The Dark Knight Can someone tell describe the "pencil trick" scene for me?

The Pencil Trick: In the scene where the Gotham Mob leaders are discussing what to do about Batman, and the new guy (Joker) who just robbed a bank with tons of Mob money in it, they are all sitting around a table arguing about it.

There is a TV at the end of the table, wiith a Chinese businessman video-conferencing with the group. He has removed the rest of their money from the banks to "Safeguard" it.

Joker shows up, dressed in purple. One of the mobsters is about to send one of his henchmen over to kill Joker and take care of the problem, when Joker pretty much does a "Hear me out" bit. (Summarized of course).

He then takes a pencil, and slams it point first into the top of the table so that it stands up on end. He says "I want to show you a trick. I am going to make this pencil disappear."

The mobster who was going to send the henchman says something along the lines of "I have had enough of this." and sends the henchman around the table.

The Joker grabs the guy, and slams his head into the table, right on top of the pencil. The guy slumps to the ground off screen.

The part from "I have had enough" to the pencil trick is less than 3 seconds, and it sets the entire mood for the role of the Joker for the rest of the movie.

Enjoy.

Pretty much how it happens, Gamble is the mob dude that sends his henchman over to the joker, after the joker slams his head onto the pencil, the joker says "tada, it's magic" and does the wavy hand thing from the commercials.

the pencil trick was pure genious... wonderfully done and really set the tone for the joker

For those wondering if its really graphic its not. You just see the guy walk toward Joker to grab him and then you just see the head quickly hit the table and he falls over. But you dont really see the pencil go through his eye.

This scene was amazing. I totally wasn't expecting him to slam the guy's head on the pencil so quickly.

The pencil trick was ridiculously overrated IMO. I thought it was gonna be something completely awesome and instead I was like "meh"

:whatever: So overrated the ENTIRE theater at my showing last night gasped in amazement.

Its only amazing if you dont know its coming, thats what makes it so good, you would never guess he was going to do that.

Its a perfect mood setter still

i don't get how the pencil stuck in his head?? didn't he get stabbed by the eraser-end?

It was a pen, not pencil. And this scene was overhyped. I read it here like for the past week and when I watched it yesterday it was like only 3 seconds and people didnt even gave a decent reaction. But it was cool tho. Tadaa haha

Seriously, no one. They gasped and laughed at other things (notably when Batman climbs the wall and reverse turns with the batpod and some other Joker scenes) but not at the pencil trick.

thats probably due to that they were 1.) shocked to silence or 2.) though the pencil fell off when the dude's head hit the table.

so far on my 2 viewings i have the audiences either laughed or were shocked by it.

I feel sorry for whatever town you saw it in if people didn't react. The theater i saw it in went balistic, you couldn't hear what was going on in the film for the next 20 seconds because everyone was laughing or gasping.

I had a different reaction from others who thought it was overhyped. I read about it (i wish i didn't) before hand and thought it didn't really sound like a great idea for an entrance. But when i saw it in theater i fell to the floor because of heath's performance, that and the fact that it was all one take.

Mine liked it too. Lots of ''Ewwwwws" were heard throughout.

my theater went crazy went that scene happened. i see it might be over rated if u r expecting the scene and know about it already.

Saw the midnight showing. The pencil trick:

Joker walks into a mob boss meeting after he's pulled a bank heist. The heist was at a mob controlled bank, so the bosses are pretty upset with him. As Joker is talking, one of the mob bosses asks why he shouldn't simply kill him. Joker asks no one in particular whether they would like to see a magic trick. In a rather deranged fashion, he pulls a pencil out of his jacket and sticks it into the table.. He tells the bosses that he will make the pencil disappear as he makes nervous abra-cadabra motions over it, kind of mumbling the whole time and staring at the pencil. Meanwhile, the mob boss who threatened him sends one of his henchmen over to Joker, presumably to kill him. In an instant, Joker straightens up, grabs the henchman by his arm, puts a hand over the back of his head and rams his face down onto the pencil, impaling him. The pencil "disappears" into the henchman's face and he collapses behind the table.

It happens incredibly fast so you don't actually see the pencil penetrate the henchman's face. The effect is undeniable though.

Overall, the movie is every bit as good as the hype suggests. Easily the best superhero movie ever (although you really can't compare it to any of the others - more like a Michael Mann crime drama than a superhero flick). I wouldn't recommend taking children. I knew it was going to be dark, but not THIS dark. :brucebat:

Joker walks in the room and Gamble asks him why he shouldn't just have his friend (big bodyguard guy: BBG from now on) pull his head off. Joker says "Well... how about a magic trick? I'll make this pencil... (at this point Joker slams the sharp end of the pencil into the table, leaving it standing straight up) disappear." During the end of the sentence Gamble waves BBG over to Joker. Joker grabs BBG's arm and tangles him up in about a half a second and slams BBG's head down onto the table (eye right over the DULL END of the pencil) about as hard as a man's head can be slammed into a table. BBG slumps, Joker waggles his hands.

Scene.

I watched ever scrap of film with Joker in it and read every spoiler imaginable before I saw this and was still not ready for the Joker I saw on the screen. He's amazing. And amazing is a VAST understatement. I just don't have a better word. Genius maybe.

It was a pencil. A yellow one with an off-pinkish rubber at the end

Exactly. It happened so fast and was really unexpected which made it hilarious and awesome.

If this scene, or any other, didn't live up to the hype or get a reation from you then I think that maybe for the next one you don't go around ready everything that there is on a spoiler board.

It's a magic trick...not a pencil trick. :oldrazz:
