The Dark Knight Capes and Cowls - New Batsuit Discussion Thread

Cause there's no way you could put protections that big, that thick, under a cloth costume and have a nice-looking Batman.
Not neccessarily. Would the TDK suit look good under cloth? No, it would look crap, it would be all lumpy. It wasn't designed to go under a suit.

Would the Begins suit look better? Maybe - it's more organic, but then again it also wasn't designed to go under anything, the buckling issues that occur in the Begins suit would look even worse under cloth.

But a suit of similar size and thickness that was actually designed to look good under cloth would be perfectly possible - it just needs a good clean shape, and needs to have separate elements where needed so that it doesn't buckle anywhere.

Such a suit would be hardly any different to the padding on the Spidey suits or other cloth-based suits - it would just be a different shape (slightly less natural) and it would exist in-movie.

Any cloth-based suit needs padding anyway because they tend to make the actor look thinner - you just need to re-purpose that padding as in-movie protection.

Excellent points. I would love to see something like that. Perhaps update the fabric instead of solid grey, protective ribbing strips or something along with the muscle suit/ armor underneath. The Spidey muscle suit for 2 & 3 had the muscle structure seperated so there would be no bulking or folding so it is quite feasable.

The nose on that Empire cover looks like bad photoshop to me.

I usually wouldn't blame crappy pics on bad lighting, but that's really what is going on here. The cowl has lost all of it's hard lines in that shot.

People need to stop defending Bale's size. There's no excuse for it. Batman is one of the few super heroes whose strength is pretty much dependent on how he looks. It's not feasible for a lean human to do the things Batman does. And Batman needs to look physically intimidated, if only to psych criminals out of attacking him.

That's the thing about a lot of the heroes, I think the actors don't quite fit the bill physically, they might facially though. And don't tell me good actors with good heights.

And the suit also sucks. Batman IS a comic book hero, no matter how much of a realist Nolan wants to be. The audience CAN suspend themselves in belief as to him getting the same amount of protection from the bulky suit as a thinner, more organic suit like the one in the comics. They even dropped the ball with the symbol. That's one of the most important parts of the suit. I want to see it clearly and know it's Batman, and not some chump in a black suit.

There's a really hard, jet-black shadow of the edge of the mouth hole, which makes it look like the bottom of the nose is above the edge of the hole rather than level with it, and at the edge of the nostril area there are some sculpted planes that are reflecting a very brigh highlight on either side, which makes the bottom of the nose look very separate from the rest of the face.

It is as you say bad lighting, pure and simple.

I personally laugh everytime Michael Keaton stops the Joker's bullet with that silver plate in Vicky Vale's apartment. Realistically there would be a big hole in that plate. And in him, too.

I'm pretty sure that the Joker used a Dillinger in that scene, a very weak weapon. I could see that actually working.

except for the fact tthat there is a whole unspent bullet in the tray when vicky examines it later:wow:

Bale's physical appearence is not an issue. Its not essential to the character in my opinion either. Yeah I dont want a skrony guy playing batman either but a lean body build is perfect for batman in my opinion. I dont know about you but how many bulky guys are able to be agile and stealthy while being athletic enough to move from one rooftop to the next. Having a lean body build is ideal for those attributes and as far as taking on thugs without a huge muscle mass, I will take a physically fit man with skills and fighting technique over any "huge" thug with no real sense of what it means to fight other than throwing haymakers. For those UFC fans out there just watch George St. Peirre fight and case closed. He is lean, very agile and has great technique as a fighter...he will knock you out.

I was always more bothered by how quickly she lost interest in where he went. He obviously had to go out a window or something, there's only one door in an apartment, possibly a patio door. You'd think she would want to A; make sure he isn't injured at all, and B; ask him how the hell he managed to pull that stunt off and disappear into thin air. Instead she's like oh well, Bruce is gone now... OH LOOK, it's a pretty box!

I mean, seriously, this thread is ridiculous.

It goes like this:

Poster A: "I think the Batsuit should look like this!"

Poster B: "OMGSTFUn00b u aren't teh l33t! OMG! Not comic faithful!"

Poster C: "But teh REAlISm!!!!!!11

Then, you multiply A * B * C, and so you end up with D.

If D is more provocative, then Regwic comes in and says:

Regwic: "I mock you! Your claim deserves serious refetation, and you are incorrect! Sorry!"

And someone like Saint will come in and post some manip that looks like pajams, and say:

"Batman needs to look like this becase:

  • I'm right
  • I'm Right
  • I'm Right
  • You're wrong

"

And then someone like Mr. Superhero will come along, and it's the same scenario all over again!

Seriously, this thread makes me laugh uproariously! I laugh at all the people who spend countless hours debating something that is so trivial, to minute, so meaningless to the rest of the general population in society that it really doesn't matter whose mini-essay is constructed with more persuasion because, at the end of the day, people get on with their lives.

WUH-ho0o0o0o0o!!!!!!!

Who are you guys trying to kid?

You guys go back and forth, and forth and back, and verbally *********e until until the proverbial cows come home.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnddddddddd, with that said, keeep arguing, L:)L.

No need to read further. All possibilities have been covered in this post. Many thanks: Now I can stop reading these threads and move on to something productive. Free at last!

No ... just ... no.

Sorry.

Criminals are a cowardly, superstitious lot. I need an identity that will strike fear into their hearts.

[Suddenly, the ghost of Jimmy Durante flies into the room, startling Wayne]

That's it! A schnoz! I will become a schnoz!

It could work, I guess. I just want some spandex, foo's. Can't a brotha' get some spandex?

No. But you can have flexible textured material.

Do you have the lineart? I can't really see the details with it coloured in.

I do, actually. Remind me to post it.

Chrome? Chrome?

No, chrome was on my BATMAN TRIUMPHANT designs. The sad thing is, while the ice suits from BATMAN & ROBIN are more colorful, they are actually apparently less "busy" overall.

I especially enjoy the "His legs are segmented for movement" argument. If it was for movement, the legs would be segmented at joints, areas of stress or buckling, and that's it. Adding a bunch of random lines won't make it any more mobile than that: it's just useless visual garbage, as I've said in the past. The same goes for the v-plate. No purpose, just ugly.

Exactly.

Even though we cant judge yet, i am really concerned that the TDK suit will give Batman a more stealthy, ninja type appearence.

More stealth ninja. And less "Batman". Hurrah.

As far as Bale's size goes, he's not super buff, but he's in good shape. I don't think Batman needs to be huge. Just intimidating looking. Bale is a somewhat gaunt looking person generally, and I don't think buffing up a lot is going to change the fact that he has a very thin neck and an angular face. He's just going to have to make that work for the character.

And so now we can see why he has that horrible overdesigned chestplate. Simply in order to match the overdesigned back plate. The "panels" on his suit are just awkward looking. They're cut very squarely, and they just look like someone glued panels to an undersuit. And the suit's poses in that render aren't any more mobile than some of the things he did in poses for BEGINS publicity or the movie itself.

But uh...it'll look better when it's LIT PROPERLY.

Riiight.

Because why would professional photographers light properly?

I love how that "early suit" production picture basically looks exactly like what we're seeing in finished photos of it.

Correction to this, I meant Derringer.

True, but the bullet is the size of a BB pellet, and that wouldn't look at cool as actually seeing a bullet with the casing in there.

QFT.

To me, it always seemed like she had the pieces together as to who he was after examining the tray. I need to re-watch it.

If there really is supposed to be a functional purpose for the segments in the suit, it's not movement because as you say it should really be in the joints. The only thing I could think of is just more ventilation, more areas to allow the suit to breath through.

that cover is terrible. I can't believe someone released that. Someone should be fired.

Look
batman_begins_big_051018100848275_wideweb__300x371,1.jpg

It's the same nose on both cowls, it's just the angle. The nose bugs me a lot in that pic from Begins, but as many times as I've seen the movie I never really noticed it until I started to see that pic on this board.

I like the mouth opening much much better in this picture. I wonder why they changed it? Probably b/c Bale doesn't have as full of a face this go round.
