Fantasy Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel the Vampire - Part 3

Buffy isn't just getting revived on tv, Buffy and Angel are getting rebooted/Relaunched at Dynamite comics! Boom has lost the license so the reboot is done with.

Kelly Thompson (Absolute WW) is writing both.

I didn’t read past the first arc, but I was intrigued by the almost post-crisis take on the continuity. I assume it ended up going off the rails?

Vamping Xander, having Buffy/Kendra/Faith all active at the same time, it was very mutliverse heavy leading them to reboot again where they had Willow "stealing" Buffys powers and thus leaving Buffy with nothing to do

Okay, Hugo and Jean are clear Xander and Willow updates. Jean's even a redhead (also, naming a red head Jean, come on...). Oh dear god, church going mean girl.

I am surprised that they'd cast a 15yr old as the lead. And a 22yr old, 20 yr old and an 18 yr old as the slayers besties.

Thats such a HUGE age gap

Also the name is supposedly BTVS:New Sunnydale

Well, that will probably keep romance options out.

Hmm... I hope it's a temporary title. First of all they should not go back to Sunnydale IMO. Second of all - Is this really the best they could come up with? What's wrong with just "Slayer", for example or the original name minus "Buffy". Anyway i hope it's just a working title.

The brand has been dead for quite some time. And unlike various other genre fair, there isn't an easy moniker to use to denote its connection.

I also suspect the Slayer novel did not sell well enough for them to be confident in not using the big name.

Buffy & The Vampire Slayer.

Seems like a safe and algorithm friendly title. The other one sounds clunky but I don't expect any different.

Vieweranon from twitter has read a version of the script

  • I read a draft of the pilot script for Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale and... it's okay, solid even. Gets off to a clunky start and has too much How Do You Do Fellow Kids energy (teens unironically say "unalived") but the new kids are fun and I was invested by the end.

  • Re Buffy: As of the pilot (or at least this draft which is months old) she isn’t involved yet. She lives somewhere else and only has one line.

  • People seem to know about slayers, there’s this Vampire Fest where people are cosplaying, but everyone also seems to think Buffy is just a legend?

  • Re opening scene: It's fine but doesn't really measure up to the openings in Welcome to the Hellmouth or City Of.

  • The new slayer's name is Nova, though she's a nerdy introvert, i.e. much more like Willow than Buffy. The only returning character in the draft I read is Buffy but she's barely in it, will clearly take a few episodes for her to meet the new leads.

I mean, if you are trying to focus the new show on the new characters, you do kind of need to limit Buffy in the first episode. But, a lot has probably changed. But I still wouldn't expect a ton of Buffy in the first episode.

So far none of the rumours about the plot or the characters are really exciting me. Maybe the execution will elevate it but right now I’m kinda nervous.

The cast appears to be solid. The writers room is solid. Sure, no award winners there, but experience in the kind of shows that should be the DNA of a new Buffy show.

The involvement of Chloé Zhao, Nora and Lilla Zukerman, and SMG’s enthusiasm for the script/plot are the main reasons I’m optimistic for this. The cast is shaping up well too. I’m hopeful they’ve come up with something good, just the alleged leaks haven’t been super exciting.

The Nova casting has had me excited. I loved Skeleton Crew, and loved all the kids of that show. So I am excited to see what she brings to this show.

When you ship the protagonist with their rival over their intended love interest.
