Bought/Thought Jan 16th

Perhaps he's read some since then? And also, Mignola is also available for sampling in film now, which is very loyal to the source material.

He hasn't read any since then. Also, the Hellboy movie is not a good representation of Mignola's work.

Immortal Iron Fist #12 - Despite the fill in artist who made Danny look like a scrawny 12 year old,I'm enjoying the twists and turns this book is bringing. With this issue,it's clear the tournament isn't really the focus of the story,K'un L'un is on the brink of a civil war with Yu-Ti on one side and Lei Kung on the other. It should be interesting to see how Davos and the newly introduced but instantly cool John Aman are going to figure into the revolution. The upcoming Special should be one hell of a read,John Aman is ****ing cool.

Dread, ya gotta buy BND...

Part 2 was far superior to part 1... and you'll love it.

I'm confident that the continuity flaws will be addressed over time.

:yay:

I have to admit, I only peeked in the thread to see if Dread bought it. ;) I think I may make him the same offer I made Cap, since he's on board.

Dread...

See above...

itoc's offer is a good one if you don't want to buy the books immediately...

:yay:

Booster Gold #6 - I didn't see anyone mention it, but did anyone else pick up on the Beatle's homage on page 4 ( a take off on the cover to Abbey Road) I didn't fully get the joke until Booster referred to them as the Beetles. Clever!

Just bought Booster Gold #6, since I missed it yesterday.

It's the best ****ing book I have read ever....period

Wolverine Origins #21 - This is my 1st ever WO comic. I bought it along with last week's issue which was the end of the Captain America story arc. Meh, what can I say? It didn't make me love Daniel Way, but the work he did (assuming the series is consistent) is better than what he did with Ghost Rider. The artwork was solid; I think this is the first time I've seen Wolverine's eyes while in costume. They weren't just white blocks like usual. Way does write a good Deadpool though, his moments made me laugh :woot:

Way doesn't write a good Deadpool. It was horrible.
And he's taking him over soon. Horrible! D:

Not much to get this week...dropping Marvel Comics Presents. A shame...but it really wasn't doing much for me. I'm never been to keen on Alpha Flight stories, and the first one seemed to be getting too many ideas placed into one story which could've been simpler. Maybe it's the fact there's too many stories in one issue, it may have done it for me if they weren't so contained.

Getting my stuff tomorrow. Not liking the sound of the fill in artists for IIF :down

Angel: After the Fall #3
Woo boy. Didn't see that one coming. I like it, but with a reserved sort of liking it reserved for ideas that maybe the most awesome thing ever or may end up being...not that.

I still hate Flouncy Comic Vixen Illyria with the fires of a million burning babies, but at least I can sort of justify it to myself now since they sort of gave a justification for it in this issue re: she's becoming more and more emotional in general. Plus, I'll forgive a lot in the face of the epic awesome known as Illyria VS Dragon.

Art is either improving a bit or I'm getting numb to it. Bright lights and clearer lines help, although Connor is straddling the line between manga bishonen and grimacing pothead for me. Oh, and I wonder if the pointy-headed grey Lord of Santa Monica is supposed to be the shark demon of season six Buffy. You'd think that it'd be easy to tell if someone is supposed to be a shark demon but, no, the art hasn't improved that much yet.

Also, my knowledge of LA is woefully of the lacking. Can anyone tell me if the Playboy Mansion is supposed to be in Beverly Hills and so Illyria is supposed to be the Lord of Beverly Hills that they're talking about?

Booster Gold #6
So, it's totally not going to last. I mean, I give it something like three issues. But the story of it is being so well-told that I'm pretty much sure that it'll all end up for the good. Well, except for Ted fans, obviously.

As with Giffen re: Blue Beetle, Johns is going to be leaving this title soon in the hands of his co-writer Katz, and it'll be then that the merits and strengths of this series will be truly tested. Well it do without Johns? Well it in fact get better? Let's hope it aces the exam, 'cause this book is so integral to DC right now even if they have no idea.

Checkmate #22
If you've been checking out Rucka's Wordballoon interviews -- and I hope you get crabs if you haven't -- he said something cool lately about how he's been pitching a Mademoiselle Marie miniseries for Vertigo and how it would follow various Mlle Maries throughout WW2. The point of this story is that after reading this past issue, it sounds the most awesome thing ever and I hope he gets to do it.

One of the ongoing traits for Josephine is apparently supposed to be her ruthlessness in getting a job done, and a big deal apparently was made out of her shooting a soldier on live television here...except, I'm not sure why it's supposed to be such a big deal, since the very same man just five seconds ago was holding a gun to the head of a reporter and was just now reaching for his gun to kill them. What's the big sin, here? It's not like she shot an unarmed civilian. He was an enemy soldier holding at least three people hostage in a hostage situation where the UN has already implicitly stated that there would be no negotiations. What did people expect Jo to do? Nuzzle him to death?

New White Queen's Bishop and Knight revealed as the new Rocket Red 01 and...uh, the old Bad Samaritan who apparently appeared in a few issues of silver age Outsiders. No idea who they are, but I'm sure they'll be badass and interesting in the span of a few short months.

The Flash #236
And Waid's first arc finishes. Look, if you like the kids, you'll like it. If you don't like the kids, you won't like it. It's pretty simple. I like the kids, so I liked it.

Still hate the art, though, which is unfortunate.

Backup tales on Savoth conclude as well, finally telling the story of where Wally went after drop-kicking Superboy-Prime, and as I feared it makes completely zero sense with Bart's recollection of events. It's a good story of course, which lets me forgive a lot.

Birds of Prey #114
I don't...quite remember if Barbara used to be such a heinous btch. I mean obviously her heinous btchiness is played up here due to plot events, but I can't help but wonder if it's played up reasonably or out-of-character...ily.

McKeever does great work on the other characters, though. It's always fun to see Lady Blackhawk and how awesome she is especially since, as far as I'm aware, she was much more of a support character during Simone's run as opposed to a lead.

Nightwing #140
So, yeah, I bought this and, yeah, it's not fantabulous or anything. There's too much...text. There's absolutely no reason that a flying kick to the face needs to be accompanied by six text boxes explaining technique, air resistance, and room temperature in explicit detail.

But it's a pretty solid start and I do like Tomasi's characterization of characters. He's taking Batguys to a place that's a good place for them. And Morales obviously does bang-up job on art. I do have to laugh at the fact that Dick...er, Richard is withholding the fact that MonsteroftheWeek is wearing Captain Boomerang's costume near the end of the book, and yet looking back through the book, and no point whatsoever is Captain Boomerang's costume ever seen on the guy. What we do see is a blue toga-looking thing that may or may not have folds in the fabric which looks like boomerangs if you tilt your head.

Fallen Angel #23
Have I mentioned yet, how little I care about Jude? 'Cause I don't. I don't care about him at all. Mostly I resent him for wresting the spotlight of this series entirely from the title character. Yes, yes, by now I realize that he's yet another "fallen angel," wow how clever, the problem is that he's just not that cool. He's...interesting, I guess, but he's not cool. Lee is both interesting and cool and she blows things up. Jude's just interesting.

Interesting development with Dolf, though. I always thought he was a big old German prick, literally, but him being a bona fide Nazi was an eye-opener that unfortunately makes a bit too much sense in the city of Bete Noir. And can we finally see Malachi get his head ripped off, already? I don't quite remember when Lee's relationship with him turned from "hated mentor" into "conversational acquaintance"...maybe it happened off-panel or something, I dunno.

Oops, totally forgot.

Justice League of America #17
It's okay, I guess. Did they seriously keep McDuffie so much in the dark about the events of Salvation Run that they literally needed another writer for this arc? Which isn't necessarily a bad thing; Burnett has a fair enough handle on the story and the characters.

Wonder Woman's nonchalant and one-dimensional attitude towards prisoners shipped to another planet irritates me, but chalk that up to yet another person who never read Rucka's run. I would like to see the JLA deal with the events of Salvation Run, but so far it's coming off too...I dunno...there's not a lot of depth about it at the moment. Every single villain on Earth shipped off to another planet should be something that raises as least as much qualms with the League as Teh Mindwipes, and yet here we get nothing more than "Don't trust the government, guyz; they're Up to No Good."

The backup story about Vixen's powers is actually a bit more interesting. It's like they're finally asking the questions that need to be answered about this whole Vixen power flux tomfoolery.

Dread, ya gotta buy BND...

Part 2 was far superior to part 1... and you'll love it.

I'm confident that the continuity flaws will be addressed over time.

:yay:

At this point my official stance on BND is "trade waiting". For a big book like OMD, which even if all the angry fans posted a boycott (and judging from early sales guesses, that hasn't happened), it will sell in the Top 20 easily, trade-waiting doesn't hurt it. Now, a smaller book like THE ORDER is crippled by trade-waiters because it is a low seller.

I flipped through both issues on the stands but I'll never claim to know every detail from a flip.

I have to admit, I only peeked in the thread to see if Dread bought it. ;) I think I may make him the same offer I made Cap, since he's on board.

Which was?

I'm still trade-waiting. I'll see what others think, and the sales projections and whatnot, before going in. OMD has really done Slott no favors, and my hesitation about BND has had nothing to do with him as a writer specifically, or even McNiven as an artist. But, I've made this clear before, and people harp on me when I repeat myself. :p

Pick up Hulk #1 Dread, it's big dumb fun.

I strongly considered it. :D It was over-ordered, it'll be in some shop next week if I change my mind.

JLA - a super-villain with a magic crowbar? Who's next - The Immortal Iron Toaster?

Yeah, I seriously can't believe it took DC over 40 years to rip off Wrecker. ;)

I'm glad you like the book and all, but sometimes your comments crack me up. This is one of them. I know for a fact that you've never read any Mignola. I have to assume this is you trying to come off as better read than you actually are. There's no Mignola vibe coming off of TUA. Mignola's concepts may be fantastical, but his execution is a LOT more subtle. If this has any sort of creator's vibe to it, it's Grant Morrison. Even Gerard Way will tell you as much.

I actually did appreciate Doc Destruction defending me. Thanks, dude.

I suppose you would say that I have only myself to blame for this sort of snarky comment. Yes, I have revealed that I really haven't much, if any actual Mignola comics. I've seen the movie, the animated Hellboy DTV's (which I enjoyed a lot more), and the pilot of SCREW ON HEAD, which I thought was rather faithful. TUA actually reminded me a bit of ASOH. Collecting the HELLBOY/BPRD trades is on my ever-increasing "must get to" list of trades I'd love to buy when I have a better job with more extra income. PhotoJones probably doesn't believe this is true, he believes I never plan to read any trade of anything, but that's his entitlement. He is allowed to be wrong about me. PJ's a poster that I have gotten into many convo's with at SHH and I would say we agree about stuff maybe 60% of the time, it is that 40% where things can get exciting, and he is the poster child of never revealing anything about yourself or your tastes or your "read list" on a MB if you don't want it beaten over your head like a weapon almost weekly.

What I love about this is that PJ's post is at the least confrontational, but if I call him on it, he'd deny it. So what are you confronting? I can't be reminded of one person's work from another even if I have only seen alternate media versions which said creator was heavily involved in? That somehow I am, what, inaccurate or stupid if I do so? What is your goal here?

Booster Gold #6 - I didn't see anyone mention it, but did anyone else pick up on the Beatle's homage on page 4 ( a take off on the cover to Abbey Road) I didn't fully get the joke until Booster referred to them as the Beetles. Clever!

I noticed it, too. I also noticed two coloring errors around Dan Garret's mask at various points. But I didn't mind.

Oh, and I also don't doubt that this whole "retcon" won't last, but I will enjoy the ride. After OMD, a retcon, even an attempted and temporary one, that stays true to the title character is a whiff of fresh air.

How can you judge it's faithfullness if you've never read the comic?

Um...I talk about my tastes ALL THE TIME.

No goal, really. Like I said, I was commenting on how I thought it was funny that you'd compare something to something else that you haven't read.

How can you judge it's faithfullness if you've never read the comic?

I'd heard it was faithful from others who had read it. I vaguely recall reading or flipping through the comic of that once, but it was ages ago.

True, maybe I should start beating you over the head with it too. ;)

No goal, really. Like I said, I was commenting on how I thought it was funny that you'd compare something to something else that you haven't read.

Fair enough. I was just feeling a "you stupid *****e" vibe from your post. It hasn't been a bad day so I wasn't irked or anything, I was just curious.

BrianWilly said:
Ooooh, so it's a pattern with you.

I see now.

Smelling the hint of blood in the water, BrianWilly moves over to investigate, seeing a chance to possibly kick someone when they are down. Awesome. :D

We all have patterns. :o And no, I didn't even mean your Whedon-infatuation this time.
