Its nice to see DOFP as the #1 highest grossing film of the year worldwide!

Its nice to see DOFP as the #1 highest grossing film of the year worldwide!

It won't last long though, but it's good to see the X-Men films back in the Top 10, hopefuly the following films in the franchise will keep bringing trust back to the fans and the GA.

I think it's fair to assume that the top 4 films right now won't leave the top 10 overall. Unless the Hunger Games is lucky enough to get a fine boost, Transformers andThe Hobbit are probably going to be the only billion films of the year.

Neither of Transformers or The Hobbit will reach a billion imo.

Hunger Games is building off two spectacular movies ans has room to grow so it might crack a billion.

Other candidates: Interstellar, Guardians of the Galaxy

Hunger Games will certainly grow, but i'm not sure it will get there yet, i think the last instalment will be the one reaching the billion number. I realy doubt Guardians will get there, at most i think it will make Captain America 2 numbers, and even that is pushing it i think. Interstellar has a fair chance if it can get as much interest to the GA as Inception did, which i doubt, since the concept doesn't interest as many people.

I don't see how TF 4 and Hobbit won't reach a billion, Hobbit is going to be the last of the trilogy, which is definitely going to give it a boost from the last film, while Transformers is very strong worldwide, and has started with a strong foot.

I dont know about the hobbit, the last 2 havent exactly set fire to the world and the bad word of mouth branding them the prequels of this decade doesnt help ethier.

I cant see interstellar doing more then inception did. I imagine those numbers being similar or if its easy to follow for the general audience then maybe it will mirror gravity.

Transformers had the same global first weekend as xmen -- 300 million. Why would its final tally be 50% higher, if anything it should have weaker legs than xmen.

I think the Hobbit Trilogy more or less echoes the Star Wars Prequels, i don't think the last film will make less than the 2nd film, conclusions usualy make more, Desolation also didn't realy drop all that much to make a Billion for the 3rd film seem all that big a number.

Anyone knows if there's a film like Life of Pi or Gravity coming out that can surprise people by being critically aclaimed, offering an experience worth the money they spent and being more financially successful than expected? Interstellar seems to be the most likely one to be like that, but i think that one billion is pushing it.

I'd be very, very surprised if Guardians of the Galaxy even approaches Captain America: The Winter Soldier numbers, let alone a billion.

I think Interstellar is going to do very well, but nothing really indicates that it's an action blockbuster, but more of a thoughtful science fiction drama.

The Penguins of Madagascar might have more of a chance than either considering that the last Madagascar movie made $746 million worldwide.

X-Men opened internationally in almost all markets the first weekend. Transformers hasn't opened in most of Europe or Latin America yet. It still might not reach 1 Billion WW though since whatever it gains in China in terms of B.O. it's probably going to lose in the US. and its opened softer than T3 in SK and Australia by about 30% which might not bode well for other markets.

Yeah, it's hard to compare them. Out of the around $200 million Transformers did internationally almost half of it (around $90 million) came from one country, China.

Thanks for the correction, good post.

Hoping GOTG does well but no way will it get to a Billion, it's a new franchise and doesn't have an A-list Director or huge stars

How to Train Your Dragon 2 has to be the biggest disappointment of the summer. There is no competition for kids and it's still going to struggle to hit 150mil. Sure it will probably do well internationally but under 200mil here in the states and under freakin The Lego Movie? Nobody thought that would happen. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a close second.

Yea, I'm really shocked at HTTYD's performance, thought for sure that would knock it out of the park this year.

How did How to Train Your Dragon 2 not perform better? There's no real logical reason given it's coming off a very successful predecessor, is critically acclaimed and has no other animated competition.

Few possible reasons....too long between movies, first one wasn't as loved as it seemed, Maleficent is stealing its thunder.

Yeah Liam you pretty much summed up why I think it underperformed. Even with all that I still think it going under 190mil to be surprising. I thought it was going to do like 300mil so yeah...shows what I know.

I think Big Hero 6 is one to watch. Remember nobody was talking a billion with Frozen either. I doubt that Big Hero 6 can repeat that, but it might be a contender for top five or ten placement if it delivers for the right audience, and the teaser was well received.

I'm completely baffled by its performance, tbh. I mean, it's the summer. Seems like there would be room enough on the battlefield for two major family films, so I don't get why Maleficent would be stealing its thunder. Given the legs of the first one, I also don't see how it "wasn't as beloved" as people thought, either. I mean, those kinds of legs don't happen to movies that people are lukewarm about.

And here's where I mention that I was kinda lukewarm on it myself and have yet to see the sequel, lol.

I'll be honest as well, I didn't have any overwhelming desire to see it in theatres either, I picked up the first one on DVD as a blind buy because it was highly recommended and thought it was a very good film. That said, I never fell in love with it like I did with something like Toy Story, The Incredibles, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs or Wreck it Ralph. It would seem my own level of interest in the film was shared by a lot of people. Everything on paper though seems like it was ripe for a big haul, but then again when has the Box Office ever really been a fair game?

'Transformers: Age of Extinction' Stronger In China Than North America

on July 02, 2014

Wednesday, 7/2 Update: According to China Movie Media Group, Transformers: Age of Extinction has tallied $134.5 million in China after five days of release. In North America, the sci-fi flick is up to $121 million after five days, and it's highly unlikely that it will make enough on Wednesday to reach $135 million considering that it grossed $10.5 million on Monday and $10.4 million on Tuesday.

It bears repeating that a dollar in China only nets the studios ~$0.20, whereas a dollar in north america nets them ~$0.50.

Ill stick to my guns that this summer will have to be saved by Dawn of the apes and Gaurdians but overall this summer has been lackluster and underwhelming. I think and its just my opinion but there have been alot of factors for these movies not performing better and not just one sole reason. you could say people and large families cant afford to go anymore because of gas prices, theater prices, food prices etc.

To be honest with movies coming out faster on bluray do people really want to fight large crowds and cell phones going off and people ruining films when they can just wait 3 months and watch it in there home?

I know everyone likes to use box office to determine if people liked a movie at large but this summer it's kind of hard with almost everything "down"

Eh, who knows.

Well reviewed movies and poorly reviewed movies are all under performing it seems.
