BOUGHT/THOUGHT March 14th

Using INVINCIBLE as an example. Very clever. A masterstroke. I have no doubt it's a true testimonial, but way to strike at that heart on my sleeve. ;)

Yeah, we come fans are a hard breed sometimes, or at least some of us. But I also feel it just is a representation of what effects other people in "real life". Most people don't like confronting things that are new, or being forced to challenge preconcieved notions. Most of us just want to reaffirm what we already accept, over and over, until we die. This alone is a major stumbling block for humans in general, IMO, and is something that amazingly, animals lack. They have to be open minded and adapt to surroundings, or die. But humans have been so adept at making the surroundings conform to us, instead of vice versa, that for many of us, this art has been lost. Plus, there's also ego issues. It is an affront for many of our egos to admit to being ignorant, wrong, or both. Even worse if we have to reveal this to someone else who has exposed us.

Whether it is a fan who doesn't give a new book a try or someone who carries prejudices for life, it all is the same. Expecting different it sometimes folly. Of course there are people who are open minded and are willing to rise above their flaws. I'm only halfway there. I know my flaws. Just haven't mastered changing them. I've gotten old and stubborn. When we're young, nothing is impossible, and then when we grow up, suddenly nothing seems possible.

But then again, I'm a pessimist by trade. :D

Beyond all this, the ugly truth is I never have enough money for my hobby. Had I the time and resources I'd be buying entire shelves of material. But I don't so I have to choose my new "explorations" very carefully.

you speak the truth, dread. were i rich man, my collection would be a very respectable one, instead of the modest, humble little thing that it is.

you're also right on the money when you mention the difference between being young and being old. when i was younger, all comics from all publishers were fair game. if it was in color, then i was in. these days i'm a hell of a lot more jaded. you start thinking in terms of business instead of going around having that wide-eyed wonder. i look at a book like invincible and i think, "ugh. an image book." call it ego or call it stupidity, but there it is. in my close minded little bubble of a world, there was no way that an image book was going to beat out most marvel and dc books in teh superhero game. but like i said, i went on a whim and picked up the three most current issues and i was blown away. the sheer heart that kirkman manages to be able to pour into this thing is phenomenal. but i don't need to tell you; you already know.

and speaking of invincible, i've been able to track down a good chunk of the back issues here in my city, while finding issues 1, 3, 4, 5 and 10 (all for TEN DOLLARS TOTAL) via craigslist from some guy in brooklyn. talk about a steal.

Very true. The Marvel DTV's seriously need some steady competition to get them to improve, and while the HELLBOY/SCREW ON HEAD stuff is good, DC is really the only way to do that. I am still awaiting an American animated epic that is sort of "our AKIRA", if you know what I am talking about. And the first thing is we have to throw away the idea that cartoons are for kids, and embrace that they are for everyone. And we have to commit to a show that is over 90 minutes, if not 2 hours. I doubt we ever will reach that point; Warner Bros. and Disney have had a stranglehold on the medium for way too long, but hopefully I will be wrong. I am a major fan of what animation can do, and I love seeing good stuff.

to be fair, it looks like marvel's dtv films ARE in fact improving, albeit a very slow pace. i got around to watching the avengers movies, and i gotta say the iron man dtv movie was an improvement over them. the dr. strange trailer looks to be, so far, an improvement over iron man; so i think they're definitely progressing.

the real problem lies in there source material. they're never going to "out do" anyone if they keep pumping out films that take bits and pieces from the characters over the years. if they're going to make a dr. strange film for example, they need to base it entirely off of a great storyline, like "the oath". there's no need to fiddle with origins, and update costumes. leave that stuff be, and work on the damn stories, you know? it's in that regard that i have complete faith that "the new frontier" will be superb.

i'd love to see a "death of captain marvel" movie, or an "infinity gauntlet" movie. hell, if marvel got the balls to produce an "annihilation" dtv, i'd be all over it. the point is, they've got so many near flawless story lines to choose from, and they're perfectly content with creating "hip and edgy" updates for their dtv's. it's a shame.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!:D Funniest.Spelling.Error.EVER!!!!!:D:D

Grow up.

That's pretty good. Glad to see you understand my point. When it comes to back issues, I prefer trades. They usually are easier to find, cheaper in the long run and you don't need to be as careful about them. But however you manage to read INVINCIBLE, it works. Because the title isn't the best seller, sometimes finding back issues of that can be harder then top selling titles that shops overorder, like, say, ALL-STAR issues.

I enjoyed the ULTIMATE AVENGERS films, but there's no denying they are flawed, and I actually found INVINCIBLE IRON MAN a bit mediocre overall. The issue may be that Marvel may be trying for a more "mainstream" appeal with their DTV's, especially as they all are locks to air on CN at least once or twice. DR. STRANGE looks good, but it remains to be seen if they'll actually adapt any of their stories, or just look to make cartoons with less network interference.

DC, on the other hand, and based by their limited teasers, want to strictly adapt specific stories. That is why they have announced adaptations of DEATH OF SUPERMAN, NEW FRONTIER, and JUDAS COVENANT. Naturally, there will be alterations. But at least in the beginning, DC seems to want to use their DTV's to gear towards their hardcores. Perhaps this is because, unlike Marvel, DC almost always has 1-2 cartoons on TV to appeal to the mainstream, whether on Kids WB or CN, something Marvel couldn't claim for the past 4 years. Or DC could be talking bull and we'll find out when these "adaptations" start to be shown.

Marvel has less "out of continuity iconic stories" than DC has to work with, but I see "Marvels" as a no-brainer. Unfortunately, the rights to some of the characters therein are divided (Spider-Man to Sony, The X-Men at Fox, etc), but it will be interesting how Marvel's DTV's shift if the DC ones are as faithful as they claim and make a dent. Competition is good.

I just finished DC: THE NEW FRONTIER and I enjoyed it a lot, even if some people felt the ending was "too neat". It was well paced and drawn and was able to touch upon many characters and angles of the DCU, all the while giving major focus to Hal Jordon, Martian Manhunter, King Faraday and The Flash, characters that are often tossed aside for Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman (who also do have some time). It's a great re-imagining of the end of the Golden Age and the dawn of the Silver Age during the 50's era of McCarthyism. At the same time, it made me sad because I imagined CIVIL WAR could have easily become a more modern version of this tale, had Marvel been interested in a story and not a Hollywood blockbuster. But, it's a moot point now.

Ragging on Civil War? NEVER a moot point.

Civil War sucked, incidentally.

civil war is giving me dan slott on an ongoing book that literally lets him have free reign over the marvel sandbox.

for that, i'm grateful.

Touche'. As I have said a few times, hopefully some of what grows from the scorched earth left behind from CW is better than the story itself. And at least CW, flaws and all, was better than HOM, if only because HOM dramatically lowered the bar for events. That is, so long as the plot advanced in every issue, it was "better".

yes, "house of m" sucked. it sucked hard.

from the solicits, a lot the fallout from civil war seems to be more interesting than the event itself:

-mighty avengers is a fun read (in it's first and only issue),
-slott's book has me chomping at the bit to get my hands on it,
-captain america was a top notch book before, but now i'm completely hooked, and
-new avengers has gotten considerably better.

it wasn't a horrible event like some people would have you believe. it had it's flaws, for sure, but it was paced well and it certainly looked beautiful.

like i said, (and seem to keep saying), anything that gives me a dan slott book is okay with me.

Step 1: Package the same 3 thoughts on comics in 5000-word posts, every week

Step 2: Obtain the world's worst sense of humor. Possibly procured from a 75-year old librarian, through means of satanic ritual. But a boring one, with no virgins

Step 3: Regress to a 4th-grade spelling level

Step 4: Daily insufferableness practice

With these 4 easy steps you too can be as dynamic and exciting a personality as Dread, physical man-mountain and mental treasure of the world!

I agree with your above statements, although I don't read Cap. More Slott is good. NA has improved since CW, and Might Avengers is off to a decent start, barring the fact that Ms. Marvel is the only member of Iron Fascist's team of stormtroopers who seems to express any remourse.

Oh you're so impressively mature Dread, teach us the ways of superior living:whatever:

Well, IMO, part of it is not using any excuse to laugh about a word that may seem simular, or is, the name of a bodily organ or fluid, especially one involved in sex. That sort of thing is cute in grade school, junior high, or high school, but past 21 it gets old, very fast.

Quick test: Penis, penis, penis.

If that made you chuckle, you are not as mature as you could be.

Of course, I'm a stick-in-the-mud a lot, so this is entirely subjective. :D

As opposed to the perfection that is Not Jake, right? Believe what you want. I've never seen anyone so penalized for typo's than myself at SHH. Ever. Especially since I see worse on a daily basis and don't rag them for it.

I do believe what I want to, and I believe that if you're going to be the Elongated Poster you should be able to spell. (I also believe that you don't know how to spell.)

Posts where I have more time have less typo's than ones where I have less. I know, a daffy, logical reason, but there it is.

For real man? You took it that seriously for real or was it because of what Not Jake said? Because I didn't take the "grow up" seriously. YOU'VE never seen anyone bashed so much for spelling but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. You should've seen what we put AnnoyingSilence through in the DTL and what Kebab Gud goes through in the DC boards. Seriously, if it bothers you that much that people have mentioned it on 2 of the Bought/Thought threads then get Firefox or update it if you have it and you'll be rid of the ribbing.

I'm not talking about typos, Dread, I'm talking about how bad you are at spelling.

jesus christ.

no one's forcing you to read anyone's posts. get over it. and yourself.

Look at all that testosterone on the deck. Grown men making a huge sht about grammar. On the internet.

Yeah, that's hot:dry:.

Considering most times I post from college labs or cyber cafes, that'd be a tall order as they usually have security barring DL's of that kind of stuff. If they all had Mozilla Firefox, I'd be in heaven.

I also tire of snickering about certain words. "Tee Hee, he said 'come'. Hyuck!" Please. It got old after high school and for anyone over 21 it just grains on me after a while. I actually do have a sense of humor, but finding words regarding sex organs or fluids comical in and of themselves is something I left behind years ago.

Exactly how many Spelling Bee trophies do you polish every night? ;)

Oh man, AS in the DTL. Good times, good times.

that said, don't even pretend a well timed fart doesn't make you chuckle.

I forgot about GL Corps number whatever. Here:

Green Lantern Corps #PUPA
Stuff happens. Soranik stuff. EVIL KORUGAR. Uh...Guy...Kilowog...yellow things.

(7 out of 10)

And now you know.

that said, don't even pretend a well timed fart doesn't make you chuckle.

Fart jokes are my weakness. I laugh at even bad ones. Like the ones in the "out-take" reel for ULTIMATE AVENGERS 2. It's not a 100% thing as they can be overplayed and annoying at times, but yeah, I'd be more likely to chuckle at that then a crotch joke.

Awesome reviews guys!

Thanks!

Super late reviews.

Mystery in Space #7- I love this mini. This issue delivered on both story and action, even the Weird's part of the comic was good. The L.E.G.I.O.N. get their asses handed to them so it's up the the Hardcore Station's residents to save the day. Comet is all fragged up and has to take drastic measures to be in fighting form to take out the Church. I love how Dark manipulated events to make Comet look like the bad guy not only to the Station's general populace but through mind tampering the Weird. I was totally caught unaware for how Comet set up Prime-7 and thought it was a kick ass moment, he's a thinker and not just a fighter and he had been relying too much on the latter. The flow of this series has been incredible and you feel like thinks have been drawing to a head and that it can all be tied up in the last issue in a credible manner. Some of you Marvel enthusiasts would do well on picking up the trade, it's written by Jim Starlin and Ron Lim assists with the art. The character gets explained as the series goes by so there shouldn't be any of that "DC characters are so cluttered" crap I often hear.

52 Week 45- Adam vents. I hope that all you "BA has been *****fied" people were shut up.:p:D I thought DC was going to go with a sick twist and have Manitou Raven be part of the Death horseman but I'm sooooooo glad they didn't. Also relieved that Atom Smasher broke out of the funk he was in and started showing some backbone again. Sivana is so crazy it makes me laugh!:D I loved how everyone was freakin' out and he was looking forward to BA getting there.

Ghost Rider #9- The only way I can tolerate the storyline is by imagining this is an alternate universe GR.:o I mean, the story in itself isn't bad but it makes little sense when put up against canon. Are they trying to set this up as the Dan GR and make it a mystery who the spirit is? 'Cause it's not really working. I'm Texeira's lil' ***** so I'm on this until he goes away or the writing is so bad that not even Tex can keep me on the comic. BTW, they keep making GR a total badass and you just know that Hulk is gonna wipe his butt with him in WWH.

Green Arrow #72- Ollie: You're a hypocrite. Batman: You're a hypocrite. Both: Pwned. Jason Todd: We're so alike. Mia: No, we're not. JT: Yes! We. Are. *Psychobabble* Mia:Well........you were an octopus monster! JT: LAWL!!!! Mia:*emo funk* Oh! And people find out that Mayor Queen played the market to get the money he has and he funded the Outsiders, that team of outcast heroes that faked their deaths and people know they're alive and hate them because they're so radical, so now the Mayor's in hot water.

Teen Titans #44- I'll always be the fringe ASSHATter because of my Spanishianness and because I don't have the seething hatred for John's the others have. Even with that said and with all the people going bonkers for the action this issue, it felt kinda meh to me. Jericho as a fighter and having Deathstroke narrate to us that he's now become a fighter felt REALLY forced. The way he "paid homage" to his dad by impaling a sword through him really makes me think that it might be someone else that came back and not Joey. This issue picked up from the rest but even so it made it average to passable. The only interesting part to me was the one with Kid Devil.

New X-Men #36-
This title is always delivers. It makes you care about the characters and you actually see them grow bit by bit. X-23 & Hellion rescue Mercury from her captors and she even kicks some butt by taking back part of the metal they took from her. I usually prefer when the title characters handle things themselves but this was a clear case where the X-Men definitely were needed. Rockslide sometimes irritates me for his shallowness but he almost always makes me laugh. As expected, there are always moments that tug at your heartstrings. I'm skeptical about the developments with Magik. I always thought that she had gone through enough to bring back the character and from the June solicitations I know that she IS making a comeback. I guess I'll wait and see but I'm dreading what they're going to do with this.

My biggest conflict this issue was regarding what actions to take against an enemy. I applaud Hellion's actions regarding Kimura. I guess I'm ol' school in that aspect and feel that heroes shouldn't kill and should take a higher moral road than their enemies. On the other hand, I was cheering Emma's badass moment. I'm glad that she punished Kimura, but what she did is what I don't quite condone. It feels to me like it's something that's going to come back and bite them in the ass. I'm left wondering if Emma couldn't have done something else to Kimura's mind instead of something unrelated to X-23. But, we just have to take it for granted and say "It's the White Queen, what do you expect." Even so it didn't tarnish a very good issue.
