The Marvels Box Office Thread

So what is causing this to fail so hard at the box office? I really don't get it. I was surprised Cap Marvel did a billion especially compared to Wonder Woman. But to go from a billion dollar movie to this is crazy. Even taking out the IW/EG bump.

-You can't say it's anti women sentiments because that didn't stop Barbie or Cap Marvel 1 (time might tell but doesn't seem to be affecting Hunger Games either). And honestly with a box office like this it seems that women didn't even show up for this

-MCU fatigue? That didn't seem to affect Guardians 3 that came out not long after Quantumania which at the time was seen as an MCU low point

-People claim it's the writer's strike but that didn't especially hurt Five Nights at Freddy's opening weekend. Basically the cast doing a press junket or not, if there was interest people would've shown up

-Poor promotion? Even without the press junket they advertised this pretty well in terms of billboard, trailers in front of big movies, etc. At least from what I saw.

I'm really curious what caused this and can't think of an answer
It was one of the worst marketing campaigns that I ever saw.
The campaign for CM was so focused.
This one was all over the place.

Sheesh. Lower than Dark Phoenix, which was dead on arrival (for the record, there are parts of that film that I defend)? That's no bueno.

More than anything, I feel bad for Iman Vellani. She did a good job and is a fan just like a lot of us.

What I find more distasteful than anything are the YouTube hate-mongers targeting this film who had their knives out ready to hate and trash this movie.

They've been predicting Marvel Studios was about to flop for years. Look no further than what happened to Shang-Chi.

I put this at the feet of Kevin Feige. He didn't know how to manage all of this. Also, Victoria Alonso with how she and other execs mistreated the visual FX artists.

The hate for this film which is being generated online is so bad even Author, Stephen King is criticizing what a lot of these Youtubers are dong And King isn't even a fan of the genre.

Jesus Christ. It's not reaching 100M domestic.
Yeah that sucks.

Ant-Man hit $200 million, Guardians hit $300 million, and not more than a year ago, Black Panther hit $400 million. This is just embarassing.

Its as if Marvel Studios released a movie as bad as Elektra and Catwoman for this to go this low.

Ant-Man was a fake out the 2nd fake out after MoM so still fell under a fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

GOTG was the end of a trilogy so that helped, they have fans that don't generally follow the whole MCU just them.

BP people wanted to see what they do after Boseman.

This sadly has nothing that really draws a casual fans in. I don't believe Brie is considered a BO draw, the CM character isn't their Wonder Woman as she does not match that popularity not even more popular than Wanda or Widow. Not a terrible movie but it could be a straight to Disney+ and I wouldn't have questioned it.

I saw what Stephen King tweeted, and he's 100% right. These folks came out ready to trash these films.

Many of these YouTubers have made tons of money for years blasting and roasting Brie Larson and making awful thumbnails out of her.

Frankly, it wouldn't shock me if Brie Larson never wants to work on films like this again, and I couldn't blame her. I mean she shouldn't be exposed to this, and she shouldn't have to worry about it but we're still human beings at the end of the day. People can be really sensitive about this. If it was me, I don't think I'd have been mentally strong enough to endure all this abuse, even if I shouldn't care about what a bunch of whiners on the internet say.

Also, the situation is repeating itself now with Rachel Zegler and Snow White. Not that I'm a huge fan of Snow White or Zegler's work, but IMHO, the response to Zegler has been outrageous in comparison to her comments which I honestly found rather innocuous.

These hate mongers who claim to hate woke-scolding, SJWs and cancel cultures are guilty of the very things they rail against. They are trying to punish and shame people for expressing differing views.

Captain Marvel came out around peak MCU while the Marvels came out at the opposite side of the spectrum. The Netflixation of the MCU sure didn’t help either.

I don't know where y'all are visiting but the "hate" for this is really tame. People are playing it up.
Cap Marvel in 2019 had a lot. This is nothing.

It really feels like people playing are playing it up to try and shield The Marvels from criticism. It's sad but regular internet behavior to celebrate a movie's failure. Not just the "woke" (which is a dumb term) stuff. People have heart attacks over the Sony Spider-Man movies or some other nonsense like that. Remember everyone celebrating the failure of Black Adam. Because the Rock was being "cocky" pre release. Hell people still "joke" about Morbius (yes yes I know Jared Leto) years later. I said this in another thread I don't get why people do it other than them being unhappy, but it happens with so many movies now. It's the norm

To be clear: I'm not saying sexism doesn't exist or that there isn't sexism at all in the disucssion about The Marvels. But anyone who has spent any amount of time on Twitter, Reddit, or The Hype know that people regurarly gloat when a movie fails regardless of its politics. And that The Marvels isn't getting much hate especially compared to those movies or even its predecessor

Disney right now at the very real possibility this movie doesn’t even crack 100 million domestic:

It's not going to get easier with Hunger Games and Trolls this weekend taking screens, and then Disney's Wish coming the week after. Heck, the second week drop could be pretty high.

Disney could rerelease this when the brand is stronger for it hit the $100 million mark. But terrible, isn't it.

I remember the day when a Fantastic 4 and a X-Men film didn't hit the 100 million mark. But I guess every franchise will really have their day when they just ultimately flop at the boX office, especially after releasing so many films.

Thanksgiving and saltburn is released here in the UK on friday. There some great indie movies out atm, dream scenario was quite full in my showing, The Marvels could be done and dusted after this weekend .

This is neither here, nor there, but I didn't know that was coming out so soon, so I hope that extends to more territories and theaters soon!

Off Topic, Yeah the release dates for this in the US are weird tbh. I don't even think theres a thread for it on here but hey ho.
On Topic, Its grim reading the numbers but I honestly feel this movie will be the catalyst for Marvel to make some fundamental changes leading forward. It can't continue to handle properties like this with lack of conviction and short to long term loss. Chris Stuckmann released a great video yesterday about the future of film and the execs behind these studios making the whole industry toxic, films being completed and just deleted out of thin air is troubling.

Just retaliate a point i made a week ago, i go cinema nearly everyweek since joining cineworld unlimited back in may. Im usually there munching a bag of popcorn waiting for the trailers. There was NO trace not even a sniff of The Marvels Trailer or that it was dropping in November from then to now. Whatever promotions they had for this film was a absolute disgrace in my book(regardless of the strikes). There lack of faith in this project has been clear.

I don't watch the MCU movies in theaters anymore. I've grown increasingly disinterested in the MCU since Moon Knight.

Probably a combination of a lot of things, I think Disney/Marvel grossly overestimated the popularity of the character & film based on the BO results of the first.

Where the first film was released played so much more of a part in how well it did financially than people wanted to admit. It was sandwiched in between Infinity War & Endgame with IW's post-credit scene setting the first up perfectly for financial success, at the absolute peak of the MCU's popularity. Then the fact that the character really didn't really feature heavily in EG as you would expect & the overall general decline of the MCU's recent offering that has created some negativity around the MCU that it's never experienced before & the DCEU knows only too well. It does matter & can/will hurt all your film's within.

Still to go from $1.1b to probably less than what The Flash did would be a failure of epic proportions.

Has the MCU become a franchise for the olds?

Another weird stat;

65% male leaning, with 45% men over 25, 22% women over 25 (giving it the best grades at 82%), men under 25 at 20%, and women under 25 at 14%.

Whatever the marketing, it didn’t appeal to women at all based on this breakdown.

65% is a pretty standard drop for Marvel movies. But if you combine it with the abysmal opening that's another story.
