Rise of the Silver Surfer BOX OFFICE Discussion

You're free to anything with your money that's within the law. You're not free to use it for an illegal activity.

Yes i am i'm afraid, as i said, i'll do what i want with it. I've paid my due's to Fox and the movie industry, i own over 200 GENUINE DVD's which were all bought and paid for with MY, and FF2 will be the first and ONLY movie this year i will see on pirate. That is one illegal thing i'm doing, i dont do drugs or any other ****. But even if i did, it would still be upto me because its my money i'm spending, ok.

Still sounds hypocritical no matter how you try to rationalize it. If you really don't like Fox, than don't support their product. But you must like it to some extent or you wouldn't be interested in the pirated copy.

BTW, I don't understand the complete bashing of anything Fox ... I just wish they put some of their TV people into movies. The FX network dramas like Rescue Me, Nip/Tuck, the Riches and The Shield have surpassed the premium cable channels like HBO IMO.

You can think it sounds hypocritical all you want, if Fox wont make the effort to make a good movie, i wont make the effort to make them a profit. End of argument as neither of us are gonna change our viewpoints.

Live Free or Die Hard has an estimated Wed take of $ 8.87 mil.

With the way the daily numbers are going, a sub-10 mil weekend looks highly likely.

I think we all liked the movie for the most part, but we are FF fans, I think honestly that a lot of us overlooked a few things because we are for the most part positive and we were hopeful for the movie. I like this movie, but I know that I am easily pleased. I can see that the potential for this franchise has been short changed by an inattentive attention to detail and a lack of respect for the source.

When you hear comments from Mark Frost about "well it was a studio driven enterprise and once you knew that going in you went with it" it make me a little bitter, because he is a writer. You have to maintain the balance on the creative side cause the suits are number crunchers for the most part.

Their jobs (suits) are tied to Fox and so they are going to be obsessed with the bottom line of fox.

Creators however have a little more independence as they move from company to company. Mark Frost apparently never held up his hand and said Doom must be Doom, heck it sounds like he suggested a lot of the changes. He made wholesale changes to classical characters because he thought that this would work better in the context of today.

And so DOOM, the template for Darth Vader became an Osbourne clone.

When I read that I could not believe it. Now we know why Dr. Doom was portrayed as he was.

So now you have a situation where Tim Story in trying to pitch the FF more on the epic side fought with Avi and won in getting the Studio to bring the Surfer, brought in Don Payne a more faithful fan of the source to try to correct what Frost and the Studio did.

So in this film you can see the influence of Tim in what this film is. Even so Fox brought some numbers to him and said the exit polls are skewing young, lets take it lighter, lets get a running time of about shrek and no Galactus battle cause the Surfer is expensive as it is, so cut that story out and lets just count the money.

I had no problem with the PG rating, I think that actually that was a plus, but the running time can't allow people to invest in these characters. Maybe the kids but for the young teens and adults you will feel cheated cause by the time you get comfortable with the characters Fox shows you the door, time to go.

I am embarrassed at myself, I jumped on some people for being too negative at times about what Fox's intentions were for this movie, but now Fox's intentions are clear.

And now to think that Tim is going to take the heat for the film not being as eventful as it could have been burns me, cause you can see that he has been working hard trying to be true to the source and to appease us hardcore fanboys.

Tim is not to blame for this stuff. It is obvious that he and Don Payne have had to be political, trying to move the studio from point A to B without offending everyone and losing their own opportunities.

Fox's model is not conducive to great and epic films. Their model is suited for simple light fare.

In that respect it is a tragedy that they have the FF franchise.

Ok that is it, no more negativity after today. I'm all out.

Here is to Jack and Stan, creators of the worlds greatest superhero team.

Extremely well said.

I was talking about Live Free or Die Hard. :cwink:

Wednesday estimates are in.

Live Free or Die Hard debuts with $8.870 million, while FF2 takes a 14% drop for a $103.960 million total.

That's pretty impressive...didn't expect that high a number on Wednesday.

Rat is opening at 3,5000 +
Live Free = 3,172
1408 = 2,733 Up 55 theaters

WEDNESDAY ESTIMATES: 'Die Hard' w/$8.8M Wednesday, Headed for a 5-day of $34M-$37M

by Steve Mason

THURSDAY MORNING UPDATE (as of 9:00 a.m., Pacific)
Last night, I called Live Free or Die Hard's opening day for $8M. As of this morning, I'm revising the Wednesday number to $8.8M. $34M-$37M still looks like the correct range for the 5-day and the traditional 3-day weekend should stay in the $20M-$23M range.

http://news.fantasymoguls.com/originalcontent/2007/06/preliminary-die.html

Wednesdays estimate is up. FF $ 103,959,000 domestic. $ 163,097,851 thru 6-27. $ 1.9 million. Looks like $ 130 domestic is getting slimer, and slimer.

That's too bad....I saw it last night, it was much better than the first movie.

I wouldn't put much stock in this. Steve Mason is generally bad at making projections.

Mojo has a slightly higher estimate $ 8,870,000.
I was more talking about his projections for the 5-day gross. He's generally bad at extrapolating from an opening day and making a weekend projection.

It's an art, not a science. Projected weekend for FF 2 is over/under 9.6 million. Time for me to head to the moviespoiler.com, and see what these new releases are all about. Spoiler for Live Free is allready posted.

Though i havent seen this movie, i can pretty much tell from reading this forum that the complaints are same old ones about Fox movies, in which case, i totally agree you X-Maniac, they are not giving us movies that we will be watching in 20 years (IMO anyway), when the potential and possibly the talent was there to do so.

I think you should view the movie for yourself to make up your own mind. It is very entertaining (and less offensive to fans than X3 was). But it does move very fast - events/emotions aren't given time to sink in. Indeed, I found it hard to remember a lot of the movie as it goes by at such a pace and on such a surface level. (I also think you should refrain from mentioning that you are supporting movie pirating... it doesn't do your cause any good if you look like you do that.).

On the other hand, some comicbook movies have gone to the opposite extreme of too much padding, pretentiousness and attempted complexity and they haven't had a good widespread reception either.

Critics would have liked FF2 much more if had been a little more serious (less of the hammy humour) and brought out the full drama and impact of its huge events.

But you have to remember - not every movie is going to be directed in the same style as Bryan Singer might do it. Different directors bring their own visions to the table.

With this movie, you do feel as though the essence of the FF and the Surfer are there. Galactus is more debatable, as is Doom. And the action and cinematography are fantastic. I don't think you will get the full experience on some pirate copy - see it at the cinema on the big screen and then make your mind up.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Live Free doesn't sound too bad. It should do well.

Oh i will be viewing the movie myself, and for the record, i dont support movie pirating, only when Fox is involved.

I will be giving my own opinions and non other when i see the movie and review it, be sure of that. And because i like a couple of Singers movies, does not mean he is the only director out who can do a CB movie, and IMO Chris Nolan is a superior film-maker, so please, dont mention BS unless we are in the X or Superman forums.

Against Ratoutille, Transformers and soon, Harry Potter? Yeah, don't hold your breath for people to notice a 12-year-old franchise sequel by next week.

I am as big an FF fan as anyone. I don't understand/respect those that have changed their opinion based on the BO numbers. If you liked the film, you should be independent and respect yourself enough to stand on your own. Frankly, if you like the film you stand with a good majority of the general public who did also.

However, this is a BO thread and it is very fair game to point out that the film is not meeting expectations. Hopefully, the well thought out discussion on why the number are down will lead to a better third film. All indications are that the second was better because of such discussions.

Well said...the movie is underperforming doemstically, but when somebody has an agenda to bash the movie, because they dislike the director or the cast, it's kinda hard to keep an open mind to what they are saying.
