Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel the Vampire - Part 2

Yeah, I watched the first episode of Dollhouse. It was okay. Nothing special. I've watched so many damn tv shows these past two months I told myself I wanted to take a break, then this got the best of me. So I take it I should keep watching? I do, because of Whedon but it seems to get better?

Dollhouse and Buffy both pick up around their 6th episode.

Dollhouse goes on to high highs, and Buffy to very high highs.

While the first two episodes are a little mediocre, Buffy did have some other good episodes before reaching the sixth, i liked that dark mood they had in some of them, like the episode dealing with the witch mother.

Anyone noticed that in the past 5 years TV has gotten progressively better? Less than 10 years ago, the Emmies had to fill in spots with C.S.I, now there are so many great shows that some don't end up getting nominations.

As for Buffy, while many like to talk about Joss Whedon's strong points being planning, some of the problems in the show came when they didn't plan enough.

Definitely. Like I said, episode 6 is their first really good episode, then it gets truly awesome toward the end of S1. And S2 is even better. Do I love it as much as Buffy/Angel? Hell no. But its absolutely worth the (relatively short) time commitment, imo.

I found a thread on another website about this, and I thought I'd bring it up here just for fun. Also, I had tried to sign up to the website in order to add my two cents to the question at hand, but for some reason my membership has yet to be approved (maybe the site's defunct and the members don't even realize it).

Anyway, the opening post asked what would happen if Jason Voorhees were to show up in Sunnydale and start running amok, or (the more plausible scenario IMHO) if Buffy and the Scooby Gang were to go camping by Crystal Lake. Either way it's The Slayer vs The Hockey Masked Slasher. Who would win?

One person made the observation that it would depend largely upon which season of Buffy we were talking about, for she seems to get more powerful as the series went on. An interesting, though I feel unfair, assessment. I don't think Buffy actually became more powerful as the seasons went on. I think we were simply shown more examples of just how powerful she really is. Just because she never bent the bars of a prison cell before Season 6 doesn't mean she spontaneously developed that level of superhuman strength in that episode, only that she never needed to bend prison bars with her bare hands.

Jason, on the other hand, seems to get more and more powerful with each passing sequel. In Part 2, he really didn't do anything superhuman. In Part 3, he split a man in half from groin to neck with a machete in a single stroke, and later squeezed another man's head until it collapsed and his eye popped out. Not to mention surviving the machete through the chest at the end of Part 2 and being hung by the neck in Part 3. In Part 4 he stabbed a guy in the crotch with a spear gun, lifted him into the air single handed, before firing the spear up into the guy's body. Plus him smashing through the door of the Jarvis house and surviving having a TV smashed over his head. In Part 6 he punched a guy's heart out, ripped another guy's arm off, performed a triple decapitation with a machete, pushed a girl's head through the wall of a motor home, twisted another girl's head clean off, crushed a deputy sheriff's skull with his bare hands, and broke the sheriff in two. Part 7 he did the old sleeping bag trick. In Part 8 he punched a boxer's head clean off, shoved his hand right through a rapist mugger, and seemed to have developed the ability to teleport ahead of his fleeing victims, no matter where they run or how fast.

I've actually written a piece of fan fiction on this subject. In my story, the showdown takes place in between Season 4 & 5 of Buffy (so no Dawn, and she's still dating Riley), and in the undisclosed time between Friday The 13th Parts 7 & 8 (which, believe it or not, actually lines up almost perfectly). In my story, it's only Buffy and Riley who go to Crystal Lake, for a romantic getaway. They meet up with Riley's cousins and some of their college friends (machete fodder), party, drink, have sex, and eventually it comes down to Buffy & Riley vs Jason.

In my opinion (and my story) Buffy wins.

What do the rest of you think about this scenario?

Honestly, I feel like the whole show was pretty much disposable until episode 6. Joss even warned people ahead of time about how his original pilot was "too dense" according to network execs, so he had to retool it and delay some elements for 6 episodes to make it more accessible and "case-of-the-week"-like for new viewers to jump on. After that it gets better, and the last few episodes of S1 are really phenomenal. S2 was downright fantastic. Definitely worth it, imo.

I actually enjoyed the first few episodes. I think they were important in showing what the Dollhouse was about and the services they supplied. Also, many of those "engagements" will get called back as the series progresses. And there are interesting character bits and little clues on what's going on.

My trouble in the beginning was the whole ethics of the idea and how ok most seemed with it and some even thinking they are a benefit. But, it all comes around as the series progress.

I need to check out Dollhouse on Netflix sometime. I only watched the first few episodes and it just didn't grab me enough to keep on with it. I think it was the timing that killed it for me. Same nights as the final season of BSG. I just didn't have time for that ****. :o

Guys, definitely check it out, particularly if you like Joss Whedon! Although I did say I enjoyed the early episodes, it really jumps into high gear around the "Briar Rose" episode! And I was surprised a number of times during the run of the show! And at the end, I actually got emotional. Not sure if it was because it was over and there were no more episodes to watch, or if it was the resolution for Echo, or what. It certainly made an impact.

Yep, but her character in the Buffyverse is her best role to date, imo, so the wait should be worth it. And yes, the "Whedon-style" banter was also commonly known as the "Buffy-style" banter, so you won't have to worry about a shortage on that front. :D

Great to know! I enjoyed the Echo character (and it doesn't hurt that she's my "type"). Should be interesting seeing her interact with Buffy (who I enjoyed recently in The Crazy Ones.)

I think Dollhouse was a decent show, but "Briar Rose" is good example of why some just couldn't get into it. I mean, I'm generally pretty good at suspending disbelief, but even I find it a bit too contrived that a school (or parents) hired a shady underground organisation to help a kid with her psychological issues. Haven't they ever heard of a psychiatrist?

Still, DH is worth watching just for Enver Gjokaj. Perfect casting.

Guys everyone post one of their fave scenes from either Buffy/Angel. Here's one of mine due to Joss' abilty to never let anyone have a happy ending and him alluding to it from the first season of Buffy.

:hehe:

It's impossible for me to pick a single favourite moment, so I'll just state some very good ones.

Buffy Season 5: When Dawn is revealed to be not real as she phases in and out of existence.
Angel Season 2: When Angel closes the door behind him on Darla and Drusilla, allowing them to feast on Holland Manners' party.

It's interesting how Angel's morality slowly started to get more ambiguous, in Season 5 expecialy he did some harsher things for the "greater good", [BLACKOUT]like poisoning that demon, who's basicaly been asking for his help since the beginning they met, in order to kill one of the members of the Black Thorn, or when he ordered Lorne to kill Lindsay[/BLACKOUT].

By the way, the After the Fall comic wasn't so bad, can get a bit clunky by the end, but it had some good moments, felt more like Joss Whedon's action epic to conclude the Wolfram & Hart storyline than a Season 6. The rest of IDW's run was very mediocre, some elements good here and there, a cool twist for the true villain and a kind of generic execution, it wasn't realy too different from some of the Seasons in the show to be honest, IDW's entire run of Angel (counting After the Fall) actuly felt more like a Season in the Angel series than Season 8 did with Buffy.

Joss Whedon doesn't seem all that interest in the Angel franchise, which is a shame, i like how much it built outside the Buffy world, it was even better than it's sister show in some ways.

I think Willow had the most "normal" of relationships, at least with Tara.

Cool cartoon, but it looked like it had spoilers for me.

Anyway, an update. I am currently in Season 2 of Buffy. It was a little rough in the first season, but that's often the case with shows. Just finished "The Dark Age" with the demon from Giles' past. The show is really starting to get in its rhythm!

^It gets only better from there.

And nice cartoon. I really wish they would make an animated show for BTVS already. We've waited long enough!

Well....yeah if your just starting major spoilers lol

Just wait S2 picks up in such a great way.

I loved the Buffy TAS footage so much when they released it.

Been re-watching Angel, there are so many comic book references to Batman, Wonder Woman, and The Avengers.

Angel is the dark avengers who likes to brood and rides the Angel mobile and always wears black.

Fred just got referred to as Wonder Woman at the start of season 5.

Speaking of the comics, I'm in the middle of re-reading Angel & Faith. God, I love Giles' aunties. They're a riot!

there are a lot of slayers now for him to choose from and expand on which is what i would want. Or a fray series. Btvs is very much like avatar/lok where it can go on with new characters forever.

but wouldn't you rather watch more avengers movies !!!! Oh my god robert downey jr is like the greatest actor ever !!!

My mom is watching reruns of Buffy for the first time. She's enjoying it, but she misses some episodes because of work or w/e and it turns out she's missing literally every important episode. It's kinda funny at this point. She started watching around "Lie To Me", and since then has missed the S2 and S3 finale, the majority of episode where Jenny Calender dies, the episode where Spike gets his chip, and most devastatingly of all, "Hush". But don't worry, she caught all of "Beer Bad" and "Ted".

LOL, if that were my mom I'd have to interject and put in the DVD's instead. I'm very specific about my episode choices with first-time watchers.

does she not have netflix? if not, get her a 1 month free trial STAT
