Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

Why are some the trolls around here calling this film a failure?

WW total has surpassed the film's budget, or does the studio only care for domestic numbers? It's still making a profit and we still got the DVD sales to fall back on... so how is this franchise a failure?

If all comes down to the worst.. FOX should just cut the budget back on FF3 to about 110 or 115 million. If WB can make a sequel to Superman Returns then FF3 should be CAKE! :cmad::csad:

I WANT A FF3!

The WB still hasn't greenlit a sequel to SR and Fox isn't the WB so you can't use what they would do. Clearly Fox doesn't care about it's comicbook movies.

It's not that they just look at Domestic, but Domestic is certainly extremely important to them, and since it looks like its only going to hit the budget (which is probably more than 130m) then yeah, they definitely are disappointed...

And I don't think someone calling this movie a failure constitutes them being a troll. Yes we have people that have come to simply down the movie, and have not followed it in any form or fashion, some not even seeing it for themselves.....so troll is a possibility.....but some that are calling it a failure have followed this franchise from the beginning, and are very disappointed in what they have seen in these 2 movies.....we may or may not agree with their assessment........but I also don't believe they deserve the title of troll........that word can go both ways......it has nothing to do with the opinion, it has everything to do with people's reasons for obessively praising or slamming a movie in order to get a rise out of people....start fights, etc.........lets make sure the title is given where it is deserved......

Calling it a failure doesn't make you a troll. Though I still say the fate of the franchise will be determined once the dvd sales are in.

The BO for this is certainly disappointing to say the least (and I liked the movie).

When you take into consideration the amount of money the first movie cost and how much it made vs. the amount of money the second movie cost and how much it made, then Fox almost certainly has to be disappointed.

Quite simply, a sequel just isn't going to happen as fast as FF fans would like. Not with how this franchise is currently performing.

I wouldn't exactly call the downers "trolls" but do wonder why some of them never show up in the thread that Malus has for FF memorabilia and such and contribute something positive. Instead, they tend to dwell on the dark side of things... perhaps they might have been frightened by a solar eclipse as a small child :woot:

If one considers a WW gross of $230 million plus and counting is a failure, then a lot of studios are in BIG TROUBLE. I agree it is disappointing because I maintain that FF2 was a better film than the first and I expected $300 million WW figures.

Please note the word "some" which was used for those who do happen to troll around here and those who don't. I have seen them going around in most threads constantly stuffing it relentlessly while adding there own preferred franchise being way much superior. My use of the word troll doesn't justify for everyone who calls this movie a failure as long as they are in respect to the fans and happen to justify a good reason behind it.

Isn't it supposed to be:

Budget vs profit

not movie 1 vs movie 2..

In other words I'm sure Fox will end up making more then what they spent so far since day one.. Not a box office junkie here but I'm sure they will end up profiting more then the 230 million + advertising that they spent to make both movies.. right or wrong?

It IS budget vs. profit, but if you look at the rising costs and diminishing gains between the two films, anyone with common sense will see that if they keep on the same course, FF3 will have even worse results than FF2.

First movie: smaller budget, more B.O. = good profit
second movie: bigger budget, less B.O. = not good profit
third movie: likely an even bigger budget, likely even smaller B.O. = lose money???

Changes need to be/will be made before another FF film comes out.

I agree and unfortunately even though he seems like a nice enough person, I think Tim Story has to go if there is going to be a third film. He does well in getting that the FF is a family but I just don't think he is very good at kicking things up to the next level and giving the film an epic feel. But it remains to be seen if Fox will find a director who wants to put up with them. :woot:

Yeah, the franchise needs a new direction. Story needs to go. I would like a more experienced director to take charge.

Number 1 the final #'s are not in yet. Number 2 there are DVD sales, and rentals, cable TV, regular TV, toy sales. Don't say not good profit until ALL the #'s are in.

Well, one thing the DVD sales won't get that it got last time, and that was the Christmas boost....I don't the DVD sales will be anywhere near what they were after the first movie....and thats just another negative that this movie is having to contend with.......not sure why Fox is making these decisions, but oh well......I'll purchase the DVD in what looks to be October, and enjoy it.

Therin lies the heart of the dilema. No top notch director would work for Fox. Not with the money they would offer, and the control they would wield. Why Singer left, and went to a studio that would give him cart blanch. Give him a ton of money, and leave him the hell alone. Fox will never do that, therefore Story will be back. I would agree, and support that decision.

IMO, at this point, the writer simply needs to make sure that their writing supports the family aspect of this comic. I don't think it has anything to do with the directing....I think it was Payne that brought out, IMO a GREAT family vibe, along with the actors performances, and had nothing to do with the directing. I think the director has to have a greater command of an epic vision, as well as MUCH BETTER grasp of action sequences.....as much as I like Story, he just may not be that director. I think the cast gets it, I thing Payne got it, but I'm not sure that Story has it........if there is a 3rd, I would like to see a new director, after ALOT of thought....:yay:

The problem is that giving Singer a ton of money and leaving him the hell alone didn't exactly work either. (Exhibit 1 - Superman Returns' underperformance, Exhibit 2 - no news of a Superman sequel, Exhibit 3 - criticism of the Superman movie still going on, on these very boards.).

Fox needs to be less meddling, but I don't think a non-presence is always a good thing, given that Superman Returns became a self-indulgent misjudgement!

Story gets it, but he appears to be limited and somewhat loss when it comes to action. Why they hired Spielberg to produce Transformers. He's the master at directing action sequences, of course for the same reasons posted below, you won't get Spielberg, or any other top notch director.

Oh you'll get no argument from me there. SR was a $ 209 million underachiever, and I blame Singer directly. The Superman costume stunk. The cape looked like the inner lining of a shower curtain. Fox is never going to go for broke on any movie, like they went hog wild with SR. If Fox threw 209 million at this movie, and got this kind of return, the'd have Storys head on a spitt, but $ 130 ? It's not a big deal. It will make a profit in the end, and there will be a 3. Face that fact. Like I said, some here have the mentality of the federal goverment. Throw money at something, and it will get better. :whatever:

You're right; I should have said "not as good." DVD sales may actually be slightly better as I'm sure the majority of FF1 DVD owners will buy FF2 and
the general audience that did see FF2 liked it slightly more than FF1 (which could = more sales). As always, time will tell.

Just made my return to SHH after a 3 week hiatus due to my trip to Asia and I see F42 made it's budget back. Is it considered a success now peeps? F43 a lock now?
