Transformers Box Office Thread

''After getting 103m RMB in the first week, Transformers continued its strong run in China in the second week, racking in over 80m ($10m+) with less than 20% drop from its previous week. By Tuesday afternoon, it is reported to have crossed 200m RMB ($26.3m) milestone, it became the second foreign movie that reached that number except Titanic. Now TF is on it way to crash Hero's 250m RMB total and see a possibility to catch the all-time biggest Chinese movie record holder-the Curse of Golden Flowers, which yielded over 290m ($40m) fianl score.''

China + Japan = Land of Transformers

You're an outcast over there if you don't like giant robots and monsters.

My original prediction was that Transformers would finish in the top 3 this year for domestic box office gross. Then, just before it's release, I specified my prediction saying it would beat Pirates and be exactly #3 when it was all said and done. From the way it's shaping up, I look to be dead on.

Transformers has an uphill battle if it's going to beat Shrek out. It opened bigger but Shrek had a little bit better legs than what Transformers is showing. Unless it drops less than 40% this weekend, I just don't think it'll happen. Still, #3 with over $300 million this year... nothing at all to be ashamed about!

Don't forget South Korea where it's the highest grossing non-Korean film after 4 weeks.

Worldwide TF will end up being one of the highest grossing non-sequels of all time if does well in Japan. And if China's box office is any indication it will be huge there.

I have no doubt about that, but I was speaking about domestic numbers only.

I think it might be shaping up as a photo finish between TF and Shrek 3. I think by next week we will see who will start pulling away.

If TF drops over 45% this weekend it probably won't have a chance at defeating Shrek 3. Especially if it drops hard (55%) the following Monday.

It's hard to do a day by day analysis because of TF release date, that's why I've only been doing weekly comparisons.

I mean Shrek's weekends look higher, it's 4th weekend is like $15 million and I think TF is going to do at best $10-$12 million? However, it's Mon-Thurs total will probably be higher than Shreks.

Without a doubt. I think it needs a max drop of 40% to have a legitimate chance at topping shrek.

talking about legs, its even starting to match spiderman 2's earning this week:

The weekend comparisons for all the July 4th films of the past few years is interesting and some conclusions can be drawn from it.

1. Transformer's had the second best weekend opening, losing only to Spidey2.
2. Transformer's had the lowest drop in it's second weekend.
3. All the films, except for Men in Black 2, showed better legs from week 3 to week 4.

If #3 holds up for Transformers then a 40% drop can be expected (even if that's a lofty expectation), which would help keep it up with Shrek's pace.

Transformers was also behind Spidey 3.

well there's 15 dollars.

Now Transformers only needs 55 million more for the lead. :o
