Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

In my opinion Fox is the studio of The Devil but they really redeemed themselves with The Simpsons and I'm glad it's doing well, and will likely do better than FF2...

What matters is FF 2 should have done better. The hangover from the 1st movie was worse than I thought it would be. I'd like to exile Frost to the negative zone. I hold him responsible. How the hell they even let him close to the sequel I'll never understand. I saw his name right next to Payne's, I wanted to vomit.

Damn Carp, you are so busy making excuses for why FF 2 did poorly at the Box Office, and so busy trying to make it look good up against other movies, that you've forgotten what you enjoyed about it.....do you realize that about 95% of your time spent on this forum is doing the first 2, and I have yet to read what you enjoyed about it, 4% saying why you don't care what others think, and you'll die for the FF Franchise, and 1% talking about what you enjoyed about this movie....that's amazing....

Die Hard 4 is at $ 284 mil worldwide. It has yet to be released in 17 markets, including Australia, Italy and Spain. It's also only just started playing in some other major markets where it still has a lot of juice left, such as South Korea, where it scored the fourth biggest opening of all time last weekend.

And it's the highest grossing Die Hard movie domestically.

The only reason the F42 didn't do as well as it should have was the time it was released. It was released within 4 weeks of SM3, S3, POTC3, TF, and HP. Heck that's to .any good movies in one summer. And for anyone who says that has nothing to do with it, you watch next summer when TDK and TIH suffer the exact samething cuase of to much comp in a limited amount of time. :o

That's not the reason. It doesn't explain why they all made a s**tload of money, but not FF2.

If this was released last summer when just about every movie suxed except X3(I know, I know!) it wouldve made around $180 million. Heck if that boring arse Superman Sux made a profit last summer that just shows the lack of comp last year.
correction: SR didn't make a profit. :o

Other overseas cume updates: Universal's "Hot Fuzz," $55 million; WBI's "Ocean's Thirteen," $159.3 million; Universal's "Evan Almighty," $6 million; Fox's "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" (which has eight major markets still to play), $110 million; and Universal's "Mr. Bean's Holiday" (which bows domestically on Aug. 24), $186 million.

that would make it the 3rd best potter film domesticlly, correct??

Probably; the last one finished with $290 million. Without looking, I think worldwide Potter is the highest grossing franchise ever (not factoring inflation). J.K Rowling is a real life, amazing rags-to-riches story.

How the heck does Mr. Bean make that much money worldwide? Dude is so unfunny! :o

It's not why. Look at movies grossing as well as, or better, than FF2 since it's release and compare the competition.

Ratatouille
Die Hard 4
Transformers
Potter
Simpsons
Chuck & Larry

Next week we'll get Bourne Ultimatum, and I guarantee that movie won't suffer because of too much competition. And if you still want another example, the week after that we'll see Rush hour 3 which will probably suck but will still take in some serious cash at the B.O. So, basically, you can't blame other movies for FF2's performance being as poor as it is. At most, competition took away a couple of million, not 25% of it's potential B.O. revenue.

How many Potter movies are there?

Other movies aren't to blame for the box office. Except for one other (the first Fantastic Four). They were all released far enough in advance that they weren't any trouble for FF2.

You just made my argument for me. :o There were 2 many good movies released in such a short frame. Rush Hour 3 and Bourne barely have any comp becuase they are being released in August. I don't understand why other companies didn't see this as a good time to release theirs as well.

It was way more crowded for TF and Potter not to mention DH4 stuck in the middle of all of them as well as Ratatouille,FF2 had a nice open date.

No I didn't. I just named off 6 movies all released within a month of each other that are performing great at the B.O. To me, 6 movies grossing $125+ and 3 that are or will gross over $200 million all within a month is more crowded than Shrek/Spidey/Pirates.

But F4 made over $128 million. So those movies are not "killing" F4, but had the summer not been as crowded, the movie would have made ALOT more!

No, it wouldn't have made ALOT more. It might have made a few million, but that it's. Even if you're somewhat right -which you're not-, then it goes to reason that every summer is "crowded" and every movie would make more if summers aren't as crowded. So your argument is still invalid. In other words, Spiderman would've made more if it wasn't for Shrek and Pirates, Ratatouille would've made more if it wasn't for FF2 and DH4, Transformers would've made more if it wasn't for Potter and Simpsons and so on and so forth.

Essentially, it's not other movies' faults FF2 didn't perform well.

I agree, those other movies would have made more! It's just that this summer was to competitive. Just like next summer will be. Last summer was the lamest movie summer so......it just suxed! Anyway, I'm right. :o

Looks like we have updated WW #'s :

Yes I am an amazing person. :woot: This is a box office discussion thread. If you want to read my commentary on the movie go to the review thread. It's not an excuse. This movie unperformed, because of the 1st movie. Mark Frost is to blame for the 1st one, and his ass should not have come near the sequel plain and simple. I don't make excusses, I spin.

Nice...here's hoping for 900 million for HP, which was an awesome movie!

It may not hit $ 900. I don't know if it will beat Pirates thou if it does. It has China, Greese, and Turkey to open in yet. I now think Pirates will be # 1 WW for 2007. I thought it would be SM3, Pirates, HP top 3 WW.

Well, SM3 has done very well even though it didn't go beyond 900. I would love for HP to go beyond 900, it really deserves it, it was one of the best movies of the summer.
