron Man just talked. I'm sure Tony will try to sway Thor to register and work with him in SHIELD--maybe even on the Mighty Avengers--but I very much doubt Thor will take him up on it. He'll probably just give Tony a stern talking-to and be on his way.

When you read Loners, the "hints" are sort of blaringly obvious.

I did reread LONERS #4, and you are right; it IS glaringly obvious that Julie's "not into men". I almost am embarassed that I missed it. I can tolerate being oblivious to the signals of women in real life, but in comics I have time to absorb their lines.

It was, "Now that Blake and the cane are back, does that mean the stupid 60-second rule is back, too?"

I'm not even a Thor fanboy and I wondered about that. Some could say that a powerful character like Thor "needs" a weakness, but some could also argue it is about as corny as GL's old "can't effect anything yellow" weakness. I'm not a fan of it. Never was. It was most often just a plot device. Than again, so was "Spider-Man running out of web fluid in the web shooters" and I sort of miss that. Oh, well.

I reread the issue and I agree on the art; Coipel draws a big, heavy Thor. I mean, he's 6'6'' and over 450 lbs of pure Asgardian muscle, he SHOULD look friggin' huge. I agree on some of the narration though. I don't mind the costume redesign as it keeps a lot of the classic elements, although if I could remove one thing it'd be the sleeves.

If you're talking about Stark's actions in the ASM PRELUDE arc, he hired Titanium Man, not Crimson Dynamo. Although I guess most Commie armor junkies blend after a while.

Usually, hiring a supervillain is not seen as a noble act. Especially one who hasn't in any way reformed. Sure, TM's not Carnage or Bullseye, but still.

It is sort of a shame that in one way or the other, what was the "big three" of the Avengers is shattered, never to return. Cap is dead right now and Marvel seems to be intent on keeping it that way for at least a year, especially with Brubaker likely begging to make Winter Soldier fill the role eventually. Iron Man spent the CW being overly harsh on former friends and now with some sense of sanity on most writers (save Jenkins), he is trying to come back from that, but still has made deep wounds with some of Thor's fellow Avengers, including Hercules. It may be years before these three are on one side again and it makes sense.

Both Marvel and DC get a lot of drama out of "shattering" longtime character friendships or romances, but I can't remember said actions ever ADDING anything worthwhile to those characters involved.
