Infinity War Captain America|Steve Rogers - Chris Evans

Without his genuine, haunted idealism, the MCU is weightless.

That's a great description and why the idea of handing down the mantle as if the mantle and not Steve Rogers is what's vital and important to the MCU leaves me cold.

Steve's my favorite character in the MCU, but I don't really understand the heated arguments for/against the idea of passing the mantle. I don't have a problem if the title dies/retires with Steve, but I don't have a problem if for some compelling reason, Bucky took it up as a way to honor his friend. Any good writer could make it work, and it actually opens up story and character possibilities for Bucky.

I also think the stuff about how Bucky can't handle a franchise/outlive Steve because he killed Tony's parents is way, way, way overblown. First of all, he was not in control of his own actions and by A4 he'll have 3 movies as a protagonist.

Loki is a beloved MCU sex symbol and comic relief, and he's a MASS MURDERER. Bucky is in a way better situation, character-wise.

But Loki has charisma and personality.

Well, for one thing I think that Stan/Bucky wouldn't be alone if the character continued on without Cap. I think the only way it would work is as a Bucky/Falcon buddy movie. Or a three-lead team with Widow. That could rock. I for could definitely see the makings of at least one good movie in there.

Also, I think Stan is actually a very good actor and has been allowed to show more of his original personality as the MCU has progressed. I think he's got the charisma for a larger role if they give him room to run. Loki, after all, had the benefit of shining for the first 3 movies he shared with Thor because Thor was so boring by comparison.

But as I said, I don't have any real preference. If they decide to retire Captain America with Steve, I've got no problem with that.

For me, it's like when Stark said "I am Iron Man. The suit and I are one" in Iron Man 2. Captain America is a symbol Steve made for himself. He was tyo be nothing more than a propaganda symbol, but he became one of the most important heroes ever. To me, he and the stars and stripes are one. What Steve offers the MCU I don't think can be replaced simply by slapping the colors on another character. If he were to die, I see that void as being need to be passed to characters that have their own identity, not who will always live in the shadow of the guy who came before them.

I'd rather see Bucky carve out his own destiny. If they make him Captain America, I just don't see him being as popular as Steve is, and I see the mantle losing value. Steve Rogers is not just a hero, he is one of the most important ones. Thor takes orders from HIM. Do you see Bucky doing that? I see Bucky being a supporting Avenger, at best.

These are just some issues I have with the concept. I actually think Bucky's past makes him more ideal (not less). But, I just don't feel he ticks enough boxes for me. But, he ticks more than I feel Sam does.

I DEFINITELY don't think Sam should or will take up the the mantle. I think it's even a little offensive that Sam would trade in his own identity for Steve's. If passing the mantle could work at all, it would only work with Bucky.

Also, I don't think it's necessary for Bucky to be as popular as Steve for it to work. I only imagine it as a team movie where Bucky shares the load with Sam and maybe Natasha. But it could provide a lot of good character development and humor to see Bucky try to emulate Steve.

Marvel started this success by using limitations to their advantage. The very fact that Steve's memory looms so large can easily be explored and exploited for a good story. It doesn't have to be a handicap.

It seems weird that I'm arguing so much for Bucky-- I think he's just as likely to die in IW or A4 and I don't have a problem with that. It's more that I think people are being a little close-minded to story possibilities when they dismiss Bucky's fitness to be Cap or continue in the MCU.

A) Steve's arc isn't done. As a Cap fan I would feel cheated if they ended it now. For one, the entire point of the Nomad storyline and the entire theme of the character - a huge recurring theme that has been brought up again and again in the comics: Englehart, Stern, Gruenwald and Waid have ALL addressed it and they are arguably the greatest Cap writers of all-time after Jack Kirby - is that Steve does not wear a suit with the American flag on it because he supports America as it is or the government, he wears it because he supports the ideals of America, supports what America should be, the dream. The entire point of the Nomad storyline and then The Captain/US Agent storyline and then later Civil War was Steve coming to this epiphany, which he hasn't done yet in the MCU for all that they've made him Nomad.

Secondly they introduced the Accords in the MCU. In the comics, after the Secret Invasion/Dark Reign/Siege storyline Steve is the one to defeat Norman Osborn. He is given the title Commander Rogers by the president, and becomes America's Top Cop (the position Osborn held before Steve), and the first thing Steve does in this new position, the very first, is get pardons for all who was on his side during Civil War and overturned the SHRA. Which is a second thread, in addition to Nomad, that needs to be tied up in the films. And in my opinion these threads are Steve's to tie up.

B) Legacy characters have a long history of not working. I've given numerous examples. There's also the fact that Steve is in the top three for selling merch while no one is buying any Winter Soldier product. I go to SDCC every year. And Funko does this thing for SDCC where they release special edition Funko Pops specifically for the con. Last year, for 2017, they had a Bucky!Cap Funko... it was the only special edition Funko that didn't sell out.

Moreover, Steve is one of the few characters Disney uses to appeal to their most lucrative demographic... children. Before Black Panther came out and for the longest time, Disneyland here in Southern Cali only had three Marvel costumed characters walking around the park on a consistent basis: Cap, Thor and Spider-Man. Now they've added Panther as well (I have an annual pass as a S. Cali resident). The reason? Because these characters are the most family appropriate. Loki was never intended to appeal to the younger demographic. Cap is. There is no way they are going to put a character who was shown onscreen killing the Starks into a mantle that Disney uses to appeal to their youngest demographic (and the entire reason they bought Marvel to begin with, btw. They figured they had the little girls in the bag with their princess line, they wanted the little boy demographic too. Iger has said this himself).

C) And this one is just my personal opinion. I don't want Steve replaced. To me he is not replaceable. He's one of a kind. Unique. I resent Brubaker and the entire Bucky!Cap storyline. That and I find Bucky as Cap to be about as interesting as watching paint dry. In comics, while he was Cap he spent the entire time whining, being emo, and also being a general nuisance as Sam and Natasha had to consistently save his butt from scrapes. Now, again, this is just my personal opinion, but seriously, I don't want to watch that on screen. I have zero interest in that. Your mileage, of course, may vary.

I know what the actors' are capable of. I'm talking characterization. The Winter Soldier/White Wolf is a more serious person who's been molded by very serious and traumatic circumstances over many decades. He also probably can't share war stories with Falcon in this proposed buddy comedy.

They made Loki more cartoony in subsequent entries, but he's been a character who relished in this game of wits against others regardless of how inconsequential those games may seem. It's not just that Thor was boring for the longest time, it's that even Loki's charisma had purpose.

I absolutely think Bucky has a place in the MCU and should survive. Don't mistake me saying I don't want Bucky Cap as I want him to die. Far from it. I love what they have done with him and he is ripe for material. I just don't want to see that as Captain America. In general, I don't want legacy characters to run wild in the MCU. Like, I don't want Rhodey Iron Man, etc. Instead of just swapping existing IPs, I want to continue to see new characters brought in to fill these voids, like Black Panther, Spider-Man, or Captain Marvel will be doing. I want more of THAT. I see Bucky Cap also as the first step in starting a trend of going hog wild with legacy characters.

I totally agree. Legacy characters have always been a lazy way to leech off the popularity of established heroes instead of putting in the hard work to create new ones. It would be preferable to honor Captain America by letting the character "rest" until Steve Rogers is recast, or forever if they don't plan to use Steve again.

While I'm not interested in seeing Falcon become Captain America in the MCU, it would be great to see him spun off into his own adventures. There is no reason to keep him in sidekick hell when there is so much potential to be explored with him. I feel the same about War Machine. His military ties should provide many opportunities to use him in future films. Both heroes have been Avengers for decades in the comics, so including them in sequels and crossovers makes perfect sense.

Bucky doesn't interest me at all, but he does seem to be tied into Black Panther's mythos for now (sadly).

Yeah, I'm not a fan of legacy characters as a whole phenomenon-- it smacks of laziness. But I still disagree with people who keep thinking this is somehow an argument about Steve being 'replaceable'.

OF COURSE YOU CAN'T REPLACE STEVE. He's my favorite character, and if he dies or retires I'll be sad to see him go and the movies won't be the same without him. But his story is coming to some kind of end by A4, that's for sure. He's not going to be taking down Norman Osborn in Avengers 6. You might want that, but Evans is just a flesh-and-blood actor who has done an amazing job and he's ready to move on gracefully. Marvel has obviously planned out Cap's fate in collaboration with the actor, and however he concludes A4, it's going to be fairly permanent. Might as well use the occasion to send him out on a high note with real dramatic stakes.

I don't think it's likely Buck will become a new Captain America. But if he did, it wouldn't be about replacing or about recasting, because it's clear that it's another character adopting the title. It would be about a tribute to an irreplaceable man, and the changes and responsibilities and problems that might entail.

And I don't really care if the idea worked in the comics that well. Most mainstream superhero comics are garbage nowadays anyway. The MCU has taken lousy events from comics and converted them into quality movies before. (cough... Civil War... cough)

My hope is that the current loose ends with Steve's character are tied up, but he is left standing so the door is always open should Evans decide he wants to come back, whether it be something small or for a full fledged solo/Avengers appearance. Evans is still young (only 36!) so he could always come back sometime down the line if he so wanted. Hems similarly is young like that. RDJ I can see dying in large part as he gets the grandest stand off he can get, as well as he is in his 50s now.

I disagree about Evans actually being truly done after Avengers 4. I think his recent talkativeness on the subject is a contract renegotiating tactic. Downey did the same thing when his contract expired, prior to him signing for Civil War. In fact I think it went before that, if I recall, I think it was prior to Ultron. And neither of them would be the first to use this tactic. Franchise actors use the press to renegotiate contracts all the time. The earliest in my memory is Leonard Nimoy and the role of Spock. He wrote a book "I am Not Spock". Made them kill the character off in ST 2. And only agreed to come back and do more Star Trek films if they let him direct the third (and fourth) ST films.

But, most importantly, with how tight lipped Marvel has been on this project, to the point where they didn't let most of their cast members read the entire script. Sent the pages of scripts to their houses with security, for which the actors had to return the pages of scripts to said security when they were done reading them, I don't think Marvel would allow Evans to give away his characters death one month before the movie is set to come out. In fact I'm shocked at the number of people who honestly believe that Marvel would allow this. Particular when Evans was one of the few allowed to read the entire script.

I think Evans, under Marvel's influence, as well as renegotiating his contract, is participating in a huge misdirect. Because of the Fallen Son storyline in the comics a lot of people have been predicting Steve's death since prior to the movie Civil War being released. And Marvel is hiding behind this, because while everyone is focusing on Steve, they don't have to worry about fans putting too much effort into figuring out what they're really doing. Killing Steve is way, WAY too obvious.

Anyway, disagree if you will. I'm not changing my mind on this. Until I see Steve's death with my own eyes, I wont change my mind and anyone trying to do so is wasting their time.

...and I still don't want to see Bucky as Cap. I have no desire for this. I don't care whether Marvel has the capability of doing it tastefully or not, I don't want it to be sold to me, period. My mind is made up. And undoubtedly, considering how popular the character of Steve Rogers is, especially with the kiddos, I'm positive I'm not the only one.

They could do the arc where he gets aged by having the Super Soldier serum removed from him (maybe have the gauntlet do that somehow), that way we get a new/older Steve to mentor the next Cap, and when Evans wants to return BOOM, they come up with a way that he "gets the serum back" and he can take up the mantle once again.

Steven Rogers was born on July 4, 1918. Aging him in the MCU probably isn't in the cards unless they intend for him to die that way. :o

This legacy story is lazy writing. Develop the characters or create new characters, make them interesting, but do not give them the legacy of others. This is ********.
Captain America is Steve Rogers, no matter who takes the shield, it will always be Steve Rogers.

See, that's why I love the whole John Walker as Steve's replacement arc in the comics - he was brought in to be 'a bigger, stronger, meaner Cap' but despite his best efforts Walker always came up short trying to 'out-Steve' Steve and eventually realised that he couldn't just be a carbon-copy and evolved into a much more interesting character. As a 'failed Cap' he was a great tool in highlighting just how important Steve was, both to characters in Cap's world and to readers. Give me that over BuckyCap anyday.

Well i didnt think of it like that lmao Maybe they just aged him slightly, it would be cool to see old man Rogers restart what could be another Shield

They could do that with Sam. Have him take the mantle and try his best to be Cap, only to find out he cant be like Steve and has to be his own man. Although idk how they will view the mantle in the MCU, but in the comics the Mantle of Cap always meant something.

i want that Cap will die in avengers IW or avengers 4 and that's be permament because his death would be change the mcu dramatic

I agree with this. Steve is Captain America. Just like Bruce Banner is the Hulk, Tony Stark is Iron-Man, Bruce Wayne is Batman, Clark Kent is Supeman, and so forth. It's best to retire the character if Chris Evans is calling it quits until they can find a decent replacement for the character.

Pretty damn cool. Isn't that his AoU suit though, rather than the CW one?

That is the CW suit; the sleeves on his CW suit doesn't have any white breaking them up like his AOU suit. But the helmet appears to be from his Avengers 1 suit.

Gosh his tush looks amazing.

I don’t want him to leave because who is going to be the new nice jock boyfriend of the team?
