Silent War #1
wow...in a good way. this is a VERY good start.
this is a sequel of sorts to "son of m", which itself was a psuedo-sequel of "house of m". at the end of son of m, quicksilver steals the terrigan mists to restore his mutant powers (giving him time travel capabilities), and to restore the powers of the mutants that were depowered by m-day. as a result, the u.s. government stops him and takes the terrigan mists under the guise of homeland security.
this book starts with a group of inhumans, led by gorgon, making a statement at a charity event in new york. tensions escalate, and some of the hostages are killed. the fantastic four show up, and try to convince their former allies to stand down, but they fight, and the four easily defeat them. they group escapes, except for gorgon who is captured and handed over to s.h.i.e.l.d. a council convenes at attilan, with black bolt saying that they will not apologize for the deaths of the civilians, causing a bit of commotion among the other inhumans (including medusa).
meanwhile, gorgon, still in s.h.i.e.l.d. custody, is visited by a mysterious doctor who, in revenge for gorgon's led attack, subjects him to a SECOND exposure to the terrigan mists, to see what would happen. the result, is a very feral, pissed off looking gorgon.
whew...
to start, the artwork is incredible. irving has a very classic feel to him, but it's also very modern as well. he also handles ALL of the art chores, and his coloring work really looks beautiful. i really like his renditions of reed and medusa specifically.
hine's script is also very well done. i only know him from the x-men civil war mini, which i thought was average at best. this time around, he's upped his game, and it's a treat to read. he'll be someone to watch in the future.
all in all, a great first issue. marvel's had some pretty good luck with new series (ongoing or not) these days, which is nice to see. and it's a nice breather from civil war.
